I managed to make a backup of an obscure software CD disc that had begun to rot and the first thing I did was to upload the "iso" Image to *The Internet Archive* as well as *Vetusware.* I also made it part of a bigger software collection that I burnt to two separate Blu-Ray *M-discs* . I'm so glad that there are now many people making a concerted effort to make backups of their old discs lying around. Who knows, one of your old discs may hold something of immense value to someone out there.....

I wanted to add that backing up video game console optical media can be done easily and accurately with the MPF GUI for DiscImageCreator. Its used by No-intro and Redump to dump optical media accurately and reliably. Great video! 😃

Great video. I've been using ImageBurn, EAC, Teracopy, and "some other software you might have named" for years. Edge rot on pressed disks is a real thing, and it can move rather quickly once it starts. Big hard drives are cheap right now, so save that data!

I’ve just now started this process, and was not prepared for just how many would have errors. Almost all of my DVD-Rs are fine, but the CD-Rs are severely hit or miss. I have a bunch of drives to try if I really need to, but I’m not hopeful it’ll make a huge difference. I also would’ve expressed the importance of checking Isobuster for old sessions. Obviously for once written backups, it’s not important, but for CDs used like a flash drive, you can find some good stuff.

Some people are in denial because it hasn't happened to their discs yet. But I'm starting to see the effects slowly over the years. Burned discs like my mixtapes are degrading in quality and some becoming unreadable. These are from 2004ish so they're almost 20 years old. Also avoid sticky labels as the glue damages the data. Those were the first to go.

M-Discs are actually great. Those and modern BluRays use inorganic dyes so this doesn’t affect them :D Mostly just CD-Rs and eventually DVD-Rs

I don't know if I'm either lucky or disc rot is very unlikely, as I've burned tons of discs since early 90's and from those none of them have suffered from such. I had access to a Philips CD writer since 1993 which costed like $5000 back than and empty disc went between $50-100 depending if them came with cradle or not and on coating used.

This is very,very helpful thank you! I have started using TeraCopy to copy all of my backup cd/dvd-rs to my hard drive. As I am guilty of backing up redundant copies of documents and digital pictures during the aughts, across maybe a total of 20 discs, is there a more efficient way to plow through all those files to better organize them? I plan to run a deduplicator across all the new backup folders on the hard drive, hoping all of the digital images have unique file names from the different cameras I had back then. There is a lot of clutter such as system files that I can remove across all the backups, but for all the multiple copies of files I am going to come across, is there software better suited to dedupe (and maybe reorganize) besides Auslogics Duplicate Finder? This is all being done on an older 2015 HP Envy desktop tower which luckily has the LG M-DISC you describe as well as an HP DVDRW. I would like to consolidate and clean up these files before sending them to the cloud. Thank you!

Discs are actually scratch-resistant and it is impossible to lose information due to scratches. On discs stored in any packaging, there is simply no place for scratches to appear. Even discs that have been lying unpacked for 20 years and are heavily scratched can be read without problems on good drives, sometimes with a loss of speed, but they can be read. if the scratches are already too critical, then they can be sanded.

@@EposVox This is personal experience, I have discs that have simply been lying around for decades without packaging, their surface is heavily scratched and they are still readable (here it also depends on the drive) regarding the scratch on the top, this only applies to CD discs, if they are DVDs then they are not afraid and scratches on top.

Could very well be, although keep in mind MakeMKV is very strict - one tiny error could discard the whole file (you may never even notice the error). This program is great but it doesn't compromise integrity at any cost because 1:1 backups are it's primary goal.

I ran into issues with Windows defender on Windows 10 deleting some of my software executables recently. at first I just shut down the security systems as well as I could because I didn't mind using different software in the first place but at some point I realized even though the files were gone it actually put them in some kind of a quarantine that I was able to recover them from... 😮

Teracopy has one other advatage. If Windows Explorer crashes which it always tends to do during long file transfers for me, then it runs as a process on it's own and you don't lose the progress or end up with a corrupt file.

I know this video is a year old, but I’m just coming around to getting all of my CDR’s and DVDs and wanting to put them in digital media. One thing I do not understand is the difference in a image and just copying the people talk about them like they’re one in the same same but yet they’re two different things, and I don’t understand it.

CD-Rs are notorious for rotting but I'm yet to see DVD-R rot for my 15 years of using them. BluRays should be even better 'cuz they use inorganic dye (except LTH but that was a mistake from the beginning). My most precious stuff is currently on at least 2 HDDs and M-Disc BluRays.

had a handful of USBs that would cycle offsite to a banks safe deposit box, but those could be unsecure too, or inaccessible for a time during a pandemic. You can encrypt the data for security but cloud services don't want to host encrypted data.

