One of our police departments just retired a beautiful German Shepherd after 8 years of service and threw him a huge retirement party before he went to his forever home with his ex police partner. It was wonderful! My parents bred GS for the department here in SA and they were truly great to the dogs whether they made the cut or not. Im not a fan of the PoPo but when it comes to animals in their care I can't fault them.

Sadly, German Shepherds no longer become police dogs, due to the many health problems..mostly it is Belgian breeds that are trained to be these, because they do not have these severe back and hip problems.

​@@SusanKay- Yes, I truly believe that we will see our beloved dogs again in Heaven. My chocolate lab was 165 pounds. I was worried that he was overweight, but my DVM reassured me that he wasn't. He did warn me that he wouldn't have a long life due to his size, but he lived 2 full years past his life expectancy. He was like having a horse inside my house and he destroyed my sofas, but I didn't care. He was a gentle giant, and he was so good with our children. I miss him terribly.
