One of the more challenging behaviors to fix with an "enthusiastic dog" is jumping up on things. On your couch, on your counters and especially jumping up on people! In this video, Instructor Steve is going to show you several simple tips to teach your dog to stop jumping up. Jumping is a frustrating behavior to fix, and it can also be a dangerous behavior for both people and your dog. Steve will not only talk about the dangers of jumping, but he will also give you some dog training tips specifically to stop jumping up on counters and jumping up at guests/visitors. He'll also show you how to teach your dog to not jump up on the couch, and a few ways that you can increase the challenge once your dog is successful!

Great advice! Also really important to teach certain breeds that are susceptible to intervertebral disc disease, such as Dachshunds and Pekingese, and older dogs that have arthritis to not jump up and down high surfaces as this can really hurt them. :)

Getting lots of ideas for changing my doggos behaviour, its easiest to start with known people. Once he gets that down lets see if he can behave better when ever strangers on walks wants to say hi - which Ive said "Sorry, not today" to in general since I dont want him to rehearse the jumping. Dont agree in general with physical corrections but overall lots of great tips! Thanks.

How do I handle the fact that our 9yo Aussie has a longstanding history of being allowed on the furniture at will, but we want to train our new puppy girl to have better manners? My dog seems to attract a lot of admiration and attention when we are out walking. She is a gorgeous Sheltie and super friendly. Having trouble stopping her from jumping on everyone we pass on our walks. It’s hard to tell a stranger who wants to pet her not to do so. Should I be telling them “don’t touch her”? She can sense that they Want to give her attention because they are usually saying “ oh! She’s sooo beautifuuul!” Then she gets excited and jumps up on them. But if passerby shows no interest in her she knows it and doesn’t try to pursue their attention. It would be great to have a video about how not to jump on people while you are walking in the parks and streets. 🙏🏻

I have an 8 month old beagle. Being a scent hound he can smell everything everywhere. My issues are him jumping up to the counter, dining table and for some reason on the top of his crate. Anything I put down for him like a bed he'll chew it, even my ruggable area rugs pulling them across the floor. He all of a sudden started pulling on the edges of all of my area rugs. He's always wired coming in from a walk and gets the zoomies running around the floor then grabs the edge of the area rug and pulls it as mentioned. Anytime I say off, I get backtalk barking like a teenager! This is our second beagle. He's much more challenging than our first. Thank you for the informative video. I will try this training and see what happens.

I hope you read this comment I would really love the advice! I'm confused and dont want to do the wrong thing! Firstly, I want to say thank you for all the work you put into your videos! It shows and it really helps...you are my favourite dog trainers and I love your training style! My question: I will be flying out to get my puppy in a few weeks. He will be flying back with me and we will get back 8:30pm (it's the best I could do, no earlier flights unfortunately) this leave me very little time to introduce him to his crate and make it a fun place for him. I'm worried putting him into a crate the first night will make him view it negatively and affect future crate training etc. Especially since he will have been in his travel crate for quite a few hours during our travel. Should I let him sleep on the bed with me. Should I sleep on the floor with him... am I over thinking 😳
@sherriwilson9226
@sherriwilson9226 3 жыл бұрын
IMO you should still put him in a crate first night. Maybe put treats or something to chew on. This way he sees the crate as a safe place and not a place where he’s being put because he’s in trouble.

