We had rented for years and it was always assumed that the yard was our responsibility. A couple of places made sure that we knew it but, mostly we took the responsibility.

A renter of the home is ALWAYS responsible for yard maintenance, UNLESS the home owner (who does not live on the rented property) states in the rental agreement that the home owner would do yard maintenance. It is just common sense! When you rent a car you are responsible for keeping it clean and returning it in the condition you got it.

Would you cut the lawn at an apartment complex? Same concept, you're renting the place. All maintenance is supposed to be up to the landlord unless otherwise specified in the lease which in this case has nothing about grass cutting in it.

Absolutely agree with you. I am a renter and have rented for about 15 years (three different homes). I don't need it put into a contract to know that the lawncare of the home I am renting is my responsibility. This grass was too long to claim ignorance of what was needed or at least a phone call to the landlord to find out.

I have had to mow lawn that tall with push mower and it takes time but can be done. Especially if you are a young adult. After my spinal injury at age 63, it's a different story. Thank you for helping them out. Hope they can continue to keep up with yards now. And deer will even lay in yards with short grass, especially a back yard that size!

In a rental agreement, lawn maintenance responsibility typically defaults to the landlord as the property owner because their names are on file. It varies from state to state. I was given a discount on my rent at one of the locations I rented if I maintained the lawn. It was a nice having some extra cash during the summer months.

If it's a single family rental the tenant is responsible for lawn maintenance. If it's a multi family unit, typically the landlord is responsible unless stated differently in the lease.

We dont know what is written in the lease agreement. But the tenant must react properly in terms of clarifying the conditions and terms of the content of the lease about the actual responsible of the yard maintenance.

I have 2 questions for you. 1) What do you do with all those tree branches you're cutting, do you leave them on the curb for city disposal, or you have to load them away ? 2) On the tall and thick stuff, like @8:57 , do you go with high blades first to knock it down, then lower blades for subsequent passes ?

here's my opinion...lazy code enforcement officer or friends with the owner cause that lawn was bad WAY before the people moved in ...so they can just fine those poor people instead of finding the owner and fining them. I think they better be talking to the homeowner and get it in writing who's supposed to mow that yard. I'm so glad you helped them out so they didn't get the fine and you made it look great!

Personally, I would not have signed a lease that did not specify whether tenant or owner was responsible for maintaining the property. And I think the city, in the absence of a lease that specified the tenant as the person responsible erred in not charging the property owner for the clean-up.

Unless your rental agreement specifically mentions that the landlord or lease company maintains upkeep of yard, common sense should kick in that you're responsible. If for some reason you're not sure, contact the landlord. But typically, they are only responsible for major repairs (roofing, major plumbing, painting, etc.).

@@marcuslinton310 apartment complexes are a bit different than houses, they typically do have a full service that handles landscaping, etc. Houses on the other hand, the tenants are typically responsible for “normal” upkeep, which includes lawn maintenance, keeping the property cleaned, minor maintenance (light bulbs, etc). Unless otherwise specified by landlord/lease company.
