Perhaps interestingly, one of my machines is an Octavia estate 2ltr. TDI. Build plat Sept. 07, took delivery Jan. 08. The machine has now done 305k., and my partner uses it as work machine. The machine is regularly serviced by a trusted mechanic. The mechatronics was replaced under warranty at ~7k and it still shifts as new. The diesel does not use any oil between services. On a 55ltr. tank will do near 900kms. around town (Melbourne) and near 1300kms. country travelling, for example, the Hume. Water pumps were a worry about every 60k, but after about five years changed mechanic and learned his predecessor had used a water-soluble goo and for some reason after last replacing it has run some 130ks without issue. The overflow reservoir was replaced once some twelve years ago and has since been solid. Diesels are hard on batteries so don't expect to go any longer the period stated on the battery. The machine has never been garaged and with the assistance of leaving a rear window down a few centimetres when the ambient temp is above 30. Most chassis bushes were replaced at about 240k, and strangely enough, the machine does not present with any rattles or squeaks. A few inner knocks but no rust. Acknowledging the machine is based on the Golf 5, it was put together in Czechia, not South Africa where Oz sourced Golf 5's were sourced. The aircon compressor was replaced at around 180k with one sourced from Peugeot, and it still works! No issues (other than the water pump) re cooling system. The machine has done a lot of country (where it excels), urban and inner-city travel. Replacing the timing belt every 100k is irksome, but has dividends in light of reliability. Gets service every 12k. The driver's seat is in terminal decay, and that plastic coating on the paint job is now blah. Good car.

Great stuff, chaps, thank you. Just one clarification, Volvo invented the three point safety belt, but it was a static belt. Not sure who invented the inertia reel but it was some time later I think. You’re correct about Volvo not patenting the three point belt. Mercedes-Benz took the same approach to many of its safety developments over the years, including its work on ABS. Cheers.

I liked the last part about an R8. A car is a car. So many bits are shared e.g. a MAF sensor for a Disco 2 V8 is the same as a E39 BMW M5 from the same era. The plastic housings are different but the actual sensor is a stock Bosch part. That's where forums can be really helpful. Always buy genuine sensors though, no matter what car but if can source an identical OEM from a lower spec model why not? Nice Q&A
