I love watching these old sessions. Henning is always standing with his hands either behind his back, or tucked into his armpits. He's so young & somehow seems shy and timid, while blasting the vocals like a middle-aged, well experienced rock star. It's both funny and adorable. He's my favorite person atm 🧡

These old videos from eleven years ago with our three boys (or occasionally four with their first bass player - on a standing string bass! - Lars Lötgering) are precious indeed. Especially those where they actually play on the streets with English language improvisations by Henning. Like the one with the thieving toddler, to which Henning spontaneously improvises a text. Or the one with the three boys in the car (and, of course, Martin Lamberty on the camera as the fourth man). I guess the earliest video of Henning performing (without Chrissi and Sevi) was made by a guy called Benjamin Windhof. It shows Henning - obviously still a teenager with some “baby fat” in his face - with his guitar in the streets of Cologne's “Belgisches Viertel” (“Belgium Quarter”) - hence the name of the video “Belgium Beats”.

If you would like, here is some information about the rhythm instrument that Holger Mertin plays, or the sound sculpture, as the developer called it. It is now commonly known as a "handpan" and was developed around 25 years ago in Switzerland and was called "Hang" by the inventor. It consists of two hemispherical segments made of sheet steel glued together. There are sound fields on the upper half shell. It is comparable to a reverse steel drum that is played with the fingers and hand. It therefore has many times the rhythmic, tonal and melodic possibilities of a steel drum. Since it is still relatively unknown and has only been produced in large quantities for a few years, it is not yet used very often.

Mertin is a German musician- video is part of AMK 2013 album release- “the song speaks to the idea of taking a chance in life and putting yourself out there. Waiting at someone's door and hoping they'll open up is symbolic of the various risks people take in life, whether it be in relationships, career choices, or personal growth. A call to action to seize the moment and try to make something happen in one's life.”

AnnenMayKantereit suggestion: "Don't Wanna Talk About My Feelings' recorded in the desert outiside Los Angeles 2017. Another great song: 'Jenny Jenny'. In the music video the guys are riding donkeys while singing the song. Funny because a female donkey is called a Jenny. Both songs are really great.

This song is from the time, where the whole band were still streetmusicians in the streets of cologne. Thats one reason, why henning has such a stong voice. Always having to sing louder than the street noises.
