When Young Frankenstein came out, Aerosmith were making an album in NYC. They took a break from recording and went out to watch it. They were all high and busted out laughing when Igor did the “walk this way” bit. Steven Tyler was so inspired he wrote their biggest hit Walk This Way.

They got Gene hackman to play the blindman for free because he wanted to try out comedy. His last line was ad-libbed and the crew had to cut early due to laughing too hard. Apparently the whole Igor's shifting hump was also a gag from the actor that was later put in the script after the actors had noticed he was doing it.

gene hackman and wilder met each other while filming "bonnie and clyde" in 1967. (another must see film.) they remained friends and hackman actually asked wilder for the part of the blind man in this film, which wilder wrote. kenneth mars, the police inspector, played the nazi playwrite in brooks' 1968 "the producers." he appeared in several mel brooks films. no one but me ever seems to notice how mars, as the inspector in this film, used the wrong arm, the left one, as the mechanical arm in the towns people's search scene towards the end of the film.

This is a very special movie for my family. My grandfather loved all the old monster movies but he had never seen this. We told him to watch it and he did. He loved it we were told by my grandma. And he went to sleep that night and never woke up again. He was 75. This was 1997. What a way to go.

Marty Feldman (Igor) moved the hump from one side to the other throughout filming as a prank until they noticed and added it to the script. Gene insisted that Mel not have any parts in the picture (it was his original idea and he wrote most of it with Mel only doing some rewrites). So Mel made off-camera appearances as the howling wolf, Frederick's grandfather, and the shrieking cat. The Inspector's wooden arm is a reference to a character from the original movies that got his arm ripped off by the monster.

And some more: Gene Hackman ad-libbed "I was going to make espresso" The guy running into the tree was accidental and they kept it. The "warm milk" and "Ovaltine" gag was also improvised. "No tongues" also an ad-lib. Peter Boyle came up with the idea for the mangled vocalization of "Puuutin on the Riiits". Gene Wilder only agreed to be in the film if Mel Brooks was not, he felt that as soon as the audience saw Mel the illusion would be gone.

So glad you guys liked this one! One of the all-time comedy classics! Fun fact: the devices and equipment used in the lab were from the original "Frankenstein." Mel said that was the only time him and Gene ever got in an argument, and it was a serious one. He said they screamed at each other for 45 minutes over that scene. Mel originally hated the idea, vehemently. They yelled for nearly an hour at which point Mel suddenly said "Okay, it's in." When Gene asked him why he suddenly conceded like that, Mel said "Because it obviously means a lot to you and I trust your judgement."

I once went with my 80-something year-old father to a vascular surgeon to see if they could get better circulation in his legs, and the doctor told him to 'hop up' on the exam table. As you can imagine and old man with a walker, he struggled, and I said "nice.....hopping" and the doc could barely contain himself. It was just the right thing to say at that moment. It is one of my memories of him that I will always be with me. Can't tell you how many times I saw this fine work of art. This was also one of the few movies that Mel Brooks does not have a cameo role in. Of all his movies, I think this has the most one-liners that I still use to this day. Terri Garr was in Mr Mom and Tootsie, to name a couple. Too hard to pick out a favorite line, but to name a few...Walk this way, There wolf, there castle, Put the candle back, A little paint, a few flowers, a couple of throw pillows, Could be worse - it could be raining, Brandy warm milk Ovaltine

While filming "Blazing Saddles" , Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder had a conversation about an idea Gene had for a movie. He told Mel it would be about the grandson of Victor Frankenstein (who famously pronounces the last name as Fronk-un-schteen because he’s embarrassed of his family’s legacy). He finds out that he’s inherited the family castle and needs to go claim it. When doing so, he finds his grandfather’s books and decides that bringing a monster to life isn’t such a bad thing after all. Brooks loved the idea and wanted to work on it. Wilder responded that he could on one condition-he couldn’t be in it. “I said, ‘Am I such a bad actor?’’ says Brooks. “He said, ‘No, but you’re always breaking the fourth wall, and you’re always surprising, and there’s a lot of anarchy in you. I don’t want it to be a crazy comedy. I want it to be a real movie with natural comedy,’” says Brooks. “I said, ‘You’re absolutely right. That’s the way we’ll do it.’”