I have a 4 year old Boston Terrier. His name is Ollie. He has been with my boyfriend since he was a baby. It was just the two of them for about 3 years. I would go over and visit and he was such a calmer and more well behaved dog when it was just the two of them living together. He would still climb on people and think he was smaller than he actually is (he is a big boy, about 45 pounds), but my boyfriend would let him do that. My boyfriend moved in with me about a year and a half ago. Ollie went from being a bachelor in sunny Georgia, to having to share attention with two cats up in snowy Wisconsin. My two cats, I both adopted 2 and 3 years ago. Nova, spent three years at the shelter. She was the longest resident at the time. She is a VERY shy timid cat. Does not like to be held. LOVES pets but is still a little anxious when you initially go to pet her. She is about 6 and a 1/2 now as I have had her for around 3 years. Ember, I adopted about two years ago. She is a very friendly and curious cat. She came from a hoarder house so she doesn’t have the best of manners yet but is definitely improving. When we first introduced the cats to Ollie, Ember was scared and nova just didn’t really care. She just observed from a distance. Ollie was always just more curious of them in the beginning. As time went on, Nova and Ollie kept ignoring each other and Ember and Ollie became closer friends. They would sniff each other and play a little. They got more comfortable around each other and started to play more and more. Now, as I mentioned...Ollie does not realize how big he is and he is a rough player. Ember will be walking across the room and Ollie will come up all playfully and knock her right over. Ollie likes to playfully nip at her belly and ember playfully swats at him. However, after awhile, Nova and Ollie started to not like each other. Nova is extremely protective of Ember. If Ollie plays a little too hard and causes Ember to meow, Nova will get in a protection stance and hiss at Ollie. This then causes Ollie to turn around and bark constantly at Nova. Nova would just stand there in her stance and Ollie would bark and bark and bark. If Ollie got too close, Nova would give him a little swat. Normally at that point Ollie would back off but then continue to look all over the place barking and barking. Fast forward now to months later and Nova doesn’t even acknowledge Ollie anymore. She doesn’t pay him any attention. Sometimes she tries to be playful with him by rolling over and meowing a little but Ollie just continues to bark and bark and bark. Nova sits up in her cat tree looking the other way and Ollie will just come up and bark and bark at her. We had to put a little kennel fence up around the cat tree cause Ollie would put his two front paws up there which would upset Nova. He barks at everything constantly. Sports are the worst on TV. Any animal on tv, anyone who knocks at the door. If he is sitting outside on his leash. He will bark at any dog or person walking by. He is very aggressive towards other dogs that walk past him while he is on his outside leash which we have attached to the house. He did once get off it and lunge after a dog. He has done similar things also. He never did really get along with dogs but never showed that much aggression. I think it’s because that’s his territory. If we are out walking on a leash, he doesn’t even look at a dog anymore if he sees one. We managed to train him there. He is constantly jumping up on people. Anyone who comes in the door. He is sooooo hyper and and excited when anyone or even my boyfriend or I walk in the door. We can’t get him to stop jumping up. Then he goes and barks some more at the cats. He is very territorial. Anywhere he sleeps, that is his space. If you put your hand down to pet him when he is sleeping, he snaps. He has never purposely attacked a person but if he is sleeping and snaps, his tooth has gotten caught on people before. Or, if he is playing too hard. We have tried so many things, dog training classes, constant treats, time outs, nothing seems to work. We’ve tried the clicker training, beeping and vibration collar. We haven’t tried the shock setting yet as it was our last resort. At this point, we would be open to it. We play with him constantly and he gets taken on a lot of walks. He is definitely not lacking attention. But if we give attention to either of the cats instead of him, he gets extremely jealous and upset. Any advice?

Good info now I don’t get a lot of visitors to my apartment, so how would you handle to not want to jump on people when you’re walking them outdoors daily. My dog loves to jump on people outdoors when I come across another dog walker or neighbor , how do it train him not to jump up on people outside, sometimes these folks want to pet my dog which happens to be super friendly dog. I ask him to sit but he quickly jumps up on people when they pet him. What do I do to curtail this behavior.

My puppy is almost trained not to mouth all the time now. Part of training him not to jump on me when I’m walking around the house seems to be keeping my hands by my side and not swinging them. His nose wants to stay down near the possible food source and there’s no moving hands to excite him to play. Discovered this by chance observing him.

I just adopted a 34 lbs, 3 year Queensland Heeler stray from a shelter who is house trained but apparently was accustomed to jumping in laps, being on the couch, and jumping in the middle of beds in bedrooms none which I am not allowing him to do at the moment. I am actively working to correct this behavior by crate training him and introducing him to a dog bed with positive reinforcement techniques and treats; however, it looks like he is not food motivated. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct these bad habits?

