I really like desktop operating systems, mainly because window management is leagues above iPadOS (unless you’ve got an external display). Stage Manager helps, but I find myself picking up my MacBook over my iPad 9 times out of 10 for school or work unless I really need the pencil. Excellent video, though! Now I know it’s really just a preference thing, and that the iPad is a great computing device

Excel and Word apps nowhere near where they need to be to replace desktop versions. Excel, no pivot tables. Word, can’t define styles (Title, Heading 1, Heading 2, etc) Web apps slightly better, but laggy. These are normal user, not pro features. Been following your experience on this, maybe a deep dive on this. Anyway, keep it up!

i upgraded from 11” m1 to 13” M4, and I love my m4 iPad pro, using it for heavy gaming, digital art on procreate, and watching movies and note taking in college, and the battery life is amazing and lasts a day with 80% limit! I use it with a removable magnetic ESR paper-feel screen protector and nillkin bumper case. The iPad OS is so smooth and easy to use as always, and when i see so many youtubers like MKBHD who say this is a waist of money only ‘cause it doesn’t run MAC OS, well, files app sure need more upgrades but i say things don’t exactly work that way! the whole point of iPad is to make you do the things you used to do on computer the easier way on iPad, it it run a desktop os completely it’s the same thing again, and we already have Microsoft surfaces for years but why they don’t get much attention while they run windows all the time? Even now that surfaces are switched to ARM and have more power and efficiency? The point is iPad actually is good the way it is, and youtubers or people arguing about lack of proper software on iPads may see the story from a not so right aspect.

I'm glad you could cover all your bases for what you do. In my case I tried that route but failed to convert. The reason was that Excel for the iPad doesn't have analytical tools that I needed. As in right now they simply do not exist for the iPad version. I also tried the Excel online version to no avail. The greatness about the iPad is that there are new things you could do that with a laptop you can't!

My dream is to only live with an iPad. Although I love my Mac, I absolutely adore the iPad concept. I have an iPad Pro M1 11”, and I’m wondering into upgrading into an M4, but I don’t see the real need… yet. I’m a software developer, and that’s the biggest no-no in the iPad usage. I’m constantly looking for ways to develop using native apps (like Swift Playgrounds) or connecting through SSH to a Raspberry Pi, where I have all the needs to code freely. I’m still experimenting, so I haven’t made the jump to an iPad only life. I think it’s far from now, because making apps for another Apple platforms (macOS, tvOS, watchOS and visionOS) can’t be done without a Mac. But I’m still hoping, because I really enjoy using my iPad.

As a software engineer, don’t think will be ever possible to switch to a ipad. Unless you only do web, and that still uses a lot of services, dockers etc. I tried the ipad route as well and it worked when I had to do aws stuff, but unless they close the gap between mac os and ipad os sadly it won’t be feasible

I’ve used the iPad Pro M1 11” since 2018 for 90% of my computer use and I love it. When the M4 11” came out I bought one to replace the M1 and now I love it even more. I have the pencil and Magic Keyboard (as I did before) but everything works faster and more smoothly and pleasurably than with the M1. I have very few complaints with the iPad except for a few very annoying limitations: You cannot just drop an MP3 file into Apple Music on iPadOS as you can on macOS. File tagging is bad compared to macOS - there you can search for a tag but on iPadOS you have to scroll up and down the list to find the tag you want. No idea why. They are sorted alphabetically now which I don’t think used to be the case. I can’t think of the few other things, but they are limitations that Apple could so easily add to the iPad (it’s more powerful than my M1 iMac) but haven’t 😣 Mostly my iMac is for those things and it allowed me to digitize my vinyl collection and add it all to Apple Music which could not have happened (AFAIK) on my iPad. And the new Riven isn’t on the iPad … But my iPad Pro has been my main computer since 2018 and I don’t see that changing. It’s a remarkable piece of engineering in so many ways.

Word, Google Docs, Excel, Sheets…these need to get a TON better on iPad before I feel comfortable recommending them over the desktop versions. What they could do is offer a choice: do you want the “touch” version, the “desktop” version, or both when you download the app? That would go a long way for me. My iPad is 99% of the way there for my work (I’m a high school teacher), but, like you noted, Google’s apps just aren’t up to par. I have to rely on the school’s Windows laptop to do the other 1% of the work. Also, I just would not feel comfortable writing a thesis or dissertation on the iPad. Word and Google Docs just aren’t there yet.

