Agreed . I remember when I was about 12 and a piper would play somewhere in the neighborhood . Whatever I was doing at the time I would always stop and listen while shivers would run down my spine . I never knew where the guy played but it was just far enough away that the sound seemed to just drift . I wish I could play but unfortunately I am not a musical guy . And bravo to the three in the video . They did an awesome job .

Wow, crazy lung capacity. I think that'd be my largest challenge playing this instrument
@justinnaramor60502 жыл бұрын
Well you only really need enough lung capacity to fill the bag with air; it's not entirely unlike blowing up a balloon. That's how bagpipes actually work; bagpipes are not like a saxophone or something like that, where the air from your mouth/lungs is what causes the instrument to make sound. Instead, bagpipes use a bag that's inflated with air; this is where the "bag" part of the word "bagpipes" comes in. This air is then transferred to the pipes when you use your arm to squeeze the bag; that air from the bag going to the pipes is what makes the sound. The only time you use air from your mouth/lungs while playing is when the bag needs to be re-inflated constantly to keep the sound sustaining, like what you heard in this recording. Squeezing the bag and therefore transferring its air over to the pipes obviously means the bag is getting deflated, and that deflation happens quite fast. Eventually the pipes will then lose all their air, which means no more music. So to avoid this and to keep the music constantly sustaining like that, the bag has to be frequently re-inflated, and this is where the lungs/mouth come in. So it's not really the lung capacity of the player that allows the sound to sustain like that, as it's more a matter of being able to keep the bag inflated enough so that the pipes are constantly getting the amount of air they need in order to make that sustaining sound.
