In the KZbin video "Bugs in Your Tank?" from Phillips Fish Works, Tony converses with Father Fish about the complex ecosystem within fish tanks. They explore the interactions within the food web, highlighting the roles of microorganisms, microfauna, and macrofauna, and emphasize that fish are not just inhabitants but integral components of the food web. The fish contribute through their waste, which acts as a crucial nutrient source for other organisms in the tank. An essential point they discuss is the unintended consequences of human intervention, particularly how the use of broad-spectrum medications in aquariums can disrupt these natural cycles by eliminating vital elements of the food web. This can lead to the proliferation of 'exotic' diseases. Tony and Father Fish advocate for a more naturalistic approach to aquarium maintenance, arguing that allowing nature to manage itself can create a more stable and healthy environment for all organisms within the aquarium. This discussion underscores the importance of understanding and respecting the natural biological processes in aquatic ecosystems. Father Fish says "Nature is Dominant."

Adding the bag of bugs + pods made my tank come to life! The fish are now roaming around excitedly checking the plants and substrate for a snack instead of waiting at the glass for me to feed them. The fish are no longer bored Now it truly feels like observing a natural habitat 🙏 Appreciate you all!

Every fish keeper needs to see this video. This video explains so much. Building a natural food web is so important because it brings nature to your fish. In a sense it returns them to nature. Fish were not designed to live in a sterile environment, they are found in swamps, ponds, and streams. These environments are wild and teaming with microscopic life. Fish enjoy and thrive in wild environments. They are part of the natural world and recreating this for them takes stress off of them and us. Natural fish keeping has been the most rewarding and relaxing hobby I’ve done. It helps me build a connection with nature which is what we all need. Thank you Father Fish and Tony Philips for making the process of building a natural food web easy to understand and easy to do. God bless y’all.

They bring up a very good point of not letting problems stress you. For example, I have a 5-month-old 2 gallon nano with my prized orange shrimp and they just had their first clutch of babies hatch. Out of nowhere one day my water is cloudy. I did my research, I found out the things that could be, I tried a couple of solutions and eventually fixed the problem. It took a few days but I was patient, I didn't freak out and fret over the aquarium because the shrimp seemed alive and healthy, and most importantly I didn't stop myself from enjoying looking at my shrimp just because the tank wasn't at optimal conditions.

I was *literally* waiting for such a video, I personally prefer to watch all those cool little bugs and worms and invertebrates in an aquarium and such habitats more than the fish themselves. Some of the coolest things ever, I remember being in awe of sand piggies back in the day, and that's why resurrection jars are more of my interest than fish tanks. Please get into more of the biology and foodwebs work in a separate video ❤

Ugh, so expensive to start a brand new tank after years out of the hobby, but it's so much fun to collect the dirt & random stuff from around the yard to put in the new, dirted tank. I've got compost with mycorrhizae & fungi in it. I've got black soil compost, coco coir (leftovers from seedlings), moringa leaves & powder mixed with red, southern clay & pond water. =p Got all my sand, rocks & other decor ready to go. Just need to haul in the old aquarium table after it's been repainted & I'm setting up TODAY in order to prep for some shrimp, a nerite & a couple bettas. (Will see how they do apart & together to see if I can keep them together permanently.)

@tino5621 Ай бұрын
Not expensive at all to start a tank if you do it the natural way. Go to a pond and shovel out some pond mud/dirt but keep all the plants attached to it and you lay it all in the tank kind of like a carpet. Keep doing that till you carpet the tank bottom, now you have a natural deep substrate with established plants in it already. Start a resurrection jar with the pond water and microorganisms then add that to your tank. Literally a piece of nature.

We, as humans, have many times the number of bacteria, fungi and viruses in us than we have cells in our body. I am sure it's the same for fish and the aquatic environment. These microorganisms are essential for survival - there is a symbiotic relationship that, when absent, will create nothing but problems for people and aquariums.

Can you do a video on African dwarf frogs. My keep dying and I don't know why. Water checks out. I have snail, guppies. Tetras and Petcos in there with the frogs. I feed the frogs bloodworms by hand so they are eating. Then they look like they are having trouble swimming and then they stop moving. In a matter of mins. I have live plants, gravel for now, heater and a filter with low flow for the frogs. Please help.

@TheNelsonriv80
@TheNelsonriv80 Ай бұрын
I have some ceratophyllum demersum, a fern, moss tree shaped like a cactus, a tree trunk that I bought from Petco so it's not real. I heard something that they might be eating the rocks and getting it stuck in their throat but when I massaged it the little body there was nothing in there. Where am I putting the sand all mixed together or a layer on the top? Should I forgot the gravel all together I was thinking about adding your dirt on to it, but I won't know how to do that since they're in there. Everything else is fine but the frogs keep on dying and those are my babies. They also eat dried bloodworms and sometimes I put pellets in there. Most of the time it's just the dried blood worms. Should I be adding any other plants I was afraid of putting anything that floats on the top because they might come up for air and then drown. There are no good videos on African dwarf frogs none explaining what happens when they sick and how to treat them. I want to get a bigger time for the frogs but scared that they might drown. By the way thank you so much for your videos they've been a great help.

FF, I have a question. In a shipment of plants, I inadvertently inherited snails, and all kinds of worms, including planaria. Before I added fish, once the light got to a certain dimness, everything would come out of the substrate and would congregate on the glass....Once I added fish, I noticed that wasn't happening as much. What Im wondering, is it safe to assume that I also inherited micro and macro fauna? Common sense tells me the answer is yes...I am feeding a small amount of frozen foods every other day. Id really like to extend that to every 3, or even more. In your experience, would it be safe for the fish to go that long if Im not positive they have plenty of nourishment to forage on?
