See if you can improve your cooling to help with the extra weight when you're towing like a trans cooler, or a performance programmer system like from banks if this going to be your normal tow rig. For the near future

Have you re-geared? 121/122*C is where the motor is supposed to derate due to oil temp. I think most know the diesel is limited by its cooling capacity- and unfortunately aside from a bypass oil filter setup, I haven’t seen a way to add an external air cooler for motor oil on this platform…. But back to gears- If you are on factory gears 3.73’s with the larger tires and added weight…. Just a thought 🤷🏽♂️ Thanks for sharing your adventures! You are living my dream traveling and wheeling! Edit Just hit around the 17 min mark and your face when talking gears! Looks like you are thinking the same thing!!

Why aren’t you re-geared? I get it that it has tons of torque being an eco diesel, but don’t you think that’s still a lot of low end stress that the CPU trips up, I mean you’re hauling a trailer on standard 3.73 gears ⚙️, if you had 4.88 gears ⚙️ that eco diesel would be a beast with that trailer.

I don’t know if you’re monitoring Exhaust Gas Temperatures, but you should be. It is highly possible the Check Engine light and derating is due to dangerously high EGT’s. With a diesel, EGT’s can go sky high when under high load (eg going up a hill), in a high gear and maximum throttle. This is very dangerous and can damage the engine. When you’re towing, you really should use the manual function of the auto. Drop to a lower gear, keep the revs up and you should see the EGTs drop to a safe level.
@daniellavoie83792 жыл бұрын
I never leave on a trip without a $25 Bluetooth ODB2 Code reader. To be able to read the error code when the engine light comes on makes the experience less stressful.

I tow a 3k travel trailer and had similar issues. I jumped on all the chat groups etc. Making a long story short, with the different issues everyone was having, the fixes that have worked for me and many others are, an additional trans cooler with a fan, turning the traction control off while towing and Lucas oil stabilizer.... don't know why but with that combination I haven't had the issues for thousands of miles and many adventures.
@troutriver582 жыл бұрын
can you provide reference on the trans cooler?
@sherifx51222 жыл бұрын
@@troutriver58 i installed an additional aftermarket trans cooler behind the grill at the front of the stock cooler and radiator. In front of that I installed a pusher fan with a switch in the cab. I spliced into the rubber transmission and routed it to the additional cooler. My temp stays at 170 almost all the time while towing and off roading. I use the fan while towing and off roading and on hot days. Mesure the available space you have in your desired location, they have many different sizes available.

this has been a common issue with my eco diesel and could not figure out why for the longest time. finally started doing a lot of monitoring and testing to get to the root of the problem. the full skid plates under the jeep!! when on long trips and pulling grades, my exhaust temps would start to climb so high that it would go into limp mode. the full skids would trap in so much exhaust heat that it would eventually throw the motor into limp mode. pulled off the skids, hit the same grades and have not had the problem since.

I noticed after i did the emission recall, it is really sluggish shifting under load so I started manually shifting up Snoqualimie pass to keep it around 3K when cruising at 75mph, if I don't, foot goes to the floor and it won't pull more than 60mph. Manually shift and if pulls under 1/4 throttle at higher RPM and is happier.

We have a 4k pound trailer that we pull with a JT Mojave and JLUR Ecodiesel, both on 35's. The Mojave seems to do better with heat, I assume because of the bigger radiator and cooling fan. The Ecodiesel likes to get hot and uses a crazy amount of DEF under stress, so we usually tow with the JT and 9-11 mpg. Thanks for the video!

Hi Casey. I have a 2018 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with the Ecodiesel. I tow an Opus OP2 trailer topping out at 3500lbs. Long story short, I got the same check engine light while towing two weeks ago at elevation. My OBD reader (BlueOBD) said it was a turbo code. I cleared it and the truck has been fine since. I got home without issue. Took it to the dealer and they saw the code but couldn’t do much. Clearly something would have to fail involving that code for any action. This is just my experience towing and if the code comes back I’ll clear it and carry on. Just my experience. Thanks for the diesel updates.

Sorry to see you threw another code! I’ve been towing a 19’ GeoPro (3300lbs) with my JLURD on 37s with 3.73s for almost 2 years now. Initially had some issues with de-rating. A year ago, I added a Tazer and turn on the fans manually before towing on grades and leave then on for a while to cool things down once back on the flats. Haven’t had an issue with heat since! I definitely can’t put my foot to the floor and expect it to hold temperature, but it will hold the speed limit on most grades. Have about 15k miles towing between the Canadian Rockies and Utah. It’s not an HD pickup, but I think it does fairly well for being a small SUV with a half-ton diesel crammed into it :) I’m curious to see what your new CEL issue turns out to be. Thanks for doing these videos!

When I got my Gladiator regeared, they recommended to heat breakin the differential bearings when you are going to pull a trailer, by pulling a trailer ie 30 mph for 100 miles and then various speeds till you are up to 100kmph at 500 miles. That initial trip, may have heated up your bearings and thus your oil, then the cmputer would just derate your Wrangler to protect it.

