I wouldn't touch it, or even swap the engine. Just touch up the bumpers. It's a "track car", and that is a nice selling point. Maybe swap the turbo for a variable geometry turbo, rebuild the transmission with upgraded parts to handle the boost, and replace the rear bumper for a steel unit.

But this car wasn't a Turbo, in fact, the Turbos weren't even for sale back in '74, they didn't appear until '76 and they had a completely different tail. This particular tail wasn't even available until '78 and it's not considered a whale tail, the '76 and '77s were whale tails. It doesn't suit the car, IMO.

Try double-clutch when shifting gears. When you upshift, let rev drop a little while in neutral, then clutch in and engage next gear. On downshift, rev match while in neutral, then clutch in and slot in lower gear. That's how you drive cars without synchros or with damaged ones.

Another vote for leave it as is, I think you’re gonna take all the character out of it. Fix the transmission, sort the fuel injection, throw some classic Recaro recliners in it, drive it. It looks awesome with the RSR-look bumpers and whale tail and everything, just drive it! Also, laggy old school boost suits that car, why would you want a nice linear modern power band?! Buy a 991 turbo if you want that.
@StringTheoryBen
@StringTheoryBen 2 жыл бұрын
@ian trofimov I don’t disagree, but there’s something about the character of a car from a certain era for me. If you refine out too many flaws then you end up with a completely different car. Sometimes worse is better. I mean look at his reaction when it hits boost, it’s exciting, even if it’s technically worse. Not every car has to be perfect, it’s all about the experience.

@ian trofimov yes lag can suck but it can also bring the drama and violence that makes a car scary fun and is very characteristic of these older turbo cars. imo there are 2 laggy setups and one sucks but the other is fun. the one thats fun is when you stab the peddle the first time and lags but then all hell breaks loose and when you shift gears at high rpm you are still in full boost each time you shift the lag that sucks is when you shift gears and boost falls off each time and it needs to build back up every shift.this lag really makes high power cars slower. most prefer a lenear no lag setup for obvious reasons but some love the drama of a little lag. as you stated we have technology that can remove lag like variable vein turbos/correct piping sizing and turbo desig that make big power without the lag like ball bearing turbos and sizing turbine and compressor housngs right for your apllication/electronic boost control/even blow off valves help response as without one the air goes back into the comp wheel between shifts slowing its rpm but these older turbo cars were laggy thus some people dont want to remove that cars character

The K-jet has a frequency valve which can reduce the head pressure on the fuel distributor, allowing the flapper to move more easily, thereby enriching the mixture. The frequency valve is also connected to a pressure switch. Setting the fuel mixture there won't necessarily fix the problem. You really need to check the control pressure at the warm up regulator first!! Lean out a turbo car too much, and you melt pistons.

So swapping to the turbo transmission would give hoovie all the drivability he is looking for without having to touch the engine or turbo
@danielnelson4881
@danielnelson4881 2 жыл бұрын
@@waynepantry7023 What? He's just pointing it out because Hoovie is talking about changing all of the components of the turbo, instead of looking at what the issue really is. There's no way Porsche designed what I was seeing for a power band in this video, that's insane. At the same time, you don't want to take ALLL of that old school, boost lag danger out of the thing by throwing in a brand new twin scroll or something of the sort... At least in my opinion. I think this was worth mentioning for sure, since his tranny is on the fritz already, he might just throw a turbo tranny in there and then not have to incur the cost of upgrading the rest. He can just work on freshening the engine and turbo up a bit, while getting the driveability he wanted out of a longer gear set. No need to be a child, Watson. He just saw you over there breathing out your mouth, and thought you could use an explanation.

The boost is comedy gold, the period correct wheels are great. Nice that you got your "buy a bunch of car repairs, have your screws turned for free" punch card cashed in 🤣 I'd keep it mostly the way it is, don't go crazy with paint or erasing patina. Ceramic coat that patina.

Keep the configuration as-is. Engine, ridiculous tail, melty bumper. EFI convert it to get the fuel mix under control. Modernizing the turbo is tempting, but that comedy lag and then stab is absolutely fantastic and EFI is the only way you're ever going to get that to be anything but temperamental.

Way back when those cars were new on the lot, one was "borrowed" for a test drive from a dealership in the Charlotte, NC area. Later that evening/night it became the focus of a two state high speed chase in which I, as a small town LEO, took part.... Along with SC State Troopers in 5.0 Mustangs and Sheriff's Deputies in Chevy Cameros. My department, at the time, was equipped with Ford Crown Victoria "Interceptors" which were left far behind by all the other vehicles mentioned above....So we said screw it and broke off from the "Tail End Charlie Position" and returned to our duties in town......And the 911 easilly smoked all the Mustangs and Comeros. We never did find out what happened to that Porsche but I strongly suspect it became a drug runner's favorite car on the I-95 "Cocaine Corridor" of the era.

I can believe it. Even the lowly early NA cars are far quicker than they have any right to be. Those Porsche engineers totally nailed it. The balance of those cars is unbelievably good. When the turbo models first arrived they were just ridiculous, there was no keeping up with a well driven 930, even the big fast exotics got left behind when the roads got twisty. And well, Porsches reputation in motorsport speaks for itself. They've won pretty much everything that's worth winning multiple times, and continue to do so.

There's a reason the 930 Turbo was called The Widowmaker. LOL. That turbo is like an on/off switch. Imagine that thing kicking in when you're in a curve on a racetrack. Impossible to keep the back end behind you in that case. And Leonard's absolutely right -- you couldn't take a pristine, all-original '74 Carrera and do *anything* with it, other than keep it all original. But because this one was modified back in the day, you can do anything you want to with this car. A glorious opportunity!! I can't wait to see it when it's done!

A turbo engine car like that needs some DOT legal drag radials, like the Nitto 555G2 DR's, that you can pair with standard 555G2's up front. I am considering this setup for my Shelby GT500 due to the success others have had. SO happy you are keeping the turbo motor!!

I don't know why you want to re-do it when it's all together and driving fine as it is. I could see maybe adding some kind of ducting or cooling to address the melting bumper, and also I think it would be a good idea to modernize the turbo so that the boost comes on earlier and smoother. Also I have to say I did prefer the 5 spokes you had on in the intro, they suit it much better. Those new ones look too bling on it.

Many years ago I had a nice 1981 911SC which had been turbocharged with a RayJay Turbo. What would have been a 172 HP engine became a 270 HP engine. It was a stellar car. Owned it from 1983 for several years. It was such fun, and I ultimately put a factory boost gauge/tach into it and a higher potential speedometer. I regularly pegged that 170 mph speedo. Those things are much fun! Today, one of my Porsches I broke in on the autobahn and autostrada and it easily saw 182, from a displacement of 3.8 liters. My only 1981 used to display blue flames at gear changes and ran on super unleaded and some ST104. The '81 had the early turbo tail (1976-1977) on it and ran quite well without an intercooler--but it would have liked an intercooler! This car of yours needs some serious tranny work. I used a Carrera RSR pressure plate along with the stock 915 tranny. Trust me, the 915 is more than capable of handling your HP output. But it should be repaired first, and don't put your foot in it until the clutch pedal is completely released and engaged.
