You won't believe this is the Netherlands: Simpelveld - Schin op Geul ZLSM 17/4/2022

The Netherlands is not flat everywhere, and how can we show that better than from a steam locomotive? Cabview Heritage is a guest of the ZLSM, the South Limburg Steam Train Company. We drive over the Miljoenenlijn with the Swedish 1040 E2 of the Statens Jarnvagar from 1910. In this film you will not only get acquainted with South Limburg, but also with the new multi-camera setup. aw thank you sooooo much for having good microphones on it riding out of the depo, i miss this train whole heatedly, ive not been able to visit for awhile kerkrade simpelveld on full power on a busy hot summer day on the last ride has to be the best thing you can view and hear, you would not believe how much coal fly's out the top sometimes. the sound of this train hitting full power as it steams up the hill is such a beautiful thing to hear. it really is a damn shame you filmed the downhill, it has to do practily nothing the entire time as they can just coast the brakes without ever even touching power, they do sometimes ofcource but in principle its all very easy. the uphill is where the action is its way more impressive. the last bits to simpelveld can be heard for a good few minutes before the train arives while its still a good few km away

@@CabviewHolland Yes, it's where the cars are encouraged to smash into each other around the track. Here in the US, a demolition derby usually takes place in the open space inside the racetrack, but banger racing still goes around the track in circles. Highly entertaining!

Wow wat leuk. Ik woon bij het miljoenenlijntje (of ZLSM). Overigens geloof ik het wel dat dit Nederland is. Er moet toch 1 provincie zijn met het mooiste gebied😉. Ook eens leuk om de rit mee te maken vanuit het perspectief van de Zweedse stoomlocomotief (waar de ZLSM er 2 van heeft).

It’s a Swedish steam loco. They have 2 of the same type! Sadly, one is still in restoration (you could even see the rusty tender in Simpelveld at the beginning of the video)

The most beautiful province of The Netherlands. The province is called Limburg and this is in the south. South-Limburg is hilly and you really get the feeling as if you’re in a different country. We even talk a different language which the other Dutchies can’t understand haha

15 seconds in, and it already looks Awesome. Use to come frequently at the ZLSM, but these days we are more often to the north where we visit the VSM, and we have our own SSN in Rotterdam..... Do I hear a 4 Quartz size, like in music, great..... Also coming to the first station gave me a High Chitty Chitty Bang bang feeling.....😃 15 seconde in de clip, en het ziet er al Waanzinnig Spektaculair uit. Wij kwamen regelmatig bij the ZLSM ( Zuid Limburgsche Stoom Maatschappij), maar tegenwoordig zijn wij vaker meer noordelijk waar wij de VSM ( Veluwsche Stoom Maatschappij ) bezoeken, en wij hebben natuurlijk ons eigen SSN ( Stoom Stichting Nederland ) in Rotterdam..... Hoort ik daar een 4 kwarts maat, als in muziek, leuk..... Ook, als je eerste keer station in rijdt komt er een hoog Chitty Chitty Bang bang gevoel naar boven.....😋😉

Helemaal geweldige video! Ik ken de ZLSM al zolang ze bestaan, maar ben er al een tijdje niet geweest, en ik schrik er van dat ze minimaal de helft van het spoor vernieuwd hebben met betonnen bielzen?? Zo jammer, dat had hout moeten zijn om bij de stoom-sfeer te passen. Maar al die camera's erop en wat afwisselen is gewoon super!

​@@CabviewHolland dit heeft te maken met het onderhouden van het spoor. Houten bielzen hebben veel onderhoudt nodig. Niet voor niets heeft de NS de hoofdlijn ook voor het grootste deel voorzien van betonnen bielzen.

Mooi Camera werk met die op 4 plekken. Was je zelf ook op de loc? Ben zelf al ruim 3 of 5 jaar nog niet geweest daar, hoop dat ik de zomer vakantie er wel heen kan gaan, en een mooi stukje mee te gaan. Het spoor traject van Simpelveld naar Schin op Geul heet eigenlijk Geen Miljoenenlijn, alleen de spoorbaan Simpelveld richting Kerkrade heet zo, wist jij dit al?

What a curious locomotive. I don't see where the cylinder is . Is it under the front of the heat exchanger? Is the crankshaft also one of the axles? Rear axle maybe? Most curious! BTW, great vid! Upon further consideration, it must be 2 cylinders acting on a 2 lobe crankshaft. Yes?

Thanks! Everything that usually is on the outside of the wheels, is between them on this engine, except for the connecting rod which you can see on the wheel cam. It must make the engine wiggle less I think.

In which case the wiggle would be caused by torque on the frame? In which case i can see how that design causes less wiggle. Maybe I'm wrong about that. Now I'm curious. 😄 Anyway I love your work!

Thanks for your compliment! Yes, less torque on the frame. Must be less wear on the bearings too. You can see the wiggle at high speed in a ride on a German BR 23 that I will post soon at this channel, it has two outer cylinders. Compare that to last year’s BR 01 ride, that one has a third cylinder in between the other two. On the shots from the cabin, where you can see the boiler, you can notice the difference.

@@CabviewHolland I searched for BR 01 . I guess you have the 01-10 variant? Is that the only one with 3 cylinders? 3 cylinders for 3 lobes of action upon a single axle . I can see how that would make for a smooth pulling locomotive. Apparently, not many of those left that still have the aerodynamic fairings. That's unfortunate . I like those streamliners =)

Zijn de seinen rond station Wijlre-Gulpen nog niet operationeel? Heeft het treinpersoneel dan een aanwijzing van de treindienstleider nodig om de in onveilige stand staande seinen te mogen passeren, of zijn ze op een andere manier ongeldig verklaard?

Dat zijn bakens die de nadering van een sein aankondigen. Door de schuine plaatsing weerkaatsen ze het geluid van de trein en zijn ze dus hoorbaar voor de machinist.

@@AlwaysRM_ het is niet zo zeer Prorail die moeilijk doet. Het traject tot aan Schin op Geul is geen actieve route meer. Echter, Schin op Geul-Valkenburg wel. Nu is het probleem dat de machinisten om op dit actieve traject te mogen rijden een speciale certificering nodig hebben (een soort cursus) van de EU. Aangezien de meeste vrijwilligers zijn, is het te duur om iedere keer voor zo’n certificaat te moeten betalen en dus heeft de ZLSM besloten Valkenburg niet meer aan te rijden. Dat is nogal jammer want de provincie Limburg heeft samen met Prorail de wissel teruggelegd zodat de ZLSM kon eindigen op een van de oudste originele station van Nederland. Ik heb dat zelf nog meegemaakt.

I cannot show the numbers, because the speedo is not accurate enough and it might suggest incorrectly that the driver is driving too fast. But I might show just the maximum speed. Would you think that is a good idea?

There is no turntable at the Schin op Geul end of the line, so they have to run the down train with the locomotive in reverse facing orientation and the up train with the locomotive in reverse normal facing orientation.

You must know that not every piece of land is flat in this country. In the South of Limburg there are some hills to be found, not those big mountains as in Zieleniec in Poland but nonetheless hills. The landscape also changes if you reach the province border from the North of Brabant to Limburg. Suddenly you have so much nature around you. Believe me, it is amazing every time you see it.
