Correct, 2 gas turbines total 9600hp on 2-1 gearbox to the middle Wartsila waterjet and the Paxman enginenes give the power to "smaller" waterjets. (worked as commissioning engineer on the propulsion was a interesting project)

As an merchant navy engineer I'm not soon surprised by the numbers of yachts, but 70 knots tops, I had to play it again to be sure I heard what you said. And 50 knots cruising. we cruise at 14 o.O

There have been many questions raised about this yacht and its owner. As far as im aware he failed to prove his claimed top speed. There is footage of it going crazy fast, so im sure it can, but if its really reaching the 70 knots? i doubt it.

@@maxb2787 The Discovery Channel made a video that aired at least 6 or 7 years ago on television featuring the owner in question. Called Extreme Yachts. There might be a clip here on KZbin. The yacht he had built at the time was about 100 feet long and could do at least 50 knots. I wish I could remember the name of that yacht and the speed she attained. He was asked how much did it cost to fill her up. He replied with: "It will melt your credit card."

When they were building the yacht I worked on, they wanted a guaranteed top speed of 16 knots. Everybody was absolutely thrilled when it turned out to have a top speed of 17 knots. Woohoo!

If this is correct, then she would have a range of around 450 miles at that speed! At hull speed, it is claimed she can do 3800 miles.

You need to consider that 65 knots cruising speed is achievable only in flat calm sea state. The range at 50+knots is around 600-800 nautical miles.

By "spin out" I'd think he meant more along the terms of "blow the props," surely, right? Spinning out is when the transom breaks loose in a turn and comes around before the bow, not when a PWC gets air like your example.

Basically a loss of traction. In an impeller you suck air and the impeller is no longer pushing water so you rev out the motor. ( Lots of fun on a jet ski)

That's crazy fast on the water. I imagine you'd have to do those speeds on glass-like water, or you'd wind up airborne with the screws out of the water, and a couple very expensive blown engines! I was on a boat that skipped over a couple swells coming out of the lea of an island, and blew a V-12, as a squall had gone over us. That made for a long trip home in some nasty seas. Stay safe out there!

I remember seeing a video of a yacht going really fast. They were on the bridge and had it up to really high speed but had a hard time with it and never got to full throttle. May have been this one. I'm surprised they didn't use turbines like coast guard cutters for open ocean. Maybe they should try a twin hull cat and see if that makes a difference.
