As i mentioned before, there are similarities between the Old West cowboys and knights of the Middle Ages. I would also add the warriors of late antiquity who would evolve into knights. A knight who was actually a member of his lord's entourage was given food, shelter etc. and was expected to act as a bodyguard, among other things. If the lord was killed, peace could be bought if the killer paid "blood price" to the victim's heir. If the killer refused to pay, then the vassal was honour bound to avenge the lord's death. There is an infamous example in a poem called the Fight (or Slaughter) at Finnsbourgh which is based on a true story from the fifth century. A man named Hengist pretended to take service with Finn, (a Friesian in what is now the Netherlands) the man who killed his lord, only to engineer an ambush that killed Finn and all of his body guards. There are other examples as well. I guess my point is the same patterns reoccur in similar situations.

You're right. There is more than similarities between old west cowboys and Knights. The cowboys were reading Ivanhoe. They patterned themselves on the Knights. Historians have described a cowboy's loyalty to their ranches as feudalistic. Doolin, Murphy, and Tunstall were all recent immigrants to the US. I don't think they fully realized what forces they were messing with. Killing a rancher in front of his cowboys was insane. Cowboys didn't have the concept of blood price. 49 Ronin from Japan also follows the same pattern. Lesson - don't mess with the wrong people.

@@ArchitecturalOutcast Yes, I am familiar with the Japanese story. My sister ( now deceased) was a big fan of Japanese film. I saw an adaptation called Chushingura, which is a very good film, although I don't know how accurate it is.
