This video is such a good reminder that we need to practice speaking to strangers more in order to get to a conversational level in any language!

Of course if you only speak in your native language then learning English is a must. But the more languages you learn the more you have to practice in order to master them and time is limited for everyone. Learning the basics of the language spoken where you are based is always a good choice, but besides that I'd say working on your communication skills in the languages you already know it's always better than learning a ton of languages. I myself have to radically improve my english communication skills and I'd say many people speak in english but only few people know how to communicate. That is also a matter of personality traits

Yea English is my native language and very few foreigners iv'e heard speak it well. That's why it kind of aggravates me when people always claim it's so easy to learn. But if someone is going to claim that English is so easy. They should be able to speak it really well. After all that's the end goal right to communicate. People want to learn a bunch of languages. It's better to focus on one and polish up your skills first.

@@larrybardwell8461 Yes, I completely agree. Mastering English is not easy at all, there is always something you can improve, from vocabulary to pronunciation. And even if you know a lot of researched vocabulary, if you don't know idioms or expressions that enrich your way of speaking, you run the risk of sounding pretentious and not very fluent

@@interiorpeople8131 Yea true, i feel lucky English is my native language. But I never thought much of it prior to trying to learn a second one. I say trying to because i'm still in the process. I wouldn't say i'm fluent yet even at a basic level. But when I realized how many others need to or want to learn English. That made me feel lucky. But you know American English is probably not among the hardest languages to learn. But i think the difficulty is in the pronunciation and spelling. Not so much in the grammar our grammar is simpler than most. If you read a lot to learn new words. It will be easy to mispronounce them if you guess. Without having heard them a lot already in speech. For example tough rough and then through all have the ough. But through is pronounced differently than the other two which are the same pronunciation.

@@larrybardwell8461 Yea, you're lucky. Being able to speak as a native the language that dominates internet content is a huge advantage both in terms of quantity and quality of information you can have access to. I think the luckiest people are from northern Europe because they are the best non-native english speakers and they also speak at least one more language, their native language. Dutch people I think have the best pronunciation, indistinguishable from brits. Scandinavian people have stronger accents but they speak really well. The coolest are people from multilingual countries like Belgium where they speak french, english and flemish. Or Switzerland where some people can develop german, french, italian, romansh skills besides english as children. And then there is me, from Italy, 25 years old who barely speaks intermediate english 🥴. Unfortunately in my country english is not taught well and among adults it's rare to find someone who know something more than "the pen is on the table". For younger generations is a different story, they have some skills
