I remember at the time the director of this film saying that Newman's acting in the card scene was the best film acting he had ever seen...seeing it now for the first time after all these years it looks as if that praise was well deserved.

The Sting is one of the best movies ever made. First-rate script, solidly developed plot, sustained dramatic scenes, memorable characters acted flawlessly from entire ensemble. Newman, Redford, and Shaw were at the top of their game. The poker game on the train is one of the all-time classic scenes from any movie ever made. The way Newman dupes and out-foxes Shaw by adopting a gauche persona during card game is brilliantly executed. The question is how was Newman able to sneak in his 4 Jacks to beat Shaw's 4 Nines?

I saw this fantastic movie when it was released in 1974, my husband saw it in 1977 & I asked if he could figure out how Newman cheated because I didn't notice anything--even though it was obvious w/Robert Shaw. He keeps disrespecting Lonnegan by pronouncing his name wrong (calls him "Linament" LOLLL). He says it wrong a couple times when he first walks in and when Lonnegan corrects him, he responds by nodding and letting out a loud belch.....hahahaha I love the way he keeps peeking over his shoulder in the final hand, and then that GREAT look that he has on his face when he lays down the 4 Jacks. Nx Doyle - So true. One needs only look at the nominees and winners over the years of all of the Academy Awards to get an idea of how warped the Academy actually is in whatever criteria it uses to judge. You can tell by the winning selections from the nominee INCLUSIONS, not to mentions the EXCLUSIONS. 1967 Best Actor is a perfect example. Newman could have won for Cool Hand Luke that year, which was an absolute masterpiece. But if they chose any three of the other four nominees, it would have been hard to argue against them, but they chose the least deserving of the five. Newman is like Robert Duvall...a consummate professional, always excellent, could have won several Oscars in in his career by any objective measure.

This is the perfect scene of knowing your mark. The question remains how to know how high to raise it? Do you cheat and bring in 4 jacks? or how about 4 queens? They know Lonnegan's cheat and therefore know how to beat without looking as if they cheated as well. It's just brilliant. I love this movie. It's just one hell of a good time.

In the scene right before Newman goes to the game, one of his accomplices tips him off that when Lonnegan cheats, he cheats with 3's and 9's. So he knew to expect the 9's.
