Love Larry Goldings. I saw Larry Goldings play piano with Jon Hendricks and Company in the late ‘80s. Hendricks made a point of introducing him to the audience, saying he was a young musician to keep your eyes on. About a year later, I saw him at an outdoor festival in Oakland, CA, playing with the young alto player, Christopher Hollyday, who was getting a lot of promotion at the time as a “young lion.” I recognized him from the Hendrix show, and during intermission I went up to him and said how much I liked his playing, and that I remembered him from that show. He said something like, “Oh, yeah, that was a good gig, Jon’s a great guy.” Then I told him that he should tell Hollyday to introduce his fellow bandmates instead of just bowing and saying bye. He said, “Yeah, maybe so.”

I remember the Hans Groiner Monk videos back in the day. They still are hilarious.

He reminds me of Mose Allison when he sings. Pretty sure that he wrote that shut-ins song during the pandemic. Larry Rocks!

He's also the keyboard player for the Steve Gadd band, who essentially have been backing James Taylor since the early 2000s.

The singing is reminiscent of Dave Frishberg. This is such a fun episode.

also pretty impressive how good he is at making those clean bass patches on the Yamaha Reface CS and Korg MS-20. Neither of those synths store patches so he had to have set them himself and they are SOLID.

And hey, well worthy of a mention is his work with the great Dannielle DeAndrea. They write and perform new songs that sound like they've been in the Great American Songbook since before Jerome Kern knew any of the things you are/were/is.

I first got to know Larry's playing from the records he stared doing w/ John Scofield in the mid 1990s. Great player indeed. And yeah I'd know the Hans Groiner videos for a number of years, hilarious...He also did a recent one as the 'accompanist' of a woman who unknowingly sang the National Anthem in constantly changing keys for the 2021 C-PAC.