I have an LG USB based disk drive, of course it looks like that dell one shown on the video, but even being bought from Walmart it was a very good quality albeit not a BR drive... **EDIT** I originally bought it for my laptop I bought when my older laptop (with built in drive) crapped out, but I hardly used it there, and when I did it was when I made my new desktop PC, as it didn't have a CD drive bay, although I DO have a DVD/BR drive hooked up loosely currently... It just sits on top of the case, until I can find a good USB 2/3/C 5¼ bay for extra cheap, as I DO want to use my BR drive, but not have a panel off

Homemade CDs? No, they very much will not. Plenty are rotting right now. Plenty of people who dig into their old backups find a bunch of discs that have rotted. Even comments on this video of people who have tried doing this in the past.

SSDs and Flash drives may be much worse than CD-ROMs. How long SSDs maintain 'data retention' is ultimately unknown, but the JEDEC specification only mandates your typical consumer drive be able to hold charge long enough to read it back for a single year. And a lot of SSD manufacturers and press-release pasters on 'tech' sites like to tout the drive endurance, but they don't warrant data retention. Even Verbatim's new 128GB "Long-Life SSD" is only warranting the drive for 10 years, not the data on it.

Interesting comments, but I think you should have added two things: (1) Type of media is important. Most writeable media is based on dyes, which is why these discs fail over time. Use M-disc media, which has been tested by the US Air Force and NASA to last 100+ years. Why does it last so long? Because you are burning holes in the media to make the 1s and 0s, not changing dye, which can change back. Note that while M-disc media can be read by any drive, you need to use a drive labeled to burn (write) M-discs. (2) What to do about commercial DVDs that are known to rot? I'm looking at you Disney, for your "True Life" DVD series. They are are encoded (encrypted), so how do you copy them without a decompress/recompress that loses quality (and how does a copy program do this, since the decompression algorithm is supposedly licensed)?

thanks.... for ripping regular audio cds just looked up EAC on alternatives and found another program with similar name called fr:eac for other platforms. because the original Exact Audio Copy EAC seems to be only available for windows. maybe it seems both a pretty good programs? (without having tried it myelf yet). previously (last time) used the program 'max' on mac osx. but these days fr:eac seems to be much more popular in its downloads

do you think, in 2021, something like google one is enough for backup? I think although it's really convenient, I don't trust google for the privacy/security and preservation of the data. I don't care enough to take action though. (unnecessary ramble down there i wrote until i realized it's unnecessary) I was managing all my family's backups until I moved out for uni, and one month before that my backup hdd failed and it was just frustrating to recover everything (only some very recent data that wasn't backed up yet got lost fortunately), so I gave up and started paying for the 2tb plan, and since everyone was using android already I set up all photos to automatically upload at full quality and also uploaded older family photos to all google photos accounts as well as specific device backed up photos back to the respective accounts and whatever, for them to be able to browse freely and whatnot.(also other stuff to the drive) it's easy and simple but I don't really trust google, but also I'm away and can't really bother with backing up each phone manually and bulk uploading them every now and then.

Can I be cheeky and answer on behalf of OP (as another backup fan). The golden backup rule is 3-2-1: 3 copies, on 2 different media, 1 of which is offsite. I would highly advise against relying solely upon any third party / cloud provider for two reasons. One: you have no direct control over it. And secondly: it only gives you one copy of your data. Synology NASes (which I love and recommend) have nice utilities for automatically running daily backups of various clouds, including Google. If you don't want to go down that route, you can periodically run takeouts and duplicate to your onsite location that way. Either way, live by the adage "the cloud isn't backup"

Seems like more of a financial/regulatory question than just a technical one. As long as you trust Google and nobody else gets your credentials and removes your files, it should be good. They have fast servers for DL.

3:54 man no joke the idea of even digital discs having degradation without evne being tooo scratched up... from only a 15 or 20 year span from when I was a young kid is kind of annoying.. well more than just a pet peeve... man it is what it is though I mean it is not like enough to be on the brink rage but like... it is kind of annoying I mean... when something that is toted as being long lasting vs vhs and sudio tapes/audio cassettes etc Pfft just this last week or two discovered sort of by experimentation on basically a pre inherietance but just kept for sake of mere data security but decided to use it for it has a cd drive that also does dvd burns it turned out after all... so yeah but figured out you can dub FROM a cd not just onto a cd... pfft well that is kind of nice but after 4 or 5 cds of church music from childhood found a cricular same few lines of circular shapes of scratch lines from the player it seems whatever last or over time player used for playing it was damaging it evidently but who kniws when since it was done through that of years before even picking them up off the little mini book of cds that ive gotten over the years full of like all 24 cds etc fwiw but Mostly if not all are cd r discs ... but yeah so the stupid laptop/pc is not willing to or else it seems to have been more than a few minutes and for what it is it seems kind of a minor nuiecance for it to not make the same consistent high speed sound of spinning. l but rather a movement of the laser presumably but feels tough to know if its just worth ignoring and lettong it do for what it is...whatever or basically chuck the one cd as it is an actuslbought cd snyways but I am not too concerned with it just figured id consolidate all the music to freshly onpened howev4r old of existing stock blank cd r discs... but yeah as zi just go through I have run into that but it just did the first 3 or 3 and a half tracks of the 13 fwiw

