Me personally I'm 20 years old. The answer is power. A lot of people, especially in this current era, are seeking validation through power. They either were emotionally neglected, or shut away from validation as kids... and so they seek "partners" to validate that who they are currently is desirable and okay. They become so frantic to prove that very point that they develop these strange mentalities of "Well if I've got you. You know i only want you, so fix me. Put in the work. I put in the work to get you, fix me." But once you start to point out the very flaws that made them feel they were invalid, you become part of that "other" once again.. and now you, too, are discardable. This is why so many emotionally abusive relationships exits. Because the victim keeps trying to prove they are not "everyone else" to be validated by their lover, but their lover can't accept any criticism because it reminds them of what they're running from. So they discard, then realize they'll be alone if you leave and they run right back. That all eventually turns into simply wanting power over people to control them... because if you can control people they can't disappoint you. They take someone being there, that they're mad at... than being alone and being mad at the person in the mirror. It's so sad, and really just disgusting.
