Film, TV and Radio Star Steve Coogan in his early 20's on Pebble Mill at One with Alan Titchmarsh, demonstrating the impersonation skills which kick-started his career.
This may be the earliest TV interview with the man who went on to bring us a cavalcade of comedy characters over the past 30 years, and who has developed his acting skills to become a leading actor on British Television with his film Philomena and his portrayal of Jimmy Savile in The Reckoning.
Broadcast in March 1990.

Fascinating clip - you can see EXACTLY where the inspiration for the Radio Episode of 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' featuring Alan interviewing the impressionist comes from, two years later - it's uncanny! Thanks for uploading this great little slice of history. 👍

Even at this young age you could see his talent in abundance. Easily this countries best ever impressionist back then and still today and all of his comic characters are superb too 😉

Amazing to think Partridge 1st appearance was within 1 year of this.

Amazing to think over thirty year later he’d still be living off of his Alan Partridge character.

Funny comment from Titchmarsh at the end there. 'Nice to see you at the top of your career'? He's gone a bit further than Pebble Mill over the years!

Coogan deserves a lot a credit. He's probably the only English comedian who can do a truly convincing Irish accent.

He spent a lot of summer in Mayo in the west of Ireland. His Mayo accent is incredible even to Irish people!

I’m glad he’s getting chance to do some great acting work now, his eye for detail and subtle body language bring a lot to challenging roles. Stan Laurel and Saville are brilliantly portrayed. His discipline in acting is what underpins Partridge, along with choosing excellent writers and supporting staff. I can’t think of a thing he’s done that I haven’t enjoyed.

He seems very composed, self assured and is quite brilliant at the impressions. I wonder why he can't do Richard Burton?

I think most impressionists can't do certain voices/accents. You go with the ones your vocal cords and mind can copy. Coogan's range is very broad.

Probably just feels he doesn’t have the voice for it. Very few could do Burton.
