The mistake that she did after he got nasty with her was to stay sitting at the table until he stormed off. There are really strong International Defamation laws, but keep in mind that to rise to the level of “defamation” in the US at least it has to be both untrue and then damage the person’s reputation. She can prove it is true by the very receipt from the restaurant that she paid the bill at. Also, at least in the US, if the person is a public figure they have to additionally prove, by clear and convincing evidence, that the person who spilled the tea acted with actual malice in making the statement (intention to ruin them, as opposed to explaining what happened to them in the hopes that other women steal clear of a potential bad guy). Unfortunately in Korea (or fortunately, depending on who said what and why), according to Article 307 of South Korea’s Criminal Act, a person who publicly reveals facts that are damaging to another person is subject to punishment (and generally speaking from what I have heard, but certainly I can’t attest to this first hand, foreigners are less likely believed or protected). Even if the statement is true. Article 310 of the Criminal Act specifies that a person is exonerated from defamation only if these facts are true AND solely for the interest of the public (but obviously that last qualifier is so generic that it’s likely difficult to prove)

The first date rule I follow is that whoever invited the other person out pays for the main events, whethe it's the meal, the tickets to whatever event, the ride to get there if it's far, etc. It would be thoughtful if the other person chips in here or there, but it's not necessary for the first date.
