My biggest culture shock when coming to Japan was how polite and nice everybody was. I expected (for whatever reason) that foreigners would be viewed negatively, but everybody treated me very kindly and respectfully.

When I went to Japan, one of the biggest culture differences I noticed was the lack of trash cans when you are out in public. Yet the streets are extremely clean. You just have to carry your garbage with you. But honestly, I felt more culture shock returning to the US after the trip. Japan is such a pleasant and beautiful country.

Culture Shock in Japan: Needing to work many hours beyond my contracted hours to do my job to a professional standard (due to sneaky extra work they would "forget" to tell me about)...and not getting paid the overtime for all the days off I had to go into work because of this!

Hi Risa, greetings from Istanbul, Turkey! I really like your videos; i have a question, i appreciate if you can answer. I'm in love with a Japanese man, he don't know English much and I'm trying to learn Japanese. He is very very shy and sometimes that makes me feel like "when he will be more brave to express his feelings?!" He send me a tanabata tree on tanabata day, i was wondering if that is a special meaning of express his feelings or an usual gift? I've put my wish on the tree and shared with him anyway! :) Thank you very much!
Hi Risa, I'm from Brazil and would like to know, if I travel to japan do I have to translate my name? My name is Guilherme and, by what i've searched in japanese is "gyrierume", so i should use "guilherme" or "gyrierume" when introducing myself?

I wonder where Risa experienced those culture shocks; where I live in Europe, it's weird for people to smile at strangers, and the name of the next stop is always displayed on buses. :D

Cultural shock? Mostly acceptable... With exception. Modification of a meal. In Singapore, I can request for more green, no sauce, for burgers, or any meal. Which I can't in Japan.

aren't boku and ore only for boys? and watashi for both girls and boys? are there any other ones for girls?
@Ninja89967 жыл бұрын
Παναγιώτα Δζ Atashi is feminine. Watashi is standard and can be used by anyone. Boku is used by younger boys but some girls use it too (probably because of habit) and ore is used by boys/men who want to sound macho. However, ore may be considered rude too.

When i said "tokyo eki wa do ya det ter rye (ri) desuka" to a japanese person they didn't know what i said but i only repeated the one from here maybe it's one where you have to get it exactly perfect. I'll just say tokyo eki wa doko desuka because they understand me then. Also i never say sumimasen because they think i'm selling something and ignore me where if i just say tokyo eki wa doko desuka they stop and help.