The 3.0 ECO-Diesel is a great engine for Wranglers if used in it's intended capacity, highway and some mild off-road. And it is rated for towing 3,500 pounds. Just not with standard Rubi 4:88 gears and 37" tires. Engine has to work too hard, thus your overheating.

P00AF code has happened to me and I think that is what you are getting. I tow a trailer all the time, you get better with it. But urban areas can be a challenge to park. I get 8-8.5 km/l (19-20mpg) towing on highways w/mild offroading. I have not had the problems you have had with a diesel, but a recent trip towing in 32-38C (90-100F) outside temp and all temp/trans/oil temps were good. I had this issue. For me it was a code P00AF, if you have a code checker you can see it is a turbo issue and it seems common when towing. Obviously you're not keeping the diesel, but the Banks iDash is a great monitor that lets you check and clear codes for anyone who runs a diesel engine. If you want to know more about my experience with this error I am happy to help. So far Dealership cannot figure out what is causing this on my 9000mile JL diesel. My trailer is a lot lighter than yours, but from what I understand the error comes up more when towing and more weight more likely to happen.

This recently happened to me on my eco diesel ......but mine started out a few hours before limp mode with a transmission slipping or "kicking" issue. This "kick" first happened after being stopped in traffic (Vegas 112 degrees) then upon accelerating (not quickly) it felt like the transmission kicked or slipped. It happened more frequently when cresting grades or accelerating. Manual shift mode seemed to minimize this. CEL came on later in the evening with limp mode to 55 mph and then 45 mph. Restarted after a night in a hotel and a clear the codes Def system pcm flash at a dealer on the road. Jeep is hard to start and needs to rest or cool down for a long time before it will start at all. The code was a crank shaft position sensor and a immobilizer key code. I don't know what the CEL is now. I have the lightening bolt too with the electronic throttle control and electronic stability control message. Headed to local dealer tomorrow.

Just to throw in the comment definitely no ketchup on perogies must have sour cream! Great content Casey. As long as the engine light is not flashing you should be ok. I was told when it is steady flashing get it checked ASAP.

Manufacturers selling vehicles that have not been adequately tested in real world applications. With all the ultra strict EPA requirements it's harder and harder to produce a reliable engine platform. Tighter tolerances, hotter temperatures, etc. The public are the vehicle testers for new vehicles which is becoming ridiculous IMO. You shouldn't have to worry about any reliability or driving issues with any new vehicle.

Where do I sign up to test Jeeps for Jeep. I'd find all their issues lol
@vegasfordguy2 жыл бұрын
@@Casey250 I'm not sure. When I used to live in Las Vegas Ford would hire test drivers to put certain vehicles through hot summer testing in Nevada and Arizona. I believe several manufacturers test for cold weather and altitude testing in Colorado. It would definitely be interesting to see exactly what they encounter.

Did you by chance use the soft top to lessen the weight? Is the soft top as noisy as rumor suggests? I plan to get my jeep in about 6 months and I want the dual top but I really haven't seen a detailed review of the soft top pros/cons while doing regular or adventurous driving.
@Casey2502 жыл бұрын
I love the soft top. I bought this jeep to wheel but then turned to camping when the world locked down. It is very quiet for a soft top, even when you talk the 3 rear windows out and run in safari mode. I love safari mode in the summer

Great video. Any idea what your tongue weight is? Being that the cross member on the jeeps is the weak point, I've been wondering (especially will everything upfront of the axels with these trailers). Thanks!
@Casey2502 жыл бұрын
I do not know but I don't think its a lot. OGT would know as im set to their recommended hitch height.
@spartaforever36362 жыл бұрын
@@Casey250 Thanks but hitch height has nothing to do with it respectively (unless you want a bunch of tail whip from being too high). The dry weight they list is without the batteries, water, 'stuff' etc upfront of the axels. It's gets there real quick (350 lb limit). Believe me I know...ha. Great video and glad I found your channel (subscribed).
@Casey2502 жыл бұрын
I was mostly inferring they would know the hitch weight if setup at the right hitch height. A low hitch increasts the shift to the hitch etc etc.

I'm wondering why you don't monitor EGT when towing or driving in a loaded or most likely overloaded condition? You really should not be expecting a diesel to drive like a gas engine and should drive based on EGT because all other temps may be within normal parameters but the engine will reduce power to lower those EGTs. The majority of 3/4 and 1 ton diesel truck owners will monitor EGT and adjust speed to keep those temps within limits when loaded or towing significant loads.
@Casey2502 жыл бұрын
I watch the engine oil temp. I don't have a egt monitor. Once I knew this was happening I managed the heat and speed but the fact that it happens still is what I wanted to see, and share. Just because it makes it on a video isn't neccesary how I always drive. I have found issues on mine and want to document and share.

I can’t imagine towing something with my JKUR stock 3.6L. Wranglers built for real off-roading just aren’t for towing imo if they have the stock motor. I’ve re-geared and all that….good luck merging into highway traffic lol, and that’s with no trailer.
@xbpbat21x2 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more with you...and I have the 3.8 liter! It's why I looked for the lightest trailer I could find. It still sucks going up grades. And I get 9 miles to the gallon!
