As a math teacher, one difficulty I encountered with Microsoft’s apps was creating and editing equations. Because of this, I leave the more complex edits to be done on my Windows PC. Even so, the Pages app has been a pleasant surprise, as I can create and edit equations using LaTeX in it.

I’ve been using an iPad for 1.5 years, and currently, I have the latest iPad Air from 2024. I must admit, I use it for work. Often, instead of turning on my Mac, I connect the iPad to a monitor and work comfortably thanks to Stage Manager. The iPad can do a lot; I can accomplish 90% of my work on it. For certain tasks, it’s better to use a Mac, but even if I only had an iPad, I’d still manage (though with slightly less optimal results). I’m able to do some programming on the iPad, create graphics, do office work, play games, and essentially use it as a laptop or desktop computer (connected to a monitor). However, it’s clear that its nature is that of a tablet, so some things come with compromises-you can program on it, but it won’t have tools as advanced as on a Mac (I’ve experienced this myself). So, you can accomplish a lot, but for more complex or advanced tasks, it’s good to have a Mac or a PC as well (for example to update maps in my cycling GPS navigation I need a PC / Mac, there is no iPad app). I still love it anyway. 🙂

At 2:09 - you dicuss if you can create headings. Word on iPadOS allows assigning headings, but I think the question is as you stated "can you define headings?" - which to me means the current font of a "Heading 1" is "Calabri 24 point", but I want it as "Helvetica 22 point" - that does not appear possible in Microsoft on the iPadOS.

It may be true that you can only have four windows open at a time, but if you have a second screen plugged in, you can have another four windows open there, thus giving you a total of eight. I can honestly say in nearly 40 years of using computers I have never once felt the need to have more than eight windows open simultaneously.

In regard to Word on iPad, can’t create a template - workaround is to create a document, set it to open as read only and then pin it. Can’t format numbers, sometimes they get messed up and there is no quick way to make them restart at 1. Can’t easily adjust vertical page size (no vertical ruler) - have to set custom page margins to manipulate it. I recently started to use iCloud more and have issues with Files app specifically when in low or no service areas. I save document to view offline, I can edit them but can’t export them as PDFs - I have to fake print, then long press the file to have it generate a pdf, then I have to save that locally. Can’t do revision history for pdfs in preview from iPad, only available on Mac I think. I love the iPad but I feel like it’s constant workarounds to do simple things.

I have the same iPad Pro M4 with keyboard case and have been trying to use it to “replace” my laptop/Mac - so your channel is interesting to me, especially with your background and understanding of more complex workflows. Skydweller7080’s comment about heading styles in word is about DEFINING styles, not applying them using pre-defined styles as in your demonstration. Let’s say for instance, I want to define a heading of Helvetica Bold 28pt with a 1pt border and define that as “Heading 1” - it’s not possible to define that style on iPad and then quickly apply the style on a long-form document. Word on desktop is more robust in that it allows users to have the style window up while displaying the document. I am intrigued by the idea of using the iPad as a computer, but MacOS and desktop-class software is in a different league for power users. I think for the next several years, there’s a place for both the iPad and the Mac. In your upcoming videos, I am curious of reasons why you have decided to simplify your work and life. The feature of the iPad is that it’s limited - yet powerful - so the challenge is in figuring out how to do it more simple on the iPad. For me, many of these tasks are just cumbersome on the iPad - so I have to go back to the Mac…

I have been using the M2 iPad Air 13-Inch and man its so fun to use. I would’ve gone with the M4 pro model but I am not a power user, so some light video editing and photo editing is about all I need to do and the M2 chip is more than enough. If anyone is considering making this a laptop replacement I would for sure go with the cheapest option first, then if you’d like to upgrade in the future to the pro models then go ahead and do so because the 120hz screen, loud speakers, and the powerful M4 chip is a great addition! But, like I said the new 13 inch size for the iPad air is perfect if all you do is watch KZbin, maybe take some notes, video/photo edit here and there, as well as maybe some word documents and excel sheets.

