Netflix had an opportunity to really showcase the spirit of the young entrepreneurs of Africa. The hustle in Africa is like no other. It takes a lot to make it out there. They could have showcased the cast in their element. Swanky was on the cover of GQ magazine for goodness sake! Show him flying around Africa and styling the rich and the famous. Annie is not just a major artist's wife. She's got her own thing going on in Acting and "influencing". Would have loved to see more of what Louis does in his home country. The drama is somewhat entertaining, but it's inauthentic and will get tired very quickly. I'm already over it to be honest.

You hit the nail on the head Funky. The show is pandering to a USA crowd and not fully reflective of African culture. The other thing is its only shot in South Africa but half of the cast is not from South Africa. It would be great if they also shot in Ghana and Nigeria as well. It would also be great if they showed these guys in their regular lives. E.g Naked is a DJ, why dont they show him at gigs and on radio and telling us what type of topics they tackle on radio. The others are in entertainment or have other businesses….why don’t they show us what they do and bring in African context to it. The show would be fire. They can still show the glamour of their lives but it would also be great to use it as an opportunity to show the world that we’re not hut people nor are we just imitators of America.

I think the issue once again is ownership. The owners or production think we want to see this because of what we so-called represent over here in America. It's like that time Oprah went to Ghana and there was a hip hop esque clothing store called Mah Nikka..without the k..it's sad. The same thing is happening on social media. These stereotypes are bleeding into the masses, and all these bm bw issues have been brought up mainly by African podcasters and bloggers. I'll give you 1 example; there is a Doctor from Louisiana who wrote a book about basically colorism..I bought it and listened to many of their discussions; this Doctor stated they may not know enough because they are 1st generation Am.from Ghanian parents in Louisiana..they then went on to post a snippet of an interview from Actress Thandie Newton..and allowed her audience to argue over light skin privilege. I commented and told her she knew what would happen and she was wrong for posting a 30 second clip from a 9 minute conversation where none of that was the topic..they quickly cut off comments and posted the link for others to view for themselves. It's sickening and bringing Americans back 60 years

I totally agree, but we know why their filming in South Africa. Different parts of the continent has beautiful/luxurious locations “not just South Africa”, and the show runners need to do a better job showing those areas, and the areas that aren’t that luxurious.

From an African’s perspective: Que You nailed the reason why Bonang left the show. Bonang is and has always been that girl BUT is mainly only known in Southern Africa. I think Bonang came on the show expecting to be the center of everyone’s attention and when she didn’t get it she felt slighted. She’s used to being the only “IT” girl in the room - IN South Africa. But in a room full of people from different countries, some who are much more relevant than she is, she’s not used to that. From Western Africa, 2 Face (2Baba) and Annie are celebrity royalty, mainly in Nigeria where they are from. It’s actually very surprising to see their level of celebrity on a show like this. I’m from Ghana and I can tell you Fantana is a nobody in Ghana. She’s never released any real music in Ghana. I’m guessing this show is to help kickstart her music career. She’s best known for being a socialite and the child of a very rich female politician.

Love from Uganda (Zari's country). I was surprised by the level of humility Diamond has around Zari. When she confronted him infront of Fantana and he tried to calm her down not using her name but by calling her 'Mama T'. That's mad respect from the African point of view. He speaks to her as though she is still his wife. At that point I thought Fantana would see that she was being played but nope, not many braincells in there. Skin bleaching in Africa stems from the legacy of colonialism. You have to remember that many countries in Africa became independent in the 50s and 60s, they are still recovering from colonial rule. Apartheid only ended in South Africa in 1994. Skin bleaching is also a big thing in many Asian countries which were under colonial rule e.g. India. I think we sometimes forget that the white standard of beauty not only affects us in the West but across the whole globe. Africans are also not exempt from today's social media beauty standards which overall promote fairer, lighter skin.

Andile is the villain of this season because of his situation with Zari and then what he tried to do with his 2 baby mommas
@mysisterisafoodie Жыл бұрын
Another part that wasn’t mentioned is that baby mama number one was hitting up Andile to fix stuff in her house, WHEN SHE HAD A HUSBAND! Baby mama 1 remarried, before Andile. But guess what, her husband also left her, because he also couldn’t stand her inappropriate relationship with Andile.

This was a great take on the show. I live in South Africa and a lot of American slang is used in pockets because American pop culture is everywhere. Same with people using Nigerian slang in South Africa. It has been adopted. Of course not everyone is like this but it's not uncommon to use American slang mixed with South Africa slang. It may sound weird to you being American but it's not an act that is just how it is. We can't deny how much we are influenced by the US. The show is an extreme version though. Annie is 100% Nigerian and I think the show could do with more authentically African celebs. The Real Housewives of Abuja, Lagos and Nairobi do a better job at authentically African content.

Great review 👏🏼👏🏼💕 As a South African you are spot on with EVERYTHING. First of all when I saw the guys going to play basket ball our whole household sat up its not a common sport we don’t have basketball courts just randomly in our communities. Now soccer yes that’s our game especially within the black and brown communities. It was disappointing to see that they missed opportunity to teach about true African culture. Annie was the only one I truly connected too

I’m dying 😂😂😂 I was thinking the same thing about Fantana. I’m Jamaican and yes African listen to a lot of dancehall so I was excited and was waiting to see what she got. But it’s a NO, how can u not whine for a dancehall artist. I wish we heard the music. Everything is manufactured caz Zari was dating her now husband last season. I was watching another channel and all the Africans called in giving all the info.

The Zari thing is one thing i give African men ratings for. They don't play about the respect for their child's mothers. Even Andile has a respectful relationship with both his exes.

Funky you're the first one to analyse Bonang and how she fit in the show so well. This was my FAVOURITE review. She's too big for the show. They only way I can see her fitting on the show is if they cut back on the pre-produced pieces - and had different production teams following the the cast members in the countries they live & work in. Show us how things are working out with Khanyi's teenage daughter living in her own apartment and what she's doing in Dubai for example. But that would probably be too expensive because it looks like they're working on a tight budget.

It was him giving Kali the key for me! Fantana and them teeth 🦷 and her being so thirsty! Definitely the wigs! I side eyed Diamond after this season. Louie is a sweetheart and I hate the way they played him. Annie and Swanky beef got on my nerves because I thought they were better than that. Adele life was interesting and I look forward to seeing more of his life coparenting. It was a lot to unpack but I enjoyed it! Great review by the way!!!

Thank you for providing a perspective from an American. I completely agree that the show missed the mark and opportunities to educate. Unfortunately South Africa is very much influenced by Western culture. Apartheid indoctrinated us to think our africaness is ugly and white is beautiful. We are also a very young democracy and still have a LONG way to go.

Yes and I think this show was a bad look for her. I thought she was going to be the mature, level headed person in the group. Instead she came off quite shallow and attention seeking. Although I think some liquor got the best of her my opinion of her has changed lol.
