Taryl, in the 1950's my father had a reel type lawn mower that had a kick start. I believe it was a REO brand. I was only 10 years old and it was easy for me to start when i got to mow the lawn. I wish i had that lawn mower today.

Thank you for the memories, this kick starter reminds me of the old Briggs and Stratton washing machine engine and later the b&s side shaft engine with kick starter on it. We used them for our home made mini bike's, because of the convenience and it felt like we were in the big scooter world like that of the Cushman back in the late 50s and early 60s, before those damn Hondas came along 😮 Beep beep, look out, here we come 😊 And a happy father's day to you Tarl ❤

Montgomery Ward sold one also. It had a lock lever you slid about 2 inches to lock up the recoil assembly. Then you wind it up, fold down the crank lever, and slide the lock the other way and spin the recoil to start it. We used that mower for 17 years, until we started mowing the church yard. First mow I hit a hidden drain culvert in the ditch that was grown over and cracked the engine block. I about cried when we had to replace it. Best mower we ever had.

Hey Taryl. I have never seen a "Step N Start" before. That thing is definitely cool! I have seen quite a few contraptions for yard equipment but never a "Step N Start". I also like when they send a love note telling how simple the unit can be installed. Hahaha! Usually ends up needing a huge supply of tools 🔧 to complete the installation. A phone number on the love note is nice however the person on the other end has no idea how to help you! Hahaha! Love the "Mysteries and Oddities" Taryl!

After 4 shoulder surgeries if the geometry was right, I would use that. It definitely needs more throw. Perhaps instead of a 90 degree angle between pedal & puller, a 70-75 degree would be more optimal. Might be something to improve on in a future episode.

All sorts of ideas come to market but because of no advertising only reach a small sales base and die some need time to catch on and die before they do back before low flush toilets came out a device that cut the amount of water per flush came out at a time when most homes were flat rate no water meter but as a water hauler it could save our customers a lot of water and therefore money I bought 2 and tried them in our toilets on one I could get it to flush on 3/4 of a gallon of water and the other one on 1 1/4 gallons so I went back to see about buying more to sell to our customers but they were gone another product I thought of buying was a gas powered drill and jigsaw a gas powered circular saw no generator needed a year later black and decker brought out their mod 4 cordless drill with the promise of more cordless tools to come and the race was on in less than a year it was obsolete makita brought out a 9 volt more power and run time then more tools circular saws jigsaw Sawzall so why buy a 4 hundred dollar smoky stinky noisy gas drill when for less than half that you could buy a complete set of clean and quiet cordless tools each set soon becoming obsolete with in a year as units with more power came out and then new battery technology came lithium batteries and the one that went from good to bad Dewalt brought out a lithium battery that fit their old 18 volt tools so buy new batteries or a new tool and upgrade all your tools to lithium unlike other brands where to upgrade ment buying all new cordless tool's but they quickly discontinued that for a new set and the new lithium batteries didn't fit the old tools I bought a mod 4 drill and when 1 of it's batteries failed converted it to run off a sealed lead acid battery ment it was corded but the power pack was on my belt and using 6 volts on a 4.5 volt drill gave it more power and a lot more run time then came makita 6 volt system and then 9 volt more power ment more tools and finally I could work anywhere with no 120 volt power needed game changer for the building industry

The old British lawnmower manufacturer "ATCO" used to make a range of 'kickstart' mowers in the 1920s and 30s, but that system was fitted from factory. It actually worked rather well - no ropes, no recoil, nothing like that at all. Instead, it used a pedal and quadrant, which engaged with sprocket type of arrangement with a one way clutch. I had one as a vintage show piece for several years, until I sold on. The engine was a Villiers two stroke, but mine was a bit worn-out, and an absolute pillock of a thing to start.

Shorten the part where you step and you will be able to rotate the assembly more because it won't run into the ground as soon. Shortening it will mean having to step harder on it, though, because the lever arm is shorter. Also you could add a bumper at the bottom of the throw to cushion it so the end of the throw isn't so jarring. More complicated would be to add a gearing mechanism to regain the mechanical advantage lost from shortening the arm, but would need three gears instead of two so the part attached to the pull cord rotates in the same direction as the foot pedal.

It mounts on the bar nuts and has teeth like a hedge trimmer . It's still new in the package . I've never seen one before but the package looks old . But , but , but Taryl with that mower you don't have to bend over to pull the rope to start it ---- well you have to after you cut the rope off .

I think back in the day it was probably a good idea especially for people that didn't have enough arm strength to pull start a mower your legs are typically stronger than your arms so for women or younger kids or elderly people probably was easier to start it that way then pull starting it if it works better than it don't
@WJCTechyman
@WJCTechyman Жыл бұрын
I guess it's supposed to resemble kick starts on motorcycles and gasoline powered washing machines? I could be wrong. It's a good idea if implemented correctly as our leg muscles are typically more powerful than our arms but this looks somewhat flimsy, especially on a cheap mower deck. It is lever based so that's a benefit. I have always told people that starting a lawn mower isn't as hard as they are probably starting it as I say (and instructions are also saying this) pull the rope out slowly until you feel resistance, retract the rope all the way, then give it a fast strong pull and the engine is probably started at that point.

Growing up in the 60's my Dad had a pusher with a Briggs & Stratton hand crank. You flipped a lever on top of the engine, manually cranked it to wind up a ratcheting spring , and when you flipped the handle back over it would release the spring and crank the engine. Hopefully it would finally start after 5 or 6 cranks sessions. Those were the days.
Definitely AVOID This Brand At All Costs