Dam I got 6 2tb back up hard drive with all of my data like photos videos music games that I stored over the years I've also got a 4tb hard drive filled with over 300 PS3 games so if something happens too my ps3 like some one deleted my games or my data got corrupt on my ps3 I can restore them with my back up HDD I also have USB sticks filled with retro games like Sega Genesis Nintendo super Nintendo game boy advance PS1 PS2 all files organized I also have a 2 TB filled with Blu ray movies and some times I think I'm paranoid cause I have back ups of backups I don't know all I know if there was a fire in my house only thing I'll take are my backup hard drives unless my family was staying over fk the hard drives family comes first. NOTE don't buy external hard drives from China wish there hardrives are budget az I try too transfer Data too the hard drive from wish It will transfer over but for some reason it gets delete like vanish ???or sometimes you can't even transfer too that external HDD go too your Trusty local store instead sorry for the long story

@@edd9581 why not? I found old rusty usb-stick on the beach few years ago. It worked just fine after pealing some melted plastic and cleaning it with isopropylalkohol. Files on it was almost decade old and very old model of sandisk. My cds and dvds are getting scratched just by looking on them and yes i know there is better quality ones and ways to repair them. Anyway i think that there is nothing wrong with flash memory. Never had problem in almost 20 years of using it. Zero lost data except those times that i accidently formated wrong drives.

@@adokapo A flash drive is an unreliable medium and sooner or later will definitely lead to data loss. Even the cheapest DVDs are many times more reliable than flash drives and all other storage methods. By the way, discs are actually not afraid of scratches and it is impossible to lose information due to scratches.

Disc rot is so overblown lol iv got optical discs ranging from laserdisc to bd-r and have never encountered rot in any of my media

There is a big difference between a pressed disc/burned disc with inorganic dyes, and a burned disc with organic dyes. I have more CD-Rs with errors than without.

You don't really acknowledge the different sets of backup data. Some data should be burned to archival quality Blurays, stuff you can't ever lose, scans of your baby book, idk. Hard disks are vulnerable to bit rot and you seem like a guy who hasn't experienced that yet.

Literally this is why i emulate. Becauseim a perservist. I don't care if its i gess people would argue. Not authentic. Or right. It kinda is right if there not saved. If you want to play a NEW Copy of Halo 2 on a OG Xbox. Not gonna happen. If you are a hardcore player wanting to play it the most original way. Your gonna have to have the used copy of the game and a used console on a used CRT TV. Even then all of it dies. Personally i have a CRT. I know eventually it will die. But i plan to mod my OG xbox to play games off a 2tb hard drive. On a CRT. But atleast the Console will be modded for future stuff. But even then. The console will die at one point. Atleast i got a computer. And even then.y computer may die one day. Fine i can transfer all my game files to a new computer. I may die one day. Fine. Atleast i can give my stuff to someone else who can pass it on to others. Eitherway. Computer is the best way as of now and into the future.

this is advertisement, he telling us to buy new blu ray drive(even several), and for what? for dvd/cd disks which most people own, and everyone have dvd drive in their or their relatives closet.

This is not an advertisement. If you have a DVD drive, use it. Most people do not have optical drives anymore.

i tested how durable a blank dvd is by scratching the shit out of a disc i messed up on They are pretty durable. It makes me doubt people's claims about disc rot. it's a marketing gimmick for m-discs. Of course they'll tell you all about disc rot because they want to sell m-discs. Many of these m-disc people over-exaggerate disc rot so they can sell you m-discs. They'll claim disc rot will occur in 4 years. i have had cheap discs since the early 2000s and they still work. i just use cheap discs. i don't give a fuck

I agree, there are no rotting disks; even my cheapest CDs and DVDs, recorded 20-25 years ago, are still readable. But MDISC is inherently more reliable; it has stronger inorganic components and there is no doubt that it is many times more durable than simple discs.
