I ran a family ranch in Montana for 25 years, and that involved building new and rebuilding old barbed wire fences. What I found worked best for me, was two heavy duty wire clamp-jaws from old rope wire stretchers with a come-along in the middle. Worked great for long runs and short runs down to about ten feet. It was very exact, and if I had pulled a wire too tight crossing a gulch, all I had to do was back the come-along off a little until things were perfect.

I watched one of your videos comparing a come-a-long with one of those Walkers; I know I'm missing part of the name of that tool, but it out performs the come-a-long also; because you don't have to reset it like you do the come-a-long! I know that isn't the technical name for it, but in the video I'm referring to, you called it a chain walker or something like that. I can't say, even in Oklahoma, I haven't seen anyone use anything but a come-a-long for barbed wire fence or chain link for that matter, and I've never seen anyone use the rake you use, but most of the fencing going up around where I am is privacy fence, either vinyl or wood, redwood or smooth cedar.

I pinched a thumb one time. I went to the shop, found a 1/2" galv pipe and welded it to the "open" end as a handle away from the pinch point. That was about 30 years ago and I still have and use this golden rod even at 77 year old. The golden rod is too short. By the time you re-tension the wire on an old fence, the clamp jaws are almost touching and you have little or no room to tie the wire. Yeah the chain tensioner looks like a winner.

As an Aussie fencing contractor my chain strainer (what you are demoing) has 4 metre long chain (12 foot) and the handle is 80 centimetres (a little under 3 foot ) long. Swivels in all the places yours doesn't and has a hook on the end of the chain. Waratah Contractor strainer, have 2 of them to use with another bit of kit. A wedge lock bar strainer, used for installing cyclone. Then if needed there's the Gripple strainer. Hope this doesn't confuse you too much... 😎

Just in AG fencing for vineyards my company has done over 200 miles,8' high HT hinge lock,I retired 7 years ago,using only chain grabs,crimp sleeves and gripples,gripples for braces,I don't know how many miles of 4 point HT barb,hundreds I suppose,chain grab is the best tool ever made for fencing,I have two over 40 years old.

And I agree abt the other stretcher, we use it as a gate opener, to get some slack in the barbed wire fence gate our back neighbor had to put. yep they are much better than the strainrite never slip no need to line up chain no annoying spring easy to release and a tension gauge only negative is can be a bit sharp when new

Unfortunately, as far as I know, there is no distributor in the US. The shipping from down under is cost prohibitive. At least we can get the Strainrite at a reasonable cost.

Nice video. American fencing tools baffle me, some of it just looks so antiquated. I've never seen a wire tensioner like that. Those Strainrite type ones have been widely used here for about 40 years if not more. Good to see you guys are using some decent stuff.

I agree with old technology but it works. I had one tool patent 1910 to pull barbwire or any type strand wire around wooden post. It worked fantastic until it got lost. We called it toucan because when it was open it had a bill like a toucan. That tool he uses works great but I use the old type that has a loop, tapered bar, and heavy round ring with a slot. Slide the wire through slot turn the ring. Tension does the rest and don't have to worry about the wire ever coming out. Simple and safe. Speeco use to make them. Really old tech but works.

The golden rod is an antiquated piece of garbage but still the most prevalent stretching tool in the west here. I've know about chain strainers for about 20 years now. However, they still aren't commonplace

Better to wrap the chain around the strainer post the other way so chain comes round the side the wire is attached to less likely to bend the wire gripper thingy on y chain , 30yrs fencing contractor in UK .

The thing that is nice about a bar stretcher is the fact that they doesn't get in the way as much for splicing. I would like to see someone put better clamps on a bar stretcher to make a stretcher that is the best of both Worlds. Also, some bar stretchers have a release and reset feature so the short length is less of a problem. The clamps on our chain stretcher are not that great and require some effort to lock them in. They also don't work well with barb wire.

New barbed wire fence we used a block and tackle to stretch it...the goldenrod was only used to repair make repairs...now block and tackle sits in a pail and goldenrod sits on a nail....can't throw away history!

I was about to say get a strainrite strainer like i use in nz for fencing as that thing you were using is crap you can get one with a much longer chain kiwi made and works a treat and use a crimp to join and your done

Looks a lot like a Haynes wire strainer been made and used in New Zealand for over a 100 years. Original engineering works were powered by a windmill and a water turbine

Pretty sure I will stick with my Goldenrod. That thing looks like a pain to set up, too many parts, make sure your chain is perfectly aligned, etc. Glad you like it, but my old Goldenrod is compact simple and a great all in one device.

There is such a thing as taking things too far. I worked at a cattle farm that had us recycle cable from logging operations to build the "ultimate fencing" Well a few years into it the old timer accidentally hooked the fence with a D8 cat and because the fencincing was so "ultimate and unbreakable" he tore down miles of fencing in just a couple of minutes. Keep it simple stupid will never become something that does not apply to everything just as having built in failure points will never become applicable.

The chain stretcher is too slow. Add a wire stretcher end to a come along and it's way faster.

I don't know a single professional AG fence contractor using a come-along. We used to use them for chain link and we won't even use them for that anymore. They are always bound up and can't spool enough up on the reel about like the golden rod.

Nothing new and it's not the best; the Australian fence crinklers and the James Higgins tool are easier to use, do as good or a better job and are much quicker. I have both and they make fence-fixing far less of a pain.

I use my boundary strainers( the long chain version designed to pull strainer bars) as a come a long. It's faster, doesn't jam. And just plain works better.

I like your attitude and videos but must point out that you have a little to learn about the chain type stretchers. No disrespect to you but I have been using these for 60 years and there are a few things you need to learn. You never tie off in middle of the stretchers but over the grip on chain end.In stead of longer chains you hook a second chain to the wire and walk handle onto the 2nd chain and stretch up.