I never understood it either. For me the only real roadblock with iPad OS is that you can’t place your windows wherever you want, they only go into a few fixed positions. I like to be able to access a desktop behind my apps and drag files to and from the desktop which means window placement is important to me. But you can put two file windows side by side and work like that. iPad does more than 90% of the stuff I do on a Mac but I don’t expect it to be my only device.
@lukchemКүн бұрын
@@mendodsoregonbackroads6632 Are you still on iPadOS 16? Because yes, on 16 Windows placement with stage manager was very limited like how you described. But with iPadOS 17 they fixed stage manager so now there is almost no grid anymore and you can basically place and size your Windows however you want. Or are you on 17/18 and still have a problem, since I myself have no Window related problems anymore.
@mendodsoregonbackroads6632Күн бұрын
@ I’m on 18.1 using an 11” Pro. It has an older A12X chip in though so maybe that’s the issue or maybe it’s the size. In any case the desktop isn’t really a desktop it’s more of the App Launchpad. It’s OK, I really have no expectation of iPad being a replacement for Mac. It’s a very nice addition to one, and often I will take the iPad with me as the portable, and leave the Mac at home for the heavier lifting.

I can't get on board with this advice. What can macOS do for you? Play more than one audio stream at once. Do tasks in the background (use your iPad while it is exporting video, leave Netflix downloading shows in the background). Use a 3rd party webcam and mic. Use a MX master 3 mouse, including scrollwheels and extra buttons. Use an ultra wide display. Change display scaling. Arrange windows exactly as you want them. Have more than 4 windows on screen at once. Run vscode. I'm happy you are happy, but I find there is so much wrong with iPadOS in a desktop setting I've given up on it for doing real work. Note taking, drawing diagrams, content consumption, 1-2-1 meetings all excellent. Maybe it's better if you have a studio display, but that plus M4 ipad pro, plus keyboard and pro pencil - that's 3K or more.

Here's what I don't understand, many people use their phone as a primary computing tool. Hell, I know people who do not have another computing device, just their phone. And yet, I always hear from KZbinrs about the limitations of iPadOS, which is similar if not the same as the iPhone. Thanks for the video.
@paulwoodward82659 сағат бұрын
Nobody is creating a powerpoint slide deck on a phone, or viewing a screen share in a Teams meeting, or photo editing, or coding on a phone. If you're using your phone as your primary computing tool, you are using messaging apps, chat, social media, web browsing. iPadOS does all this just fine too. It's when Apple give you $350 keyboard, mouse support, monitor support, and an M4 chip, you think "this is more powerful than any laptop I own, and costs more, so can it do laptop things?" Many people think this is where iPadOS falls down.

For me, file management lacks ease of use, I need a fully functional terminal with homebrew, better graphic editor usability, some gaming (many devs dropped mac support lately)... and zotero support for word (or a different word processor). Since apple blocks the API in Pages and MS puts not that much energy to develop Word on iPad anymore, it will probably never replace my computer. But I when it's there, I am willed to switch.

I firmly believe the ipad could have been replaced macbook lineup since Apple Silicon was launched. However, from my point of view they do not do so because of the profits of having a macbook and ipad combo (in many cases having the obligation to complement the ipad with a mac) are huge.

i constantly run into the issue that the files app doesn’t reliably sync with onedrive, like, some files simply do not get uploaded, or it takes several days for a photo to be synced, and sometimes I suddenly find multiple copies of the same photo with an added 1, 2, 3, tagged onto the file name. have you ever encountered that issue? that’s what kills the otherwise lovely idea of going full ipad for me, unfortunately.

Sure, it's a computer. And given the accessories they try and sell you, you'd have thought that Apple also thought it was a laptop. iPadOS just isn't up for the task for anything heavier than Word processing and video watching. It has so much power, but a touch screen is horrible for any creative work that isn't pen-related. Sure, I could edit video on an tablet, but it's a worse user experience than a laptop. Sure, I could make music on an iPad, but it has one port and no 3.5mm jack for latency free audio, so now I need a dongle for the most basic of 'Pro' needs. Also the 'Pro' apps are now a subscription, at least Logic and Final Cut are... Sure, iPadOS has a files app, but it pales in comparison to any desktop OS file manager. It is basically a laptop now, but with a bad OS for its intended use-case. It has a top-heavy design so it can't really be used as easily on a lap, and it has a lot less IO than a traditional laptop. It is a computer, but it is very limited in its usability and the only reason I see to get one over a laptop for work is to make KZbin videos about how you only use an iPad for work.

