It's so easy to be critical of a genius who is not perfect. You have to admire his skill as a player, we all regret not seeing more of Fabulous ay his best. Took a lot of guts and humility to do that interview and I thoroughly enjoyed every second. Go Phil, Go Pies

Phil carman was a genius Back in the day with the likes of jesualenko, blight, hart, quinlan and a few others, carman looked better than them, he was a delight to watch, a brilliant footballer just couldnt stop doing damage to himself and others, just could have been a hall of fame legend 🏅

1975 game against St.Kilda at Moorabbin was my first game and he kicked 11 goals in his white Puma boots. I went home and got a black texta and put a black puma stripe on my white runners and have always stayed true to Puma since that day. I met Phil one day running down the road I lived on and he stopped and signed my autograph book when I was walking with my mum. He was very polite and went on his way. The way he marked and played was very similar to Wayne Carey, but such a shame he wasn't more focused on the team.

I saw that game he played Vs Fitz @ Junction Oval Rd 3, 1975. I'm a 'died in the wool' Fitzroy supporter. Best player I've ever seen.(Bernie Quinlan a close 2nd) 6 goals at CHF to half time..& they win by 2 pts ! Fitz were winning in every other position on the ground. He was that good for the whole season. 75 Brownlow was his, especially when you know he missed 8 games !

Phil is one ballsy bloke. Nearly p155ed myself when he admitted to kicking the football at Ditterich. Lou Richards on Carmen: “the most exciting footballer ever to play with Collingwood ... and possibly the best." Peter Moore (dual Brownlow medalist): "Phil Carmen is the best player I've seen."

Rene Kink also stated the same as P.Moore. ie. He was the best. Btw, I'm a Fitzroy supporter. My dad took me to see Fitz Vs Coll , Rd 3 (April 1975) @ Junction Oval. This dude from SA, running, jumping, marking all over everyone. Making the rest of the players look like they running thru treacle, compared to him! Kicked 6 goals by half time at Centre HFwd! (Has Carey ever done that?) Fitz were beating Collingwood in every position on the ground. But this one bloke (Carmen ) was keeping them in it! They won by 2 pts. Would've streaked/won the Brownlow Medal in '75 if hadn't missed 8 games. And Coll would've certainly won '77 flag if he'd played. Most level headed people/& even opposition players agree.

When you look at it, that pathetic little boundary umpire got right up in Carmens face - chesting him front on, getting right up to him in a confrontation. What umpire does this especially a boundary umpire? Your job is to throw the ball back in if goes out of bounds. Thats it. What a tool, he didn't deserve to get butted , but he was confronting a player like that.

Collingwood should have moved heaven n earth to keep Carmen, with him the pies would have rolled Carlton by some distance in '79 granny. Presuming he was not injured/reported not selecting an 18 year old Daicos over Derick Shaw in '79 is also unforgivable.

He is extremely revered at Sturt in the SANFL. He literally saved that club when he took on the coaching job when no one wanted it and he dragged them off the bottom to eventually a GF which they lost but he laid the foundation for Sturt to win a flag 3 years later.

The amazing comeback by Sturt from not winning a game in Carman's first year as coach to finishing on top of the ladder in his fourth year as coach and just losing the Grand Final by only 10 points was simply inspirational. I think it was Carman's biggest achievement in football by helping & saving the Sturt football club. The Sturt football club owe Carman everything.

Another Mike Sheahan example of Football being an ALL Victorian game. No real talk of his career in the SANFL, and it seems those games don't count in his game tally ? Sheahan also plays down Stephen Kernahan's career at Glenelg ( 136 SANFL games ) and Malcolm Blight's at Woodville in other " Open Mike " interviews. Poor effort Mike !

As good as Phil was Tommy had Royce Hart Kevin Bartlett 4 Premiership teams etc as reference points....Phil just shot himself in the foot that's all by not fitting in....Royce swung games and was humble and Phil could have been the next Royce Hart if he just listened to Tommy...unfortunately for Tommy and Phil they couldn't mend their bridges and several Premierships never happened for them both....there is always a lot of luck in life....Tommy had plenty of luck at Richmond like Yabby Jeans at Hawthorn. ...Collingwood really had no luck from 1958 until 1990....Nathan Buckley is a bit the same no luck whereas the boys who stayed at Brisbane got 4 Premierships....at the moment Richmond has the luck....who knows which team is next....like watching Greg Norman play US majors no luck whatsoever.

Tom Hafey , unfortunately, was a one dimensional coach. Yes, he succeeded at Richmond with a team of champions, and thugs (ask Geoff Southby) .Kick it long (to Royce). Be the fittest team. What other strategies did he ever employ ? ? He flogged the players to exhaustion on the training track . Ask Kink, Moore, et al. That's why a group of senior players sort of got him the sack...Because he couldn't / wouldn't change his coaching methods ! (North in 77, after GF draw, were knackered /exhausted, as were Coll) Hafey ran them ragged during training at Victoria Park before GF Replay. Coll players will verify that. In contrast, Barassi , smart n switched on, gave Nth an easy week on the track. Result, comfortable win by Nth over a bedraggled, exhausted Coll outfit. The game evolved. Tommy didn't. Was always "kick it long " to whoever was ff or chf. Tommy was a nice bloke and obviously a fitness fanatic.

afl is an empire, mike sheahan is a propagandist. The entire interview was cringingly patronising and disrespectful to Carmen. He has paid his dues to Football Karma. He knows this and was rewarded later in his football journey for his previous work ethic with a professionally and personally rewarding stint at Sturt in a widely regarded and demanding football competition. sheahan:s subtle slights and aspersions on Carmen"s character were a detraction from the interview
