This is what the 80s were all about. Mowing down waves of nameless bad guys, cheesy one-liners, and a wicked steel drum soundtrack. Love it.
@stoogefest16
@stoogefest16 9 ай бұрын
James Horners steel drum accompaniment for the film must be the most idiosyncratic score for an action film yet. It works all the same, but it’s so unusual, even in a period of time when the parameters of the action genre were still being established. Also, if you listen closely it’s clear that Horner was largely rehashing parts of his score from 48 HRS (1982). The only difference is that the steel drums in Commando are more strident and repetitious, but that’s part of the charm. At least it succeeds in its task, which is to evoke tension in the audience.

Anyone complaining about 80's movies' violence can shut the hell up and remember what modern movies are like, eg. Logan and countless others with not only senseless violence but there isn't even any fun in the movie, just darkness and sickening levels of negativity and hopelessness. The hero also isn't really any individual, it's always some covert government/similar organisation...

Even though Dirty Harry had awesome respectable one liners, I’ll always say that Sean Connery with his James Bond interpretation is the king of one liners, and that’s when I noticed when it started. Then again we also had dudes like James Cagney, Humfrey Bogart and Clark Gable doing one liners in their movies too back in the day, but the 80’s movies is where it did start to get ridiculously overdone, but I personally still loved it with a passion lol 😆.

Yeah I know when I grew up into a adult I do see some of the odd over the top and some corniness of some of those old action movies but I don't make fun of it. Like I said it's probably the youths that don't know what real movies are. They just know over the top CGI computer crap special effects in movies and thinks everything below that is trash. It's like I had a cousin who got a HD plasmas flat screen TV when they was new. When he saw a movie on a old box tv he was complaining how "poor" the quality of the images was. I'm just sitting thinking to myself "I don't see the difference besides a price between the TVs". I still have a old box tv from the 90s and it still runs like a champ. Those new fancy flat screen tvs need to be replaced every few years because they keep breaking. First time I bought a flat screen tv I went name brand. Within a couple 2-3 years it already was screwing up.

A pure, hardcore action extravaganza. Arnold's next film after The Terminator. From producer Joel Silver before 2 of the Die Hard films, the Lethal Weapon and The Matrix sagas. This was Arnold in quinessential action mode and defining his legacy in the action film game. Plenty of shoot outs without reloading, outlandish explosions, unbelievable kills and one liners galore. Arnold and Stallone were rivals and friends in the industry. 5 months after Stallone put on Rambo:First Blood part II, Arnold came out with Commando (same year). As a matter of fact, both characters were an influence on the CONTRA video game series by Konami. RIP to Bill Paxton (Intercept Officer) and composer James Horner. 2 other good films from the director, Mark Lester are Stephen King's Firestarter (1984) with Drew Barrymore and Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991) with Dolph Lundgren & Brandon Lee.

This is just pure 80s action gold. Not a action thriller, there's no real attempt at creating tension. I mean, Arnie is shown first carrying that huge log. The main antagonist is a middle aged man with a porn mustache, a pot belly and fake chain mail he probably knitted himself. Is there any doubt who will win? And the one-liners, so many great one-liners. And gotta love Rae Dawn Chong in this, she's not just comic relief and certainly no damsel in distress, but has some great moments. It is kinda weird this movie is just two years older than Predator, they feel like from completely different eras. Commando is so over-the-top ridiculous it could and maybe should have been a pretty bad B-movie. But somehow it all works and watching it will always be a blast!

Arnold hadn't yet started to flex his comedy muscles, so having an actress like Rae Dawn Chong really lifts the tone so the movie isn't depressing like Death Wish or similar. She's capable (a pilot and driver), intelligent (tries several times to immediately distance herself from the kidnapper and contact the authorities), adaptable (realises who is the real villain and stops the authorities hurting Matrix/quickly devises an escape plan when he's arrested) and doesn't instantly want to jump into a relationship with a man who (justified or not) just murdered several people in front of her. Plus she's funny and cute - what's not to like?

I don't know what compelled composer James Horner to go absolutely HAM on the steel drums, it doesn't really work at all, but it's just one in a long line of crazy decisions that make up Commando. You'd swear this is supposed to be a parody of 80s action movies, but everything is done with a straight face and I love it

Conan the Barbarian is probably my all time favorite movie. On the surface, it's a great, dark, low-fantasy adventure movie, elevated by an amazing score and interesting archetypal and philosophical themes for any who care to look deeper. As well as great production and costumes. Do you know the riddle of steel, boy?

Hey Guys @16:52, pause the video and you can actually SEE the wire connected to Sully's ankle. It's there to hold him up making Arnold appear to me much stronger than he really is. Or to make sure the actor doesn't accidentally fall down the cliffside. Either way I noticed it in the shot. lol.

The best and iconic Arnie shoot 'em up scene: Arnold shooting an M60 with a 25-round belt and wipes out an entire paramilitary force with 100 times more bullets. So many classic, cheesy quotes in this movie too: "I let him (Sully) go." "I eat Green Beret for breakfast, and I'm very hungry." "Slitting a little girl's throat is like cutting warm butter." and my favorite... "You don't need the girl. You can beat me. What's the matter Bennett? Don't you want to put the knife in me? Don't you want to look me in the eye and see what goes on when you turn it? Don't deprive yourself the pleasure. C'mon Bennett....let's PARTEEEE." The funniest moment of the film was Arnold getting into Bennett's head about killing John with his knife. Next, Bennett has the biggest turn on ever.

5 years prior to this movie, Bill Duke (Cooke) did some pretty fine work supporting Richard Gere in 'American Gigolo'. The script and Duke's part were pretty silly, but he managed to nail the role of an erstwhile pimp pretty handily.

Always fun to point out that actor Vernon Wells who played Australian-accented baddie Bennett had previously chewed up the screen as Mel Gibson's arch-nemesis in "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior" when he played red-mohawked, leather-chapped, bare-assed, feathered-shoulder-padded psycho motorcyclist Wez.

Actually, Commando and Predator are both in the same universe. The made up Central American country where Matrix was supposed to go to kill the president in Commando (Val Verde) is the same Central American country where Dutch and his team were in for the movie Predator. Apparently, An early draft of Die Hard was going to be a sequel to Commando with the John MacLean role being John Matrix. In fact, one of the demands made by Hans Gruber in Die Hard was for “political prisoners” in Val Verde to be released from prison, which places Die Hard in the same cinematic universe as Commando and Predator (in truth it was just a leftover from the original intention of the movie being a sequel to Commando).