There was a terrible short lived comedy called "Struck by Lightning" on CBS that was about a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein who inherits the castle (which is struggling to survive financially as a hotel) and the caretaker (played by Jack Elam) who is actually Frankenstein's monster. The only joke in the series that I laughed at was when the descendant sees that the monster is afraid of fire and asks "You're afraid of fire?" The monster says "You would be too if you had been chased by a mob of angry villagers with pitchforks and torches!" Then the descendant asks "When did THAT happen?" and the monster replies "When DIDN'T it happen?"

They did a great job with some of the scenes, like the Little Girl was throwing flowers in the water, so the monster put her in the water because he thought pretty things belong into the water. That's why it was such a big thing, and the thunder and lightning was big in the scene, and the Frankenstein said "IT'S ALIVE!" like that. Also Madeline Khan was literally transformed into the Bride of Frankestein, with the exact hairstyle after her um...encounter with the monster. Bride of Frankenstein was a sequel to Frankenstein though.

Teri Garr never gets the credit she deserves for this film. Yes she played Phoebe's mom on "Friends" but was also in "Mr. Mom", "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind", "Tootsie", "Oh, God!" and the Original Star Trek episode with Gary 7 (an attempted spin-off).

Transylvania is a real place in the Romanian countryside. It is a small peaceful village. Dracula was based on a Romanian ruler named Vlad Tepist. I may have spelled his name wrong. He got the nickname Vlad The Impaler because he would impale his enemies on stakes.

Fun(?) facts: There were several callbacks to the original Frankenstein movies. For example, Madeline Kahn's bouffant hairdo is from "Bride of Frankenstein." Also, in the original Frankenstein from 1931 the Monster throws the little girl into the lake. Before there was Monty Python, Marty Feldman performed with John Cleese and Graham Chapman in a 1948 sketch entitled "The Four Yorkshiremen."

Gene Wilder & Gene Hackman were also both in the 1967 landmark movie ''Bonnie & Clyde''. Madeline Kahn & Cloris Leachman are both my favorite comedy actresses, Cloris is also hilarious in another Mel Brooks movie ''High Anxiety'' (a Hitchcock parody), which also stars the great and gorgeous Madeline Kahn. Teri Garr has btw an amazing filmography, first appearing in Elvis Presley movies in the early 60s and from then on in so many tv shows and classic movies.

If you like this, try "History of the World, Part 1" and "Life Stinks" by Mel Brooks. Also, "Love at First Bite" and "Murder By Death" are two more classic comedies. "Silver Streak", with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor is another great movie, both funny and suspenseful.

This is my favorite comedy. One thing I love about it is that it references "Son of Frankenstein" along with the other main Universal Frankenstein classics I grew up watching on TV. "Son of Frankenstein" was my favorite as a kid. While the continuity doesn't really work, Gene's character is basically the grandson character from SoF and the kid coincidentally had light curly hair very similar to Gene's. By the way, the Taffeta joke isn't that he thought that was her name, but that he thought it was a romantic word and repeated it back to her as if he knew what it meant.

I’d highly recommend reacting to Mel Brooks’ first film, THE PRODUCERS (1967), which is the movie that really made Gene Wilder a star. It’s my personal favorite of Brooks’ films, but unlike the later films, it’s an original story, rather than a spoof.

