During the summer months of 2005, free agent Michael Redd received sizable contract offers from both the Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers. Drafted 43rd overall in 2000, Redd spent the first 5 years of his career in Milwaukee, tutored early by the likes of Ray Allen, Glenn Robinson and Sam Cassell. He’d improved greatly since his arrival, increasing his per game averages in minutes, shot attempts, and points in each of those 5 campaigns. Following an All-Star nod and All-NBA 3rd Team selection in 2003-04, Redd averaged 23.0 ppg on 44-36-85 (%) in 2004-05.
A coveted sharpshooter on the free agent market, the Cavaliers offered “Redd-hot” a 5-year deal worth $70 million. While signing with the Wine and Gold meant playing alongside 20-year-old superstar LeBron James, much would be left behind in Milwaukee. Not only did the Bucks exceed Cleveland’s offer with a 6-year/$91 million proposal of their own, but the organization presented Michael with an opportunity to be the franchise player. Days after choosing to re-sign with the team that drafted him, Kevin Poston, his agent, told The Associated Press, “Money is important, obviously, but there were other factors involved. Michael is really comfortable in Milwaukee and the Bucks gave him a shot to make it in this league. And they obviously showed that they want to keep him around for years to come.” (www.espn.com/nba/news/story?i...)
In a 2020 interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson and Sean Deveney of Heavy.com’s “Heavy Live With Scoop B Show,” Redd gave further insight on his decision to sign with the Bucks:
“I took a visit to Cleveland and met with the organization. My heart was in Milwaukee because that was the team that kind of, groomed me and you know, there was a loyalty that we as players had to our organizations back then. Different than now; they groomed me, they believed in me and that meant a lot to me throughout my career and so the decision to sign back with Milwaukee to me at the end of the day, it made sense because of my loyalty factor; and back then, if you didn’t win a championship you still weren’t - it didn’t affect your legacy as far as how good you were. So if we didn’t win a championship…I’d rather go down with the ship rather than join Kobe, join LeBron, Tracy McGrady or Vince Carter.” (kingjamesgospel.com/2020/11/2...)
