First of all it's not a reformed Church is a reform synagogue and it is basically a type of Jewish house of worship that literally doesn't really follow any of the religious laws as a general rule, because some of those laws would not allow for some of the things that reform Judaism allows. Most Orthodox considered reform Judaism One step before keeping nothing at all, while ultra-orthodox consider it one step above becoming a Jew for j. Is somebody made the comment here that the whole issue of the ritual by which a widow must marry her brother-in-law her husband's brother as being weird actually when you consider that way back when before women even have the vote and in some states like New York didn't allow for married women to own property I mean they could inherit the property but only if there was no will generally they were considered the property of their husbands or fathers and this ritual allowed for them the widow and the brother-in-law to basically not have to marrywhere the movie gets most of it wrong is if he spits if she spits into the shoe or he spits in his generally he who does the spinning he agrees that they should not Mary for the sake of raising children for his brother what that means is literally the children would be considered the children of his dead brother i e it's to raise his brother's name and so it shouldn't be forgotten they would not have been living together unless they chose to go through with being married to each other and that would have been done immediately there is no 3-month period and then the spitting of the shoe there's none of that, so whoever wrote this movie gets quite a few things wrong, but that's not surprising. Basically what the ritual does is it allows her to marry anyone she wants after that but anyone who is not a Cohen IE from the priestly group if the person is a levy he can marry her but if he is a Cohen from Aaron's family and I mean the brother of Moses by the way if you know your Bible then know they would not be allowed to marry, this is because the situation where they spit into the shoe is the equivalent of a divorce and a Cohen cannot marry a divorcee or a widow who has been not claimed by her brother-in-law so to speak, and has undergone the ritual above. Like I said it's usually done immediately after the week of morning and as soon as the two of them decide that this is not going to happen I.E not going to marry one another the ritual is performed. There have been some instances and I mentioned this because like I said there is some things that unfortunately you can't get to rabbis Orthodox rabbis into a room where they can agree on anything without them arguing about things, okay I'm exaggerating here, probably because I know a great deal as the daughter of a rabbi and a judge a religious judge who is now no longer around I used to be my father's study partner, when I was a lot younger, I remember asking him why is it that Israel which basically drafts anyone and everyone practically cannot have a conditional divorce available for I mean they have examples of it so there's no reason they could not have that a part of every marriage allowing for their not to be the whole issue of giving of a get and dies being able to blackmail their wives into not being able to get a divorce, my father said that a lot of the rabbis in Israel can agree on anything,it took me coming here and asking some very interesting questions and then wondering how I know so much and where I got my knowledge from because most Jewish women were not and are not especially in the Orthodox World trained or taught as I was trained and taught which was more like the son and not a daughter, the answer I finally got from at least two out of a half dozen that I asked was because they don't want to make it possible for quickie marriages and quickie divorce they don't want to be like Las Vegas. I still think that is not a very good answer for this question I think it's the kind of answer you give somebody when you don't really want to tell the truth. But I have found more than one or two loopholes for others in the problem of getting a divorce I found loopholes in their marriage agreements and ways that they could challenge for divorce and get it on the grounds that the marriage was never legal by Jewish standards but I was told that most of those people would take that except for one who did decide that if push came to shove she was going to use one of my suggestions because of flaws I found in her marriage and marriage agreement, I used to teach young women who are about to get married that they should get a prenup Jewish contracts for marriage are literally as old as Judaism and you can put anything you want in that marriage contract provided you take it seriously provided that when it is witnessed your witnesses are also taking it seriously, the funniest thing is when I've explained the legal ramifications of Jewish law and explain why a prenup is very important before agreeing to sign the marriage contract and that the prenup should be stated in the marriage contract the amount of young women who have not wanted a prenup which would allow them for an unconditional get because it would say that he you know you can have anything written in a prenup including the fact that should you want a divorce he agrees to give you a divorce without any strings attached, and anything that you got within the marriage you have decided will be divided equally by a third party and by the parties involved so that there isn't any contention. It's these young women who decides not to do it who think the whole idea of a prenup it defeats their idea of what marriage should be, and it's probably the same young women who wants their matrons decide that the whole idea of a conditional divorce should never exist because let's face it it would defeat the purpose of getting married in the first place and make us just like everybody else in the world... There'd be no Romance... Jewish law and Jewish marriage are not about romance they are about two people who are going to spend their whole lives together and if you're going to spend your whole life with somebody you have to make sure that the two of you have the same goals and you share the same ideas and that you are friends above everything else romance doesn't come into it until much later on after the marriage... That is how it is among the Orthodox if it sounds very Vulcan in the sense that it's very logical very without the romance you could say that but it builds better marriages from what I've seen. This will say that I edited I did not edit I cannot fix anything I am using voice to text because I do not have the entire use of my hands, I wanted to add above that this ritual only occurs if the woman in question had no children she had a daughter the ritual is not done if her child dies after her husband then this ritual is not performed it is only performed if the couple were childless or if the widow lost her and her husband's only child before the death of her husband.
