@@imageword5576 No - I want REAL purpose with meaning (not just making money to survive, having a life that I am involved in), or I want to be completely free from all responsibility. I don't like this thing where we're supposed to do work that has no meaning and fit our life in somewhere between. Makes sense. Don’t want an awkward middle ground. Being purposeless, in a chill situation (active nihilism), and desiring little is one end. Peaceful as fuck. Desiring growth and achievement fit to your own efforts is the other end. Personal and satisfying. Do you think you the average Joe can decide a relatively chill life or turn his efforts towards his own accomplishments meaningfully? He has to tax life considerably with work before making that decision now

In 2016 i basically decided to so what Nick wants to do in this clip. I became homeless and lived on the street for about a year. At first it was liberating, because in a real way my time was my own -- i could choose to do or not do whatever with my time. but as it went on i realized that my day would still fill up, it just got filled up with the basics which took a lot longer. Cooking, cleaning, trying to stay warm, getting anywhere all became lengthy activities. When i finally almost got hypothermia i decided to get a job and go back to paying rent. Was it worse than working a job? Yeah, in some ways, but in others it was way better. When the effort you're putting in is directly related to your ability to stay alive it has an inherent meaning that wage work lacks. It felt more meaningful even though it was more difficult. I imagine what's Nick is struggling with Is that a lot of what he's doing doesn't feel meaningful to him.

The problem is that none of this has to do with the modern state of the world, Nick is literally just describing the existential ennui that comes as part of the human condition. Literally everyone's job is absurd and demoralizing in the face of its own futility, and it always has been, yet we continue on as a species. Nobody gets to be the main character and have purpose 'happen' to them, you more or less have to find something yourself. For most people, starting a family is the clearest option, but that's clearly not the best choice for everyone. Finding fulfilment is just the next mental health task you're responsible for after you've found financial security. It's not Israel, or Russia, or China, or Biden, or Trump's fault, it's literally just the fact that you've run out of external pressures to guide any of your actions and now have to make some of your own.
