The protagonist of "The Tell-Tale Heart" murdered a guy and stuffed the body in his crawlspace. He would have gotten away with it, too, except that he kept hallucinating that he was hearing his victim's heart - and it drove him so crazy that he dragged the body out in the middle of a visit from the police.

Would he be called the protagonist then? Are protagonists just the main character good or bad? Or are they the character that's supposed to be good that we are focusing on?
@Philistine47
@Philistine47 Жыл бұрын
@Alistair102040 The first: protagonists are just the main characters of their stories, good or bad. You may be thinking of "heroes" as specifically _good_ characters that a story focuses on; some protagonists are anti-heroes or even outright villains. (And sometimes protagonists can be pretty villainous without anyone - audience or even the writer - really realizing it, because seeing the story mostly or solely from the protagonist's perspective makes it easy to make excuses for them when they do awful things.)

@@Philistine47Invader Zim is a good example. Zim is an evil alien trying to take over the world but is the protagonist of the show whilst Dib, the human trying to stop him, is the show’s antagonist because he goes against the protagonist’s goal.

I love that in the church after the funeral, you can hear "Abide With Me" being played on the organ, which was also used in the pilot of "Midnight Mass."

they don’t all have vascular dementia. Everything that’s happening is Verna messing with them and driving them crazy

He also had a pretty prominent role in "Midnight Club." I'm glad that he got to do a bit of actual acting at the end of "Mass," because his character was super one-dimensional until the scene outside the rec. center where he tries to console Howie and then he and Ooker talk. Happy that he's carved out a solid space in the Flanagan stable.

Regarding the Noah/Raven Bible reference: basically, during the flood, after the rain had stopped, the ark was floating atop the waters, which were gradually receding. Noah wanted to know if there was dry land anywhere, so he sent out a raven and a dove. The dove didn’t find anything and came back; seven days later, he sent it out again, and this time it came back with an olive leaf. After seven more days, he sent the dove out again and it never came back-because it had found dry land. But the raven never came back. It kept flying until the waters completely receded.

The whole show is a fantastic take on Poe but I really do like this specific take on Tell Tale Heart, probably coz that story is one of the most well known for me (& I think generally) so I kinda knew what was vaguely going to happen but they pulled it off in a unique way & surprised me. As always, great acting all round.

I too love the telltale heart and thought that this episode was brilliantly executed and had an excellent twist at the end

Each one of these deaths are from a Poe story. This was The Tell Tale Heart. It’s fun to watch you guess as someone who doesn’t know his works. Prospero was “The Masque of the Red Death”. Napoleon was “The Cat”. I like seeing Flanagan’s take on all of these, but they haven’t done “The Raven” yet. Verna (Raven spelled backwards,) isn’t the devil. She is based on another Poe work.

Your guesses are interesting. It would help if you knew more of Poe's stories, then seeing how Flanagan and Co. level them up makes you really appreciate the brilliance of this series.

27:36 The raven aka Verna is behind everything that's happening to the ushers and when you get to the finale of episode 8 it will all come full circle, awesome mini series not a fan of Edgar Allen Poe's works but damn this was indeed something else, Mike flanagan really did a good job weaving his stories together to make this show crazy awesome! 🔥💯😬😁😉👍

When Dick Cheney has an artificial heart, he had no heartbeat because it runs nonstop. No need for a rest beat or to pump chambers as our heart does, just runs continuously.

I wonder what type of person would prefer fame? Maybe actors and musicians and so on... being famous for your art is different from just being famous though. I think most people who want to be internet famous want it for the opportunities to make money, not just the fame aspect.

ZERO SPOILERS but... Notice that NONE of the Ushers is sleeping at all! That's why (well, one of the reasons why) they are hallucinating when Perry and Camille didn't. They keep complaining about one reason or other that each and every one of them is having total insomnia. None has slept at all since Roderick organized *that* dinner in episode 1! Prospero (Perry) was shown in episode 2 going wide awake while everyone else was still sleeping. Camille wanted to have sex because she couldn't sleep, her assistants refused and, since she couldn't sleep anyway, she went to Victorine's lab in the middle of the night. Napoleon is drinking himself into a comma and going way over his head on drugs because he can't sleep. Victorine was blaming it on overworking and is having blackouts. Frederick is always at 100% and increasingly out of control because, since he can't sleep, he is knees deep in that dodgy cocaine Napoleon gave him to keep functioning. Tamerlane (Tammy) is having blank outs where she forgets where she is and does things she can't remember later, like "waking up" in the middle of a conversation she was actively holding with her husband this episode. Roderick keeps going to Fortunato every night and having this monologues. And going more and more stressed each night. One thing we haven't seen him do lately? Sleep. Madeleine is always off screen and made of pure ice, so nothing to see there. So THAT is one of the reasons they are all having hallucinations but Petry didn't. He only spent one night not sleeping before dying. The other is that, yes, each one of them is taking either some version of ligodone, or of the synthetic drug August talked about the previous episode, which is itself made from Ligodone, or in Tammy's case, her own "all natural" homeopathic version.
