I have been looking for this video for years! Believe it or not, I was an extra in it... we spent 2 very long days filming in a very chilly warehouse in Toronto. The dancers were all from a professional troop from Quebec and they were definitely professionals. As you can imagine, this song lent quite a surreal atmosphere during the filming, even after hearing it steadily for those 2 days. And yes, Ms. Stratas has an incredible voice and is a very warm person. Thanks so much for posting!

It is haunting hopelessness actually. Youkali is an island, like a paradise where you dream about, but it's just a dream, it doesn't exist, a place to escape to in your imagination as the reality is so painful. This was during Weil's interim stay in France, fleeing from the nazis (being a jew and working with communist Brecht was not a good combo), before he finally crossed the pond to the us.

Haunting song. Great execution by Stratas--her voice is delicate and flexible and blooms on the top notes. She imbues the song with longing and a tinge of bitterness at the evanescent fantasy of the mythical place.

I first came across Teresa in the 1961 film 'The Canadians' where she sings a beautiful Indian lullaby. It is difficult to find a copy of this film in the UK. It hasn't been on television for many years.

Après avoir écouté plusieurs versions, j'ai élu celle d'Anaïs Le Marchand ( extrait du film la Fée) kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqq0dKaCp7OhgpY#t=12 et celle-ci de Teresa Strata. Seules ces deux versions nous transposent dans l'univers onirique et un peu mélancolique et éthéré qui est le véritable esprit de cette magnifique œuvre de Kurt Weill.