For anything more you are making plenty of sacrifices that you should (and wouldn't) have to make if you just buy a reasonable laptop. - only one port - Apple 'pro' apps are a subscription, rather than just a one time purchase - worse experience on a lap - significantly worse desktop experience - drastically worse file management system - most app equivalents have fewer features compared to desktop counterparts - iPad Pro with keyboard is still more expensive than a Macbook - can't run any other operating systems - laptop cursor much more precise than Now, not everybody needs all of that, but I think far more people would notice than wouldn't if they tried the same workload between a tablet and a laptop for there everyday work.

In many cases it's possible to do kind of the same thing, but with iOS I can't be as fast or precise as with MacOS. On the other hand the pen is just a bonus for me - not a crucial tool. If you have to write/draw a lot, then the iPad wins. I miss some specific apps like QLab and for example typography and layout of making a poster is painful (at least in Affinity) compared to its desktop counterpart.

Ive been m4 pro only user since it came out. The only problem I have run into that I cannot find a workaround is I have a read only PowerPoint presentation that I need to use that has a video embedded in it. I’ve been unable to find a way to play this video.

Got the 2024 iPad Pro 17” M4 and use it as my only computer. It IS my only computer. It is a different experience.

iPad is my main computer since 2020 and it’s absolutely perfect device. When I start use iPad Pro as a main computing device in 2020 it was little bit difficult, cause a lot of functions doesn’t work on iPad, but now in 2024 - I haven’t functions or tasks that I can’t to do on my iPad. I also try MacOS, but it’s boring and I don’t have an idea for what I need a Mac, so I sell my Mac mini. Cause everything I need - my m1 iPad can do

Can you share how your battery health and cycle counts doing?
@martef093 күн бұрын
That's fine but if you need to use specific software as I do for web site development and publishing, QuarkXpress etc then the iPad only is not viable.

My biggest problem is you can’t add music to the iPad without syncing to a computer so it’s a no go for me

Great video. Thanks. I went with the 13 iPad Pro 2TB. I’m hoping it will work without lag or overheating for my usage. I will use it daily for E-Mail, KZbin and some light porn on the weekends.

lol, that's nothing. Until recently I used an iPad Air 5 and Xbox Series X as my primary PC and gaming needs for 18 months. Just sold the Xbox and iPad and built a new gaming PC. Missing the iPad though. Will probably pick up another to use as a second screen.

It's great it works for you, but I thin ka lot of people will just get stuck on the fact the iPad doesn't even support 3rd party browsers properly. You can't use extensions on Chrome/Edge/Firefox, you can't even use Google apps properly, like Sheets, without being pushed to an extremely lightweight version or the App which is awful. Citrix is poor, so if you are NOT a KZbin creator (why do all KZbinrs assume their entire audience are more KZbinrs?) then you can't work reliably with remote desktop environments... so likely 80% of people who work from home in a secure environment, can't use an iPad. I love my iPad and had the same dream as you, that it would one day become the all-in-one device. It's amazing it can do some very high end tasks like playing complex games, video editing, audio mixing and composing... but using a google sheet with javascript? No can do. Use a Firefox extension, nope. Dual-screen citrix connection? No. The list goes on.

I disagree about Office on iPad. Word is lazily programmed. I’m still trying to figure out on what rules pictures work on that Word - they just stick wherever they want. You can’t use bookmarks, you can’t even see where bookmarks are. On Excel, keyboard seems to work whenever it feels like. I couldn’t. Web versions work better on iPad.

If you wanna play, Warcraft classic pick up the base model, M4, Mac mini and connected to your studio display. It’s the best computer I’ve ever bought for 600$

Excel and Power Point for iPadOS are desktop level? What kind of projects do you do? Buying groceries in a store? 😂 Thanks for your channel and the videos, I clicked thumbs-up for you, but MS Office applications for iPad is so terrible that you better not use them at all and switch to web versions.

Omg I disagree on so many stuff I can’t even begin to list them. You are doing yourself a disservice by using an iPad as your computer. Saying that MS office is desktop level on the iPad is all I needed to understand that your view is not realistic.
