We're starting off with an early morning visit to the Kyoto Samurai and Ninja Museum. Being Japan’s largest experiential museum, I opt for the Samurai tameshigiri experience taught by master sensei Kuwabara (桑原先生) of the Tamiya School (彼は田宮流の先生です). Using a real samurai katana sword (and under close supervision!) I get to feel like a samurai, slashing rolled tatami mats with ease! After the sword lesson we're given a full history lesson into ancient Japan and how the feudal system operated, lastly followed by Ninja lessons!
In the afternoon we visit the historic World Heritage site, Nijo Castle, the place where control of Japan was officially handed back to the Emperor ending the rule of the warlords.

It really was a lot of fun, and actually very educational! There's a couple of sessions included in the ticket were I wasn't allowed to film; one where they step you through Japanese feudal history and explain it all in an easy to digest way with lots of props and interactivity - great for kids, and lastly a samurai sword demonstration where Kuwabara sensei performs to music. It's well worth searching out ☺

We all have an inner samurai ☺! Nijo castle is beautiful and all the paintings inside are national treasures. There's even a tiger room that was painted before anyone had actually seen a tiger in Japan. The castle site will disagree with your need for symmetry through, it's orientation is off by 3 degrees to the east when compared to the rest of surrounding Kyoto ☺

How long did the whole experience last? I want to go to the one in Tokyo but I don't understand time management. On the page it says 75 minutes for the katana but I don't know if those 75 minutes include the basic ticket that contains the museum and other activities.

Hi Oscar, welcome to the channel! The sword experience alone lasts the 75 minutes. They get you prepped and dressed, run you through the history, give you a full on demonstration, give you the basic training using a bokken (training sword) and then guide you through using the real one. It's sharp, and very real, and yeah they do make that swoosh sound 🙂. Additionally it includes what they call the "basic" ticket. You join in with the next group (after your sword cutting and you change back) and they take you on a museum tour, talk you through Samurai and Ninja history and give you Ninja stars to throw, blow-darts to blow, dress ups etc. That takes an hour on top. So the whole thing is 75 mins + 60 mins, if it runs the same as Kyoto does. It's heaps of fun 👍
