That video is actually from the first lesson he had with Butch. Claude Harmon 3rd on the camera. He mentioned this in an interview/podcast a few years ago. I think this was the very next day after he lost in the second round of the US Amateur to Paul Page of England at Champions Golf Club Houston TX.

We will never know what Tiger would have achieved with his "original" swing, but it's fun to speculate. Interesting analysis.

Prolly wood haz 60 to 70 majors in his trophy case. Teachers cost him his destiny. And he knows it.

I'm sure his career win % would've been very similar but he still would've needed to work very hard to master this swing. The grip and sway can produce major misses both ways if not timed properly and it's not like they had all the data collecting devices and cameras we have now to exactly pinpoint what fixes he should be applying. The real question is would this swing help mitigate his injuries. Maybe, Tiger already had minor knee and elbow surgery when he was young and his obsession with military training after his dad passed away really stressed his body. Would he have still done that training? idk We should be thankful though that we have footage of all of Tiger's different swings to teach from and try to copy for future generations

Tiger is a phenomenon, he did something most pros will never do by having 5-6 different swings in his career 1. Amateur swing 2. Butch swing 3. Haney Swing 4. Foley swing 5. Como/Himself after his back fusion 6. Newest swing after his car crash which I don't fully count cause he won't play competition with it He obviously changed his swing each time looking for some sort of improvement (distance control, a go to shot, etc) and each time got very close to mastering those swings. I'm not sure how much he would've won if he stayed with 1-2 swings changes throughout his whole career and avoided injuries/never bulked up but it still would've been a lot considering the win totals he put up with the swing variations I stated above. P.S. I love his 2018 swing and just the smoothness of his driver swing that year and how biomechanically sound it was to avoid injury

Great comment. How many majors would Tiger have won with only the Butch swing? :) I say 25.

The X factor modern swing produces massive speed and power but stresses the body, especially the spine to the point that injury is inevitable. Old timers lifted their left heel and rotated their hips more to reduce this stress.

This is a swingers swing and not a hitters swing. He is not holding shaft flex here through impact. Has to time the flex which is inconsistent. He changed to get maximum compression. IE Shorter flatter swing which eventually allowed him to get shallower while being able to exit left keeping the clubface square to target line as long a possible. This allowed him to go into a weaker left hand grip that gave him the ability to consistently work the ball both ways into greens with tucked pins that are showcased on the PGA Tour. He had to get stronger and heavier to be able to perform this technique. This all allowed him to utilize the orbit pull that all the greatest ball strikers performed that allowed the clubface to stay pointed to the target line as long as possible. The orbit pull gives incredible feel in the hands through and out of the delivery zone which allows for maximum workability of the golf ball. Tiger played his best golf this way. The miss was a pull cut. He hooked his way in and cut his way out. The teaching now is to rotate out of the way to deliver the throw. Tiger pulled across left from an inside approach with a late rotation in the 2000s. This really doesn't put a strain on the body but you have to be strong and heavy to execute this move. He got hurt from overworking his body day in and day out causing muscle fatigue. He only sleeps 4-6 hours a day. This catches up to you. So he ended up getting really jacked to keep himself going. Would Tiger have been better off sticking to his young swing? How many majors does Love III have? Tiger had to fit his body into a hitters swing to become the multi dimensional ball striker he became. This is what gave him the ability to rise above the field and dominate. But it came at a price of injury fitting his body type into a winning hitters swing. Would he have won all those titles with a swingers swing? Absolutely not. Tiger knows this. He would of been better off not trying the rotational get out of the way handle dragging throwing technique after Haney.

Moe, Hogan, Norman, Palmer, Knudson, Jack all were very strong hitters of the ball golf. The sound off the face was different. Explosive. They accelerated through the ball and held the flex of the shaft creating maximum stability of the clubface. Maximum feel in the hands.

@MichaelShinosky

@@coeenc123 Swingers let the club do the work. Hitters power the club with their body. Swingers tend to have a more flexible shaft while hitters use as stiff a flex as possible.

Tiger should have stayed with Butch. That's when he destroyed the field in majors. Stance and backswing looked more like Davis Love III.

So, not remembering time lines did he change because of injury, or did he get injured because of swing changes...?

He changed to improve his accuracy. And consistency. I’ve seen him talk about this in multiple interviews
@TMar1961

@@FarnzworthIII When you say that take into context he is talking about a 1% increase in accuracy and consistency; it wasn't necessary in reality and the changes lead to a body damaging golf swing that had to be changed again, and then again due to injury (not talking about present day injury). Sometimes it's best to leave good enough alone.

I agree. I often wondered why he deciced to change his swing. He obliterated the field before he decided to change it. Cost him tournament wins and some majors I think. Maybe it was ego or his desire for perfection or a combination of both.

All for less speed, less accuracy, and more injury. Swing gurus have ruined many others. Michelle Wie would be a good example also.
