For me and a lot of people. Season 2 was a "huh" moment for The Wire. But by the time the 2nd season wound down and the transition back in season 3. I realized it was a great story told. While being a bridge for seasons 1 and 3. One of my favorite shows of all time.

@@Al-ji4gd I think is was a couple of things. The story told in season 1 was so good. The sudden transition to the docks was pleasantly out of left field. The majority liked the 2nd season even if they didn't like it in the beginning. Again such a great story told with equally great acting. Great bridging from the 1st season to the 3rd. And extended the perspectives to be wider. Damn what a great show.

Fantastic reaction. Season 2 focuses on different aspect of city life and can be a bit disorienting for some, but it’s just another part of the great picture that the show is trying to paint. By seasons 3-4 as the rich tapestry that the show weaves begins to fully take form, you’ll fully understand why this show is held in such high regard. The Wire is about many things, including basically America, but one way to look at is how individuals are trapped in various systems (police, gangs for now, and other institutions to be explored in season 2 and beyond) and how those systems crush those who try hardest to reform them.
@StudioMod

Season 2 is the most relatable season though. I feel like Mr. and Mrs. Movies will definitely find a lot of joy in it as it's essentially the white, lower-middle class/blue collar's place in the world of crime, politics, and policing. I think that's why a lot of people love Season 2 even though at first it seems like a huge departure from the rest of the show. By the time you realize how it connects everything together, it's already got you hooked. It's very Sopranos-esque in its themes and overall ability to make you sympathize with the characters.

I mean it really is the same story throughout the whole show. This isn’t American Horror Story. They introduce a new focal point each season but it’s not a different story. Same cops, same characters, same bad guys, same locations, continuing the same story where they left off of season 1. They just introduce a new focal point but that’s not the same as being a whole new story each season. Same story being continued, just expanded with some new chapters, new characters and new problems while continuing the story started from season one.

McNulty told Landsman he didn't want to ride the boat early in the season, and Landsman obviously would have told Rawls. That's why he got screwed even though he had wisened up by the time Rawls asked him. The detail that I appreciated and found most admirable about this season (and is often missed on first watch) was how they set up and paid off the two loose plot threads of the Dierdre killing and Cedric dirt-- two unseen mysteries introduced early in the season, that linger throughout, and get resolved in the last episode. Any other show would have treated those as opportunities for big, cheap/hollow, audience-grabbing drama, but instead they're artfully revealed in shockingly understated yet meaningful ways. Dierdre not being killed by D'Angelo is just another example of him trying desperately to fake being something he isn't, and Cedric being dirty is just an example of how the broken system eats everyone, good or bad, as well as how much of a factor leadership and influence from others can be.

@StudioMod
@StudioMod Жыл бұрын
That's a way to look at it, but I personally don't think that way. The reason is that the huge cast change and the newer generation taking over is one of the largest themes of the show. To cut it into two parts in your mind would almost dissuade you of feeling the impact of that. But I totally understand what you mean, overall. It does feel like S1-3 conclude pretty well and the last two seasons are start of a new, but nihilistically similar era in Baltimore...

I agree with this so much. The Wire SHOULD ABSOLUTELY be shown in High Schools and academically studied to the fullest potential. You can learn everything about how the United States works just by watching the show. The role of a mayor... the role of the governor... the role of schools, the press, and the police... the pressure of economic factors forcing the bureaucrats like the governor, mayor, and assemblymen to make cuts to the budgets of the schools, press, and police. And most important, the gangs and how people who fall under the tide of this enormous pressure survive with no recourse from society to help them. It shows you almost every path in life. It covers infidelity, alcoholism, losing your soul to a job, losing your soul to drugs, criminality, education, and providence. It's the greatest television show ever created and it will never be topped simply because other shows have so little to offer comparatively. This isn't just a show to entertain... this is a show to educate. And yet, it's SO entertaining. I can't praise it enough. But I'll say this: when was the last time a writer of a television show was interviewed in the WHITE HOUSE by the PRESIDENT? It's not often, I'll tell you that. Regardless of what you think about President Obama, he did that right. And he deserves some respect for giving The Wire the credit it deserves. Without The Corner and The Wire (both by David Simon), the world would be just a little bit less well-off. And for that, I say thank you to David Simon and the incredible lengths he and his partners went to make The Wire a reality.

