Sometimes there’s a surplus in a category. That’s what I look for when I want to roll with the punches.

Ben, I have to add that you were wrong on the queso and chips. It’s GUAC and chips!! It’s hard not to add that to my order! Especially when the chips are super fresh and maybe a little warm! :) love the budget nerds episodes!!

Thanks so much for this! My twin and I YNAB together, and we are "Accountabili-buddies". This video reminded me that I really do need to budget for spontaneity, even if I am in debt-paydown mode.

Just got your video recommended and need to say.. it was spot on. You really hit me with some of your tips and that really hard. Never thought about NEEDING a goal to not overspend or impulse spend. Thank you for that!

Yea thats like the people that say" I work too hard to not enjoy my money" notice how only broke people say things like that, never heard one rich person say things like that, lol

Same! We are both the "treat yo' self" kind. I eventually realized that unfortunately, someone has to be the one to say "we have food at home" and I guess that will have to be me!

I thought that, too! I was kind of disappointed that their names were switched from what I had in my mind's eye. (Ben should be Ernie, and Ernie should be Ben, IMO). haha!

I like this video. I watched one about the 5 things in YNAB many people aren't using and it made my eyes cross. I guess I need to start at the beginner level. I'm a senior citizen and we never had "apps". We did it the old-fashioned way--either bought an accounting ledger or drew up our own ledger page by hand which is what I do because I can't find ones pre-printed that fit my lifestyle. I may try the YNAB after watching these two gentlemen.

Keep watching these guys, and be patient with yourself. YNAB only allows you to budget the money that you currently have in your possession, a dramatic difference from other forms of budgeting. In other words, you can only budget for an entire month IF AND ONLY IF you have ALL the money for the entire month when you budget. AGAIN, be patient with yourself! I am in my 50's, and it took me about 3 months to really understand YNAB, and about 5 months before I felt really proficient. I still prefer the web site over the phone app, but I do use the phone app regularly when I am travelling.

Try it! they have so many resources that show you how to use the online and app versions so you'll never be on your own! it took me a few months to know how to use it as well even though I'm fairly young. Don't be discouraged about the change, YNAB is amazing and truly helps!!

Love your videos. How to stop stockpiling food and essentials? Covid made it worse! When do you buy your next box of laundry detergent? When you get down to half the box? Totally out? I usually have two boxes. Remember toilet paper shortage? Also book addiction? I buy lots of books even though I may not read for years? Thanks!

I needed this. I spent my entire savings (14k) in 3 months after signing a new apartment lease. Started using YNAB again, and I’m getting clear on my priorities before spending anything. Debt and essentials first.

I needed this. Thank you for this episode. Working on taking some deep breaths before shopping. Also, knowing that sometimes it happens. And then sometimes, savings happens. In search of balance...

Love this 💕 thank you guys so much. My husband and I love eating out too, but I am thinking of taking some of our eating out money and splitting it between our personal spending. I’m going to try this because it’s a lot harder to buy take out when it’s my “own” money versus the eating out money.

Thanks for the post! My last serious relationships have me looking at my spending habits more. I’m really bad and definitely have an aversion to looking at my accounts. A fear almost. I grew up poor and never had savings or owned anything. It feels impossible like that stuff doesn’t happen to people like me and my family.

I know the feeling! Growing up poor just scares you about money but YNAB has helped me get a handle on it and break the generational cycle of living paycheck to paycheck. It's so nice to be able to have control and not let money have power over me : )

How do you stop using "rolling with the punches" as a crutch? I'm a pretty big impulse shopper, but I've never been in debt and that's because I've mastered rolling with the punches. I always have wiggle room in my budget for these purchases and always "find a way" to buy them even if it means taking money away from savings or other categories. I guess it's just a mindset shift to realize that saving is more important than the impulse purchase but it's still hard to do when you can easily get yourself out of trouble by just moving money around.

I love online shopping because ai don't go in the store and move away from my list. I can still buy treats and snacks but stay on budget. If I ho to the store like Walmart I may buy a shirt or other things that I don't necessarily need.

I'm struggling. It just seems like things come up that I didnt budget for. My son, who is graduating, says he left his clothes for graduation at the house and he needs them in the next two days. Next days shipping 27.00. Had already spent my misc budget. His school waited till the last minute to decide on in person graduation. 3 weeks before date. Hotel prices went up to 300.00 night. We thought it would be online graduation like 2020. Nope. I am categorizing now. Stressed. I want my budget to be stable and its not. It seems the only way it is, is too never got anywhere. I'm older- so I have seen alot and people say your have 5000 for car maintenance but I remember breaking down and needing that much. Oh you have 3000 for medical but I remember medical one year being around 3000. Stressed.

Sending a little blip of encouragement to you. Some months, rolling with the punches is just too darn punchy and tiring. In those times, I remind myself that having a budget has bolstered me in other ways that help me weather the storm and get my little family back on track ASAP. Congratulations on your son's graduation - a true accomplishment in a wildly difficult year!

Like Shannon C, sometimes rolling with the punches is exhausting! I was happy to realize that although there was some priority shifting, and some funds were transferred from one category to another, there was a HUGE WIN. I reminded myself that I didn't have to charge any of the expenses to a credit card; I didn't have to carry a balance that would accumulate interest charges. I hope that is the same for you.
