Lake Structure:
Structure: Is the naturally occurring lake composition or substrate. ( Points, humps, etc.) Above land on a Topo we would call it ridges, hills, valleys, etc.
Cover: Is an object within the lake such as trees, rocks, stumps, vegetation, etc.
Types of Structure:
Channel: is the original river passage and/or creek passages.
Creek Channels: originate from the backs of creeks and exit along the main river channel. These run naturally unless acted upon by a dam.
Channel Swing: is a bend in the channel (it often runs against the bank and forms a bluff wall. These can occur on the main channel or creek channels.
Drain: Can be confused with a creek channel but is related to rain water. Good examples in inflows at the backs of some pockets and wet weather springs.
Point: Is a ridge like protrusion from the shore that continues out into the lake (depth and distance are relative).
Main Lake Points: are points on the main lake or original river channel.
Secondary Points: are points found in major creek arms, coves, and back waters.
These definitions can muddy when describing some reservoirs with “lake-like” creek arms.
Ridges: are often the beginning structures that form an underwater “point” as they protrude into the lake. They also are often continue on to form saddles and humps/islands.
Hump: is basically an underwater island that has not yet broken the surface.
Saddle: is a dip in a ridge which often connects a (point to hump or hump to hump)
Ledge: is a “drop-off” or “break” in depth.
TN River: This usually involves the transition from “now flooded” terrain to the original creek or river channel.
Bluff Wall: is simply a ledge where terrain was not flooded.
Flat: is relatively large lake area with consistent depth and limited structure.
Bar or Sandbar: is typically a hard structure formed by laying of deposits due to current
Trough/ Ditch: Is a depression. They are often found between bars on the lake.
Inside/Outside Turn:
Inside Turn: is literally just a dip “in” of contours along any lake structure. They can be productive along banks, ledges, points, etc. These can be subtle or quite noticeable.
Outside Turn: is almost like a small point protruding off another type of structure such as a ridge, point, ledge, etc.
Pocket/ Slough: is typically referred to as a cut off of the main river or creek that does not have constant water flow. Though it could contain a drain.
