I can let you into a little bit of info. Both products are actually made by Youngs as I've seen the outer cartons of the Iceland cod fillets as they've restocked the freezers and on the outer cartons of the Iceland cod fillets it clearly states that the cod fillets are produced by Youngs for Iceland. So, basically they're the same fillet just with a different recipe batter and an own brand box.

@@BaldFoodieGuy2 years late with this comment but only recently started watching and have subscribed to your channel. My wife is allergic to sunflower seeds, proper anaphylactic reaction not just an intolerence. This allergy includes sunflower lecithin. She couldn't eat the Iceland battered fish. The Youngs' batter doesn't contain any lecithins so isn't a problem. Sunflower oil doesn't trigger a reaction however.

I get the Morrisons version which is £2.99... the batter is super crisp, and it has 65% cod (13% more than the Iceland). 17 minutes at 180c in the air fryer. It's also fillet, not formed cod, so it's amazingly good value and quality!

Good review Gareth, Thanks, To be honest Ive tried all the makes of fish portions, Youngs , Birdseye , icelands , etc with different batter , beer batter , bread crumbs etc . Youngs has palm oil. I expect if you questioned them,they would say it was sustainably sourced palm oil but Iceland have managed to do without it.
@michaelcampin1464

Why use palm oil to make batter? Ive only ever used milk and flour and eggs and maybe a touch of baking powder. But i do prefer to use beef dripping to deep fry the battered fish in.

It's difficult to get 'proper' battered fish these days in Supermarkets. Even a lot of chicken products are 'formed' meat. Check out the ingredients. So many other things are added. Sometimes just to bulk it out (water for instance). The only place to get a nice battered fish fillet is at the fish shop. More expensive but at least it isn't this re-formed stuff. I do agree about the batter. It makes a lot of difference but I would probably just buy what was value for money. Iceland's for me I think.

You're never going to get chippy style fish from a box. If you want something even remotely comparable you need to be buying fish fillets and then battering them yourself and deep fry it.

There is a brilliant Iceland Food Warehouse near to where I live and for a year or so now, I have been choosing Iceland's own brand chicken, fish and burgers over all the other brands. I have absolutely no complaints. Iceland's own branded foods are always cheaper, generally weigh more and, in my opinion, every bit as good as the more expensive equivalent.

That is interesting. I haven't shopped in Iceland and I thought it was nearly impossible in this day and age of rampant inflation to get good quality fish so cheap. Having seen this video and your comments, I am converted and will visit Iceland. I certainly won't pay a greedy owner of a fish and chip shop a tenner for a regular portion of cod. Those guys are laughing at us. It's pure extortion, not to mention approx. 3.50 for a portion of fries. Those guys are killing our institution of a fish and chip shop through outright greed.

I've found that the cheaper fillets tend to have a batter that can be a little softer in the middle, what helps is brushing with oil - both sides and turning over twice during air fryer cooking. Air fryers are a godsend, save half the cooking time, easy to clean & for 1 or 2 people a real saving in fuel cost, you'll end up loving yours - Cheers!

That's a great video, and that gives you an idea how we are being exploited by fish and chip shops when they are charging up to a tenner for a reguklar sized cod. Yes maybe you get more actual fish from your local chippie, but you paid roughly 75p for a battered cod fillet plus a few pennies cooking it. I reckon it's time we all boycotted fish and chip shops to force them to bring their prices down. What they are charging is extortion and it has to stop. Thankfully us as consumers can do something about it. Thanks once again for your video.

The price difference is quite significant, the Iceland ones work out at £6.00/Kg whereas the Young's are £9.38/Kg. It needs to be remembered when cooking these that each of the fillets are a different weight, Young's are 100g each but the Iceland are 125g each so really need cooking for longer. That would no doubt improve the batter of the Iceland fillets. They are both made from fish "trimmings" so really just fish cakes without the potato! Keep up the good work.

Yes, the keyword to look for is "formed". This means it's not a single fillet, but various bits and pieces. Even the Birds Eye brand is like this. Which is why I prefer to buy proper, raw cod fillets from Aldi or Lidl and pan-fry them. Season one fillet both sides, then dust lightly with flour (no egg) and fry each side in medium hot sunflower oil for 1½ to 2 minutes, depending on thickness. Add a small knob of butter to the oil to help browning.

I am a big fan of Young's battered cod. That batter is so tasty. Obviously, it's not on par with the what you'd get from a chippy, but it's good enough. The fish always tastes fresh. Sometimes with frozen fish it can taste a bit "tired", shall we say?! I've never needed to disguise the taste of Youngs with mountains of tartar sauce. I wouldn't buy any other frozen fish. Also Young's Battered Alaskan Pollock is very tasty.

I'd definitely go for the Iceland. I like Youngs but by the time you get salt and viniger or a bit of gravy on it or tomato sauce, you won't know the difference.

Great review I didn't realise that they were both formed I thought that the more expensive one would have been a fish fillet interesting. I guess if you want a fillet you either batter you own fillet or go to a fish and chip shop.

G'day Gareth. Hmmm 🤔 I purchase this type of battered or crumbed fish and find it difficult to decipher the tastes of the fish and the batter. The batter can be flavour dominant in one brand and weak in another but really no fish flavours at all. The more you put on them like lemon, vinegar, tartare and seafood sauces, the less the taste of the fish. But saying that, a fish, cheese, lettuce and mayo butty / burger is damned hard to beat. Sometimes you have to pay a little extra for better. The Young's did look the better here today. A good review of these two. Cheers mate. 👍🤤😀🇦🇺

When it comes to oven cooked fish I've found myself preferring breaded. It's much lighter and cooks better. Less grease and fat coming out of it. Then just goto the chippy now and then for a proper battered fish.
