The Wire is grounded in reality, but they do not always provide an explanation of what is shown, so let's look at what the problem is at the port of Baltimore. Since globalization means more import/export, you might think the port would be busier than ever. The problem is geography: Baltimore is 2/3 of the way up the Cheasapeake Bay, on the Patapsco River. That used to be an advantage - it put the port farther to the west, hundreds of miles closer to the major industrial cities in the "rust belt". The first commercial freight railroad in the US was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, founded in 1830, which carried freight to and from the port and the farms and factories in the Midwest (If you've ever played "Monopoly", you may have "owned" the B&O Railroad). With the decline and relocation of heavy industry, that location is now a disadvantage. To reach Baltimore, ships sail right past the port of Norfolk, at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and spend another day to reach Baltimore. Then when leaving, they have to spend a day backtracking down the bay, passing Norfolk again, to reach the ocean. For a lot of cargo, it is faster to just unload at Norfolk. To make access to Baltimore easier, the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal was built, so ships could travel directly north from Baltimore to Philly, NY and NJ, but the canal is not deep enough to handle the larger container ships now in use. What Frank is lobbying for is to have the C&D Canal deepened, allowing larger ships a more direct path to Baltimore, instead of unloading at Norfolk. Frank is not pocketing any of the cash from the Greek, he's using it to support the union efforts and the workers.
@gwenjackson8583
@gwenjackson8583 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that explanation! I knew that Frank was working with the Greek to help his union but I wasn’t always sure exactly what he was lobbying the politicians for…and I’ve seen The Wire at least 5 times if not more.

27:10 You're pretty much bang on Frank's motivation. He wants to get the canal dredged so that the newer, larger ships can dock in Baltimore. It's not deep enough for some of them to dock and offload cargo, and as bigger ships become the norm Baltimore's port got less and less traffic.

The prisoners buy drugs with money sent from home. People can send prisoners money to put on their “books” which can be used to buy many things in the prison like food, snacks, toilet supplies, even elections and clothes can be sent. The prisoners also have jobs where they get paid a little bit of money. The prisons have vendors set up where family members can buy items and send to the prisoners. They can only use certain vendor. It’s a big business. A guys like Avon, D, and wee bey probably has a few thousand dollars on his books Avon probably more.

40:00 yes, police can arrest anyone if off duty. Not being on the clock doesn't remove the powers of law enforcement. It is expected that if they do see a crime being committed they step in. Now if you are not in your normal area of work. (different city or something like that.) You tend to just detain and let the locals take over. Former Law Enforcement.

@@AngeloBarovierSD This season really shows off how far the rabbit hole goes. It's not one side or the other, it's people stuck in a bad situation and need money who may turn a blind eye to get themselves ahead or maybe a bit farther up the road. Money makes the world go round, and under the table money spits back a bit, yet not enough is spit back to make gov'ts or police forces concerned, in fact may influence them.

For your edification, prison is a barter & favor system. Debts are typically paid in commissary (If I owe you $20, I buy you $20 worth of whatever you want from the prison commissary), an outside source putting money on your books, or with favors, up to and including sex and violence.

@brandoncollins1225
@brandoncollins1225 Жыл бұрын
@@TheMerovingienne Misophonia has more to do with repeating or overbearing noises. People's mouth noises are typically the one that all of us that suffer from it can agree on that is a huge trigger. Tapping, fidgeting, sniffling, faucets dripping, overly loud typing, mouse clicking, people breathing too heavily, whispering, ambient noises like when someone props open a door and you hear folks in a hallway while you're in a room, etc. It is all tremendously overstimulating and can cause a fight or flight response. I had a coworker years ago that would repeatedly slam her mouse down on her desk while she was using it. She never used a mouse pad. One day, while she was at lunch, I put a mouse pad on her desk. When she came back from lunch she very loudly started asking folks who put it there. She put it in her desk drawer and didn't use it. I had to then be direct with her. Once I told her what was going on with me and the noises her mouse made when she used it, she became very sympathetic and started using it. Some folks just think folks like us are weird and go out of their way to try and trigger us and laugh at the results. You'd be surprised by how many people don't realize how cruel that is and how shitty they're being when they do that.

All the seasons still follow the stories from the previous seasons just with new characters and situations introduced while still continuing the story of all the characters introduced from season 1. That’s what TV shows do, it’s normal and the format for shows to introduce new characters and potential plots to add to the original story and chapters in new seasons. That doesn’t make it a whole new show. A whole new show would be an anthology series like American Horror story. Duh
