I'm glad I stumbled on to the video I haven't seen a Zebco cardinal 4 for years, I bought one around 1975 And haven't seen any for years.I was 15 then now I'm 63 , the main reason I Got that reel was the drag nob on the bottom . I'd like to find another one day , That was one my favorite Reels . I've got a whole bunch of Mitchell reels but l still miss my cardinal 4 the most. Thanks from NOR-CAL.

Absolutely the best reel ever made. I have 30 of them. I also have 7 of Abu Garcia Cardinal 4x's. I started fishing with them when I was a teenager. Now I'm 55 and the only other spinning reels I have are the mid 50's and 60's Mitchell 300's. I've rebuilt many of them. And I would agree the drag system was the hardest part to figure out on the 1st rebuild I did. Great video.

Bill, I’m glad you liked the video. With that many Cardinal 4s I’d think you should know them top to bottom, and front to back. Do you have any tips for us that might make it easier to service?

@@youngmartinsreels5314 yes I know them like the back of my hand. Your Video was right on the money as to how things are done. You did a great job.

I remember that Cardinal 4. It was a lot of fun figuring it out. I’m glad you found it useful.

Justin, I would too. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the opportunity to get my hands on any Cardinals but the 4.

That reel really was a beast to put back together! I'll stick with my old mitchell spinning reels and old zebco spincasters. Thank you for making this video though. I look forward to more service videos.

The assembly wasn’t really that bad. The hard part was figuring out how it came apart without breaking it.

Rick, I do a few things differently for instance I put the bail and springs on the rotor while it is off the reel. I just find that simpler for me. The bail springs on a 6 and 7 are identical except for being right and left side so you have to be careful. You did the drag beautifully though! I also had a hard time with that the first time. As I said I hate c-clips particularly with my vision limitations. A lot of folks don’t like these reels and I started out that way. So many folks seemed to be paying high prices for them I just wanted to know why. Well now I have 6 of them so you can see how much I like them now. Someday I hope you get to service an Abu Garcia Center Drag spinning Reel. It’s the only reel I have that I would liken to the challenge of these Cardinal reels. I only have one but I like it a lot! It is the closest reel I’ll ever have that is similar to the famous Abu Garcia Suveran spinning reel which many consider to be the finest spinning reel ever made. - Chris

Hey Rick. Best wishes to you from Manitoba Canada. I have the Cardinal 6 of the same vintage. I enjoyed watching these videos . I have a guy that cleans and services my reels so I won't be trying this myself but it's interesting to see how everything fits together. I am going to get around to watching all of your videos as time permits. I would like to say that I appreciate the fact that you don't holler or play loud music .

Hey, I’m glad you like the videos. For the most part I’m trying to rebuild reels nobody else is doing. I had a lot of fun with the Cardinal. The guy that’s really good is Dennis over at 2nd Chance Tackle. I learned most of my skills watching his videos and transitioning the info to other reels. It’s good to know my efforts aren’t being wasted.

I’m sorry, I don’t know the sizes and I no longer have the reel to take apart to see.

You guess a lot. Keep your day job.

Of course I guess a lot. I’m taking apart a reel I’ve never seen before. Heck I’m lucky I could get it back together correctly. That being said, I took an unserviceable reel and got it ready to go fishing again. Fortunately, I no longer need a day job and I can do these for free. Peace Out!