THE BEST homage to all the early original Frankenstein flicks from the thirties, and best parody, as well. Young Terri Garr was all of 21, and virtually an amateur to film when selected to play Inge. She was an A List star after the premier. "Pardon me boy, is this the Transylvania Station?" (ja ja, track tventy-nine!)is a parody on the song Chattanooga Choo Choo, sung by The Andrews Sisters. Gene Hackman used to play tennis with Gene Wilder, and when he learned of this film he begged to be in it. Supposedly, he offered to do it for free, but SAG rules wouldn't allow it, and he reportedly did it for scale (minimum). He thought the shoot would be quick, but he spent 10 days in makeup for that short cameo. They had so much fun making this, cast sometimes came in when they were scheduled off just to watch the magic. Inspector Kemp is based on the Inspector Krogh in Son of Frankenstein (1939) who had his arm ripped off by the Monster. Transylvania is historically between the Carpathian Mountains and Apuseni range (S.E. Rumania to Hungarian border). Elizabeth's hair and entire costume mimicked The Bride of Frankenstein perfectly - she even got the HIISSSSS right!

Young Frankenstein parodies the first four Frankenstein films: Frankenstein (1931), Bride Of Frankenstein (1935), Son Of Frankenstein (1939) and Ghost of Frankenstein (1942). Briefly the original 1931 film is reflected in the overall premise, the use of the original Kenneth Strickfaden lab equipment found in his garage (the equipment, not Kenneth!), and the ALIVE scene. In the original the doctor says "Alive Alive It's ALIVE. In the name of God now I know what it feels like to BE God!" which, along with the girl with the flowers scene, was censored after the original first aired and restored later. Bride of Frankenstein gave us Madeline Kahn's slivery hairdo, her hiss, the blind hermit (Gene Hackman) and the emphasis on the creature's love of music. At the blind hermit's cabin in Bride the monster actually extends his thumb the way they showed it here. Son of Frankenstein introduced Ygor (played by Bela Lugosi) who also played a horn like the one shown, often from atop the castle. It also gave us Inspector Kemp with the wooden arm. In Son Of the inspector was Krough and reveled his arm was torn out by the creature. There was also a dart game between them. In Ghost of Frankenstein Ygor is again present and connived his way into getting a transference of his intellect into the creature's body in a scene very similar to scene in Young Frankenstein where Frederick transfers some of this intellect to the creature. More similarities exist but this is way too long as it is! Nice job!!!

You need to realize that back in 1974 the Universal Monster movies played on television ALL the time. Every weekend all across the country it was common to be able to see Monster movies on television. Teenagers were especially target audiences for these classic pictures at that time. So, the three movies that Young Frankenstein references: FRANKENSTEIN ( 1931 ), BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN ( 1935 ) and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN ( 1939 ) were all well known and comprehended. These 3 movies were Universal Studios films and couldn't be directly credited because YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ( 1974 ) was made by Twentieth Century Fox. Only the novel by Mary W. Shelley is credited but audiences knew that it was an homage to the Universal films ( even going so far to present it in Black & White ) The classic Kenneth Strickfadden machinery that appeared in all those old classics was even used in YF! And also - understand that THIS was Gene Wilder's movie. He wrote it and conceived the idea for it. Then he asked his friend, Mel Brooks, to direct it!

Confirmed, Terri Garr did play Phoebe's mom. She's appeared in many films and TV shows, notably Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Tootsie, and an episode of the original Star Trek series. Marty Feldman was well-known in UK comedy in the '60s, in with the likes of Monty Python, Peter Sellers, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Gene Hackman, of course, has been in everything. The laboratory equipment props are the actual working props from the original 1931 Frankenstein movie. Mel Brooks played the cat.

Here are a few tidbits you may not know: 1.) Gene Wilder actually wrote the screenplay for this movie, and had shared it with Mel while they were filming "Blazing Saddles". 2.) Mel Brooks isn't actually in this movie because it was pretty much the only way that Gene Wilder would allow him to direct the movie - Gene did not want it to become "another Mel Brooks movie." 3.) Yes, Marty Feldman's eyes were like that. 4.) Gene Hackman was a last-minute addition to the cast, as he had been visiting Gene Wilder on the set and had casually mentioned that he wished he could be in the movie - so that scene was whipped together.

33:54 That hiss she did was a reference to the original "Bride of Frankenstein" movie. The newly created Bride did that animalistic hiss towards the creature, which was inspired by the actress, Elsa Lanchester, watching swans hiss like that when they felt threatened.