Thanks for the tips I’m gonna really try work on his sit. Any suggestions of treats he will be more interested in?

ANT ADVIXE IS HELPFUL I have a question My dog gets very exited when we are playing with toys its nearly impossible to get her to let me have it to throw it and if I do get it my hand she jumps up and tyes to grab it. And if I have treats with me to reward her when she doesn't jump up, she has no interest what so ever in the toy and will only be focused on the treets. I will be able to throw the toy but she won't go get it instead she will stay next to me with the treats and she won't get any energy out. And if I don't have any treats at all she won't listen. PLEASE ANY ADVICE IS HELPFUL

if you work on just "wait/stay" and "release" commands, sometimes when my dog gets too focused on treats, i can say "release" and she'll snap out of it. so, work on wait and release, it pays off!

How do you extend it to when you're not in the room? Our pup is fine when we're in the kitchen, when we cook she goes to her place and chills and she will ignore food on the counter while we are present. As soon as we leave the room she jumps up on the counter to check for food even if the counters clean

I have been watching your videos & attempted to put a house leash on my puppy but all he does is chew the leash the entire time it’s on him and is so distracted by the leash, we cannot get any actual training done. Any tips?

It’s got to be so worth it for the dog. Bits of cooked chicken works well.

What kind of treats do you use? It seems that in training one can go through a ton of treats. What's a cheap, yummy treat to use? Homemade suggestions? Thanks.

And the number one message we need to get out there to everybody as trainers is: We allow puppies when they're very little to jump up on us because it is innocuous and adorable and then when they get bigger they're suddenly not allowed to do that. It's one of the most confusing and unfair thing we do to them. Not only is it something that's suddenly not allowed but it's something that they've been being rewarded for their whole early puppyhood! We need to teach our puppies from the very beginning not to jump up on us by simply only giving them affection and play with them when they are not jumping on our legs when they're little. This sudden change of rules just because they got bigger does not make sense to them and makes training more challenging. It's SO hard to resist an itty bitty jumping little puppy on our legs but we can still give them just as much affection and laugh and play with them the second they put all four on the floor....❤

I’m trying to train my dog to not jump on me when she sees the leash and she’s excited to walk; since I can’t use my leash for that training do you (or any commenters) have any advice?

Try to put the leash away untill your dog calms down. Every time he gets excited put it away and try it again. It might work :)

When working with dog jumping on people, how to teach a "proper" way for them to great guests? My dog can stay in a position when people come over, but once i let him loose of the position, he goes crazy excited, jumping and licking. I would like to teach him how to great people so that it would be safe and not disruptive, but so he would still have a chance to say hello, calm down and get used to others being around. Would you have any advice on that? :)

I taught my dog to not jump on us when he was a puppy but he is now almos 3 and I cannot let him off-leash in dog parks because he will jump on strangers. I have tried it all... but I don't know what to do about that behavior. If he is off-leash, I cannot correct him. Does anyone have an idea of what could I do? Thanks in advance!!

@@bearbear4030 HI Bear 🐻 I was very much against shock collars. Now that I've done my research about them I decided I needed to try one on my Cane Corso Mastiff. This Collar was the best thing I have bought for my dog. He listen so well and I rarely have to use the shock button I use the warning beep noise and Odin does exactly what I want. He is 8 months old and 120 lbs Soooooooo Sweet and Smart. Plus I feed Raw diet. Omgosh nothing but muscle !!

What about its your own kids. Do you leave them on their leash every time your kids are in the room? My puppy has only just come home with me and he is excited to play with the kids everytome he sees them, but constantly jumps on them with his sharp Lillie paws and nips at their hands while they try to fend him off. Not sure what the best way to proceed is.

get a leash on, take him away from the guest or excitement till he is calm, walk a bit closer then turn around back and forth, till you get closer to the guest and he is still listening.
