Long before I learned the Greek word, I knew that the English word broke down into re (to do something again, like in rewash, refry, relearn) and pent (to think, from the same root as pensive) so it meant to rethink. The kicker for me was when God repents in the old testament. Nobody's going to ever convince me that Jehovah had sin to repent of. lol

That's a good point. In the Dutch, the way, it was translated was "bekeer" which the "keer" part means to turn... I think a lot of that came from that Latin translation. We should have gone back to the Greek. Of course the part where God repents, that's a Hebrew Word (NACHAM). It means to be sorry for, though other meanings in other contexts. (Hebrew is a very poor language, which means that there are few words. And the words are defined more by their context, like our word "run.") That's part of the problem here. The word repent has so many meanings, depending on which word was used in the original. But the Greek METANOIA is the one used when it refers to salvation.

But no one suggests that God has sin to repent of. What an odd comment.

I really wish that bible scholars/translators would just transliterate metanoia/metanoeo into a new English word much like they did way back in 1611 when they transliterated the Greek word baptizo into baptize, a word that heretofore never existed prior to 1611. IMO, it would solve soooo many translation and misinterpretations of that simple Greek word.

You know that's exactly how I feel. Of course then we get other problems, like the word you mentioned baptizo. There are about a dozen meanings of that word, and many times people interpret it that it always deals with water baptism. Translating gets to be pretty complicated. I deal with it every day as I speak those languages.

We should promote Hebrew to everyone. It should be regular Sunday school study. (I cringe saying Sunday as I really think Saturday is the sabbath).

@@MrWuhisn the Bible (as I'm sure you know is both the Old (Hebrew and Aramaic) and the New (Greek). Jesus actually quoted from the Septuagint several times (Hebrew translated into Greek). The church, or Gentiles, were never given the Sabbath, only Israel had Saturday as their Sabbath. The reason we've adapted Sunday as the day to meet, is it was the day that the Lord rose from the dead. It was the day the disciples met to gather funds for those who were in need in the church. Christ is our Sabbath, so it seems from Biblical times that was definitely a time they met, but each day He has made for us.

@@TheKeesBoerMinistryChannel I’ve seen several of them because they would be difficult to improve! :) Perhaps try some videos that challenge the Calvinists interpretation of their pet bible passages such as Galatians 5:19-22? Many Christians are troubled by such texts.

Thank you, Brother!! I started attending a church. I went to the pastor after attending a couple services to ask him specifically what repent meant. I discussed the issue over the misuse of the word by wrongly defining it. He agreed with me. In the last several months he has started to say things like "repent of your sins" and "turn from your sins". It's disheartening because I thought I had found a solid church.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Maybe you can forward the video to him. Sometimes it helps to have someone else say the same thing. It's a difficult thing to change one's mind (repent) off, because it's so engrained in people's mind. Especially when they have never studied the original languages.

Many people repent from Jesus to repent of sin's
@TheKeesBoerMinistryChannel
@TheKeesBoerMinistryChannel Ай бұрын
I'm trying to understand your English here. Are you saying that folks leave Jesus in order to leave sin??? In the Greek, that would make sense grammatically. The Word repent was translated from five different Words. This video talks about one of those five. METANOIA, which means "change of mind." People can change their mind about anything... It's a very neutral word. It's not a religious word. That's why I think the word "repent" really is a mistranslation there. But I'm not sure if I answered your question or statement.

I brought up the issue of Strong's definition of metanoia, in another one of your videos. That their definition seems to denote reformation and not just a change of mind. It seems like that's considered a very respected dictionary, especially in the KJV only community. Some have said that Strong's has been changed, to fit the Lordship Salvation narrative. I don't know if that's really true or not. Where do you think they got their definition of metanoia from?
@TheKeesBoerMinistryChannel
@TheKeesBoerMinistryChannel Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure where they got their definition of METANOIA from. But the main thing that people have told me when I talked with them about the meaning being a change of mind is "yes, it's a change of mind about sin." That's why I made this video actually. The examples clearly show that it is just a change of mind. But many times there is circular reasoning.... But I don't know why the Strong's concordance assigned that definition. I will say this that when I studied Greek, the general issue of Strong's Concordance came up and their definition, and it was not seen as any authority. They looked more at Lexicons.
