hours of trying to find a video on my bike noise now this video just says it all thanks dude

I do have one of the cheaper DT Swiss Spline wheelsets on my bike and this issue started to show early. Having tried multiple things I eventually spotted the rubbing of the spokes and how, if I moved them as shown in the video, they made the same noise I heard while riding. Glad to have found this confirmation of my suspicion by a professional. Though not the answer I wanted to hear, this sure is the answer I needed.

If it makes you feel better, this happens to $3k Enve wheels, Zipps, etc. It's interesting that you'll never see this happen on Mavic wheels with bladed spokes because they engineer gaps in the lacing profile so that the spokes never touch even when they cross.
@simonrajh Жыл бұрын
I second this. My DT Swiss CR1600 are doing the same. Fucking bladed spokes. Took me few months to figure it out. Paid nice money for it and in the end I get creaking like I ride a fucking 50 year old bike. Terrible.
@kristofdb713911 ай бұрын
Yeah same here on my ER1600 wheelset. All was good in summer, until i did one autumn ride in pouring rain. Low and behold, the next time i went out, my spokes creaked when braking. I immediately thought it must be the spokes, because of the nature of the sound. However, it is pretty sad to be confronted with this when buying wheels you thought would last you years.

Thank you! Newer Zipp 303 FC starting to creak on bladed spokes, especially when getting out of the saddle. Funny thing is my 10 year old Mavic Cosmic SLRs with bladed spokes never creaked like this.

The bladed spokes do not touch when they cross over one another in Mavic-built wheel sets.

I even experienced it for round spokes as well , got two cycles with round spokes btwin riverside 120

If they're round the solution is a simple tie and solder. Problem solved, and the wheel will be stiffer.

For my DTSwiss folks, I saw another KZbin video last season where they were recommending oiling the blade spokes every few hundred miles. I guess that’s the cost of the 0.25w efficiency gain😂. I can’t recall what the oil was but I do remember thinking that was an odd lubricant to use on the spoke.
@BBInfinite3 ай бұрын
We find that grease stays longer. We simply spread the spokes apart, dab a bit of Motorex in between, and let em go. Wipe off excess. It's about all you can do.

Can i just tighten the spokes? or that wont do anything?
@demri1234 ай бұрын
Yea same question. This is related to the tension or not??

Mine is just 6 month old decathlon mtb started doing these sound , its round spokes. I took a spoke wrench and tighten them , isnt that what you are supposed do ?
@BBInfinite8 ай бұрын
Often, new wheels need to be re-tensioned once they've been ridden some. If you did this in a truing stand and were careful not to pull the wheel out of true, then yes, that's what you are supposed to do.

If the problem is the contact area, does it make sense to replace half the spokes? Round on flat has little surface area. Amd you still get half the aero.
@BBInfinite Жыл бұрын
Interesting comment. Has anyone done this?

@@BBInfinite Alternatively rotate them all 180 degrees. Give them a new surface to reset the proces?
@BBInfinite Жыл бұрын
@@Azeazezar If that's possible, why not, but we can't think of any wheels that would work on. It'd have to be straight pull, no j bends or any other anti-rotation features.
@Azeazezar Жыл бұрын
@@BBInfinite Thats probably why it came to my mind. Currently strugling getting a spoke undone on this straight pull wheel. Its round and has no anti rotation features. Rotating the nipple just rotates the spoke. Gues im gonna have to cut it or put it in a vice.
@YALLA3758Ай бұрын
The ones that are so loose that making sound or tight ones?
@BBInfiniteАй бұрын
The spokes are properly tensioned. Bladed spokes creak over time when they are are in contact with one another. Notice how many companies, like Mavic, use bladed spokes but never have this problem because they design the hubs so that the spokes never touch where they cross over one another.
@aleydrus8067 Жыл бұрын
Is there anything structurally wrong with the spoke or is it just an annoyance issue?
@BBInfinite Жыл бұрын
Nothing is wrong with the materials. It's simply a result of the application. Bladed spokes that cross with contact will eventually creak at the contact points. It takes awhile, but it's basically inevitable. Changing the offending spokes fixes it.
@ZonkedPlyzАй бұрын
is it still safe to use a creaking wheel??
@BBInfiniteАй бұрын
Depends on why it's creaking. If it just creaking because the bladed spokes overlapping as shown in the video, the wheel is perfectly functional, just annoying.

@@zanguro6200 after 3 months, theyre still there. If the bike is stationary, and you press down on the bike, you can hear the spokes creak. I suspect its the flat bladed spokes rubbing against each other.

Ughhh, I have a set of DTSwiss G1800 wheels, this is the fourth season on them and the creeking is madening and embaressing! Who wants to be "that guy!" I have gone through every bolt on my bike, i'm on my second bottom bracket and this video has to be the reason. It only creeks when I stand on the pedals so all that loading on the rear has to be it. I hope, anyways! Thanks for posting this video.
@elcid_13243 ай бұрын
Also have DTSwiss, I only get the creak from the front wheel. I assume it’s how the weight is distributed on the TRI bike. What’s odd for me is it only starts after about 60-70 miles into a ride. It’s completely silent when I first start.

No your not putting tention on the spokes by sitting on it, the hub is supporting your weight by being bolted to the frame fool
@BBInfinite Жыл бұрын
That's like saying a tree is being held up by its branches. I think you are joking, certainly, but for those who may not understand, a wheel is joined to the hub by spokes, and these spokes work by suspending the hub in the wheel. When you get on a bike, your bodyweight pulls down on the spokes that are above the hub.
@erichvonmanstein6876 Жыл бұрын
