i love doing what you did here. i do not care about the cost of a new timer or toaster oven even. it is just interesting to see how it works and if you can fix what is wrong with it. finding a solution that many times requires almost nothing in parts or expense , just maybe cleaning or lubrication or bending or adjusting to compensate for wear is the fun challenging interesting part. good to see somebody else that enjoys this sort of thing.

As I sit here, taking apart my own timer switch to see if it's reparable, your video has been SUPER helpful for knowing what I'm supposed to be seeing in there :) Thanks!

I have a wonderful habit of taking apart every single appliance that anybody throws away and stripping it down to the bare Bones but when I took apart the first timer like this because I wanted to know what made the Bell go off, as a gearhead I was absolutely amazed I mean it's damn beautiful in there I really honestly want to put one in a shadow box and light it properly and show it off and put a bronze plaque saying it's some famous watchmakers fantasy machine. As far as I'm concerned it's a very cheap durable absolutely wonderful way to introduce children into the world of machinery and try to plant that seed that things don't work by magic they work because people dedicate their lives to making them work.

It's cheap timers like these that got me interested in mechanical watches and clocks. I found the exact timer like this in my old portable cooker. When I saw what is happening inside the mechanism I was hypnotised.

Hi Will. When I turn the timer switch control button I can hear the ticking of the mechanical clock gears. It makes sense that when the timer reaches the "off" position, it also turns off the circuit (toaster oven). The "off" position opens the contact inside the timer that disrupts the current from flowing. When the circuit is closed, or the timer switch is in any other position than "off", then the contact inside the timer should deliver current to the rest of the circuit. Mine is also hard-wired in series with a tiny lamp, which lights up when the circuit is closed. I'm looking to add a rocker switch to bypass the timer altogether when I need to surpass the timer's 15 minute capability.

I know this is a bit old, my timer was broken a few years back, im finally getting around to fix it, but what I discovered was the timer has a timer on it telling it to stop working , most people would just toss it and buy a new one ! 😮

Thank you for the video! I just fixed my toaster with the help of this. Spring seemed over wound somehow and I was able to release tension by one rotation ((need to take that small clasp off if you intend to try it out). I was about to give up!

Hey! Super cool! No part numbers or information about anything. Ya made a video. I didn't gain any knowledge from it. Good job.

We should all fear the day when the mechanical switches are replaced with electronic. They can be engineered to a a specific failure point and dont have gears to lube and jog back to life. And a BELL! Ancient tech.

The new timer I purchased was also defective. It would never reach to the end and ring the bell. These timers are made in Guangzhou, China. I waited 6 weeks for the stupid thing. My solution was to buy a toaster oven with an electronic timer and temperature settings. I found one on Amazon and waited 3 days for it.

I have an Oster toaster oven like that. Same problem. It goes past the zero mark and oven remains ON. Do you know how to fix it? I called the manufacturer, and they have no spare parts.

Most timers are going to be the same. You can try to replace the timer.

They make them over complicated on purpose. It's called over engineering so it will fail. They just wanted you to buy another new toaster oven. Everything is made like that now.

@@Bluemonkeydev You can find them on ebay (from Chinese distributors) as well. Be warned however it is very difficult to get things ordered from China right now. My order was cancelled.

Can you safely force these timers to 0 when you want to turn your oven off, or is that what broke yours?
@Bluemonkeydev
@Bluemonkeydev 4 жыл бұрын
"safely," absolutely. They are designed to do that. It will wear on their life since it will cause an arc, but it's going to do that when it gets to the end of the time anyway. These are designed to wear out, there just isn't any way to avoid that arc.