I have a gaming pc and iPad Pro on my desk and I use those devices together. Pc is my 'home base' where all the other devices get backed up (2tb storage) and the platform for advanced tasks like streaming, gaming or 3D editing. iPad is just my 'creative zone' where i use Affinity Suit, Procreate and Nomad Sculpt for start any project I do basically. I never asked my iPad to be a desktop pc but for sure it has a great potential in many fields... talking about mine (graphic design), iPad can be a huge companion for start a professional path and it's also cheaper than a Wacom drawing tablet + a pc paired with if we want the same performance. The problem with iPad comes only when you start comparing it to other powerful devices like a Macbook Pro, because they cost almost the same. I think that the choise between those 2 devices depends on personal needs, in particular if a user need the touch screen or not. For any illustrator or artist who need to draw directly, iPad is a game changer and and absolute must. It's the perfect device for 'hand made' digital art. On the other hand, if someone is more focused on a desktop experience and need to use a keyboard and mouse all the time, I think a Macbook Pro is a way better option. I still have mine here from 2013, still working perfectly after 11+ years. About gaming, just forget Apple.. I'm sorry but I have both Mac and Windows and I can tell you 100% that gaming on Apple is forced and not even a comparable experience to a base gaming pc. Every brand and device focus on a specific target and for sure, apple's targets are not gamers :)

After leaving business, I've decided to make my iPad Pro 13" my primary device and to use standard apple software as much as possible, i.e. I abandoned Microsoft and I don't miss it . There are just a few things I'm missing and I don't get why apple is not offering that. E.g. I have my own music in apple music. While I can access these files on my MacBook, I can't on my iPad. Which is bad, because I use my own music in Final Cut Pro. iPad does not offer time machine, though there is an alternative FileBrowser Pro, which offers kind of a back-up option. One thing I would love to have, but am sure Apple will never offer: To use my iPad as monitor and keyboard for a Mac Mini. And what I find annoying: Apple issues software in baby steps, e.g. journal. Why don't offering it for all devices with a share option, tagging, etc. But all in all: I've been using Apple products for 40 years and I'm happy.

This type of point-to-point review is much needed - thanks, Tech Dad! As for Python: yes, you can run Python interpreters on the iPad, but you will be missing out on the majority of machine learning libraries (like the ones for deep learning). My suggestion: use Blink and ssh into a VPS for that. (You can even run the web version of VS Code with Blink.)

I tried to go iPad only for work. My job is a business analyst is pretty much the office suite/JIRA and similar browser based applications. I was close to going for it full time but ended up getting a Mac for macOS instead. My workplace have recently locked down the ability to access the desktop MS365 apps so can now only access them via a browser (personal Mac). That means my experience is pretty much the same on desktop and iPad. In some cases better on iPad now as they haven’t locked down mobile apps… My one major workflow task I’ve not figured out on iPad OS is taking screenshots and editing them. I don’t mean content creator level in something like photoshop, I just want something like shottr where it’s easy to blur/remove text, add number pins, highlight and add text etc. I know the standard screenshot tool can do some of it but it’s just not fully featured enough. Any suggestions on a workflow option for that on iPad?

Excel no power query, importing data from various sources very limited the one that annoys me the most but is also short on Mac version is get data from web and then transform it. Web browser can’t inspect elements to get to the source for scraping. Pythonista I use it’s very good but only native only libraries also for python juno is good it gives you the ability to do Jupyter notebooks with most modules available not a full experience but close enough on the go. Both are paid but worth it for some coding options

My needs are a lot simpler than those of other people as I don't use the iPad for gaming or business, so Pages and Numbers have sufficient functionality for me. And for my hobbies, Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, and Logic Pro are great options. However, there are reasons why the iPad and iPhone fall way behind the Mac when it comes to being pro machines. Just to give you two examples, there is no clipboard manager, and you can't use alternate fonts or coloured text in the Notes app (yes, I know about coloured highlighting, but it's not the same). Now, these are very basic facilities that are fundamental to pro use of these gadgets. So, IMO they're just not there yet. And given the way Apple implements new features piecemeal, they might never be.

The one downside for me is, its display is made for outside usage, and battery is made for longevity work. Bruh what's the point of having 1600 nits while its battery goes down to 20% under 2hours of procreate and browser use at like 40-50% brightness. And same goes for pencil pro it only works for 3 hours. It's a really beautiful display and feels good to draw even on naked screen but drawing tablet with pc is more efficient. Everybody loves Procreate but I love customizable shortcut key. So, iPad is not working out for me.

so concerning this, I am able to play video in the browser while having sound through a teams call. This works. but playing 2 videos at once in multiple bowser windows…doesn’t work. Can you give me an example of why and when you would want two audio streams going?
@SoYoung2410 күн бұрын
@@Techdad650 First, thanks for your answer! In my use case, I heavily watch TV, listening live radio or music on my computer, I almost always have something playing on the background, but sometimes I just want to open a youtube or facebook video, not necessarily listening, but want to see the video itself, and in the iPad, it will just cut the current audio source. For me it's just not very convenient. Or just browsing the web, sometimes some website have some things running in the background making the background sound stop as well (video player on the web page, or some unknown stuff running on that website). I agree with you for almost everything you said, the iPad is very usable as a computer on external monitor and all, but the lack of simultaneous audio sources is the big problem that prevent me to use it full time as a main device.