@@knowyourhistory Well to be fair, Season 4 is an untouchable masterpiece. But Season 2 is the most relatable to the rest of the country as it shows precisely how things bleed over into the regular world for people who aren't cops, politicians, or gangsters. Season 2 is essentially the average working man's season. That's what's great about this show. Season 1 is about the police. Season 2 is about the blue collar workers. Season 3 is about the gangs. Season 4 is about the schools. And Season 5 is about the press. And even though each season is themed, it makes sure to continue the themes of past seasons in the background. For instance, the gangs and police are well represented in every season, and the politics are omnipresent throughout. It's just the best way to make a television show and as high as it's regarded, I feel like it's still not regarded highly enough. But that's just me.

There is an underlying theme to this season. Throughout the season, there are scenes on both sides of the law that mirror each other showing the extent that the police and the drug gangs have evolved into parallel, and in some ways very similar, entities. Often these mirrored scenes may not be readily apparent, since they often occur episodes apart. This starts in the first episode with Rawls/Avon using identical dialog to tell McNulty/D'Angelo to put their ass in the chair. It continues with the Pit boys/Police beating Johnny/Bodie, the hospitalized Johnny/Kima begging Bubbles/McNulty for info on the street/case. Avon is determined to send a message by putting a body on the hood of a car, Rawls is determined to send a message by putting dope on the table for the cameras. After Kima is shot, both sides say it was not worth it (but from very different perspectives). In the end, D'Angelo is sentenced to 20 years, but given all these parallels it might be reasonable to expect him to get parole in 13 years... and 4 months. 3

"it's fucking depressing" should be the tag right under the name of the show in the Cd Box. Good call on there not being really good or bad people per se on this show. One of the biggest recurring themes in the show is that of the institutions, and how they are resistant to change and reform and how they corrupt the people who compose them. Kima is a great example, she's probably the cop with the biggest moral compass on this season yet even she didn't give a second thought about participating in the beatdown of Bodie. The next seasons will bring more and more institutions into play and things might seem less connected, but they are. Some things mentioned in this season won't pay off until seasons 4 or 5, a long way down the road. The show was remarkably cohesive, especially considering it was on the brink of being cancelled for most of its existence.

D'Angelo's a poor fucking kid too. His mom is a walking nightmare on two legs. Despicable woman, doing that to her own son. I just wanted to reach into the screen and grab her face.

I definitely have to agree with Mrs. Movies and McNulty about the value of going after the state senator instead of focusing on the Barkesdale leadership.

Crooked Politicians are no better than people selling drugs. They just have connections, and know how to rig the game and move the goalpost when it benefits them. And the law CLEARLY doesn’t punish everyone fairly. The officials responsible for (deliberately) poisoning Flint’s water faced no consequences. That’s just one example off the top.

Interesting how you call Bodie “Preston”. I know that’s his legal first name but most people refer to him as Bodie in the show and outside of it. I’m really enjoying these reactions. This is my favorite show of all time.

You guys are probably ahead already but just to be clear plenty of characters and plot elements carry over from season to season. But the show tends to add a new big focus like unions, schools, politics, etc.

Minor point, but: there's no corruption in the allocation of federal grant money*. The money will be lawfully disbursed to the owners of the properties that are to be renovated/demolished/etc. The corruption is that they paid politicians to be tipped off about which property they should buy in order to legally receive the big federal money *(or if there is, it's nothing to do with the Barksdale crew) The 'enemy' is the system. The system incentivises all the behaviour you see in the show and traps everyone in it.
