I was going to make a video about this same exact topic. Heck, even if your lower back is FRIED, you could still do some heavy pull-ups and pullovers, rear delts...etc to get EXTRA volume in. Not to mention the back could handle tons of frequency and you could actually get away with hitting some part of your back every workout for the rest of the year

My back is burning! I haven't conventional deadlifted in months, I simply got stronger using the trap bar deadlift.

I have a couple minor issues with some of the things you mention. I honestly think that if you're not using machines and dumbbells in your back workout, you're not optimizing your growth (I know from your videos that you use machines, but it comes across in this video like you're anti-machine). It's a great way to attack imbalances and get extra volume without adding extra volume for the lower back. Doing barbell movements builds your power and is your base, it always is, but my back growth has really excelled since I've coupled that with old school bodybuilding approaches. Full ROM cable rows (full stretch at bottom, full extension at top), dumbbell rows with full extension at the top, lat pullovers with a cable, lat pulldowns, etc. I'm a nearly advanced lifter, I can Pendlay row 275x3-5 strict depending on the day. I was using the cheating method on a lot of my movements and it was working for a while, but eventually I plateaued, even with a concurrent setup and a good exercise selection and volume. Honestly, I think the big reason for my new growth is utilizing the [thoracic] extension at the top of my back movements. I had never experienced the pinching sensation or DOMS I got from doing so. It has filled out my mid lats which were clearly a lagging part of my physique despite my training level. I feel much better lat recruitment now on all my pulling movements after dedicating at least an exercise per workout to strict form with focus on the peak contraction and thoracic extension at the top. My deadlift setup is also a lot more solid. I'll let you be the upper back guru. Phil can be the rear delt guru. I'll take the mid back ;)
@AlexLeonidas7 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree at all. I literally do everything that you mention. The problem is when people rely exclusively on that stuff while using super light weights, and neglecting bigger lifts.
@benjaminx78227 жыл бұрын
He never siad that dumbell rows are useless he said it because most gym dumbell racks goes up only to a 100 lbs and that isnt enough weight to produce max growth
@DCJayhawk577 жыл бұрын
Haha my gym only goes up to 100s (gonna max out potential eventually, as Alex said) which I currently do for 4 strict sets of 8 after doing compound stuff. I honestly have no idea what I could lift because I've never had a gym go over 120s, but I plan on just upping the reps because I find dumbbell rows really helpful currently; I'll probably mess with tempo or superset when going up in reps stops making sense. At my old gym they had T-bar setup and I was doing single arm barbell rows and Meadows rows on that. Don't have a place to do that currently. I do agree with what Alpha says overall, I just personally haven't gotten as much out of cheating reps as he has. I have responded better to a combo of strict power variations like Yates or Pendlay with a bunch of bodybuilding work in the 6-12 range. I do think that as I continue to progress I'll have to be more creative.

Awesome video! just wanted to add that if you do focus on your back you mustn't neglect your shoulders, specifically the side delts. What happened to me was that I focused so much on traps,neck and upper back that my shoulders were neglected a bit and it appeared as if I had no shoulders at all due to my traps and neck growing so fast. In my opinion side delts are a must when focusing on yoke training.

5'7" (fellow manlet), 185-190 lbs (fluctuate a lot), 16-20% bodyfat. Rear delts are pretty damn big. They grow like weeds and all I do for back is Pendlay row and multiple pull-up variations, mostly heavy chins. They really cause an issue for me when trying to stay tight on the floor press. The answer on what to do is probably right in front of me, but I would still appreciate some insight from others. Thank you.

@Breizheker13 жыл бұрын
A beginner is probably sedentary and don't benefit a lot from front delts devellopment. I usually recommed that when you do 3 sets of push for an exercise you got to do 4 sets of pull with an antagonistic exercise (bp=row, ohp=pullup variation), plus don't target front delts directly and do 3/4 sets for rear delts every workout. So if you do 6 sets of press in one workout, you do at least 8 sets of puling and 3/4 sets of rear delts wich translate in alsmost double volume in pulling motion compare to pressing. Major benefit is health but more than that a big back lead to more mass on the upper body than a big chest, so you will look bigger and have a better posture. Easy to apply if doing full body/upper lower/torso and limbs.

I'm the type where my back is just naturally stronger and I can row more weight than I can press. If I go 2 weeks without lifting due to vacation, etc., then my back drops a bit as far as weight that can be lifted but my chest drops much more and takes more time to recover to its pre-break strength. The muscles in the back overall are so much bigger than the pecs. It's weird that so many lifters overemphasize pec development, or maybe not.
