Some people call it "having no direction," "aimlessness," or "wasting one's potential," but for me, I call it being content. People cannot accept the fact that I like what I do, feel content with my current income level, and have no answer when it comes to the question, "what are your career ambitions?" I'm immensely privileged to be able to keep myself alive, housed + then some, and I have no desire to climb the ladder any higher. To quote the legendary Sinéad O'Connor, "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got."

I think ambition and dreams are overrated. Sure, people have particular things they want out of life (jobs/relationships/things) but what happens frequently is that these things get bastardized up to the point that if you aren't constantly trying to 'get' somewhere or something or somebody then people consider you aren't living right. Most folks just want to be able to live, have a home and stability, and get some happiness. Success isn't always a six figure job, massive house, 2.5 kids with a fence, married by 30, great job by 25, 4.0, going to Ivy league schools or all that. people go at their own pace. and different happy things for different people.

Very well said!!! I feel the same way. I have been comparing myself to others for years since college, bullying myself for not having “drive” or “ambition” to force my way through grad school and a job I’m not 100% sure I’d even want. I feel much more calm and like myself when I focus on the smaller things like stability, a nice place to live, close friends and family, and time to be able to do the things I love most.

Might be a tangent, but this is why the employer/employee exchange of value is never equal. The power dynamics in setting the goals and metrics to serve the employer (KZbin, in your example) make it so that even if the employee (creator) gains monetary value for meeting those goals, the hidden psychological and moral costs of following someone else's agenda (additionally: within the conditions they get to set) still exist -- and money can't make up for what is lost.

@26Sundrops
@26Sundrops 3 жыл бұрын
@@anja3634 Who the employer is isn't relevant given the hypercapitalist system we live in. Choice is somewhat an illusion. Sure, on a small scale we could maybe choose to work at Target versus Sam's Club, or Google versus Amazon, but at the end of the day we are subject to the limitations that the employer class sets. Most people don't get to choose to work outright; their choices are restricted based on childhood resources, geographic proximity, college degrees, family circumstances, physical/mental abilities and other protected classes that could affect job prospects.

I think the key is balance. You can have goals and work towards them (sold or self defined, but preferably the latter) but you shouldn't hold your entire self worth in the completion of those goals.
@jamieslacks
@jamieslacks 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Balance how you define your goals for yourself with their materialization into reality. Desire is the root of suffering, so do not desire your goals coming to fruition so much as try to actively perform your goals as best/often as comfortable. Find satisfaction in your own growth, take good criticism and apply it without attaching it to your ego, and ultimately ensure you are doing what you set out to do and not a bastardized version of your original intention; usually for the sake of seeking some reward/resolution that does not truly reward/resolve (i.e. human hunger/lust/desire says we always want more, easy trap to fall into on many levels)

Thank you for posting unique, thought-provoking content. One thing I would add is that it is intrinsically impossible to separate one's own "true self" from exposure to the outside world. What I think a lot of people often forget is that we are only the product of our interactions with our environments, and there is no escaping it! of course one can become increasingly aware of the outside's impact on our worldview/self/desires, but it is impossible to fully discern where the line is, because there is no line. I think this became 100% clear to me in a neurobiology course, as it really showed me that our own brain structure, development and remodeling equates to (re)wiring based on external input. There is no internal wiring (aka our minds) without the external input! Anyway, thanks for the video 💛

just wanted to say i’m so grateful i found your channel at the time that i did. i feel like i’ve also gone through a similar political awakening around the same time as you. but lately ive been spiraling and getting anxious over a new sales job (never thought i’d be in the sales industry) where our meetings mostly consist of celebrating those with the highest number of sales, but i want to shift my focus more on the value our product can bring to ppl (which still feels capitalistic..ik.. but i do believe there is true value to it) as well as just being able to have good conversations with people rather than trying to get as many sales as possible. when asked by my recruiter about “my goals and dreams in 10 years”, i guess feeling connected with my community wasn’t good enough but more so what my dream house was gonna look like or what my dream car was gonna be. still got the job in the end though hahah but that threw me in for a loop. still struggling about what i want for myself and what i want this job to be for me and how i can align it with my values without getting caught up in the numbers or other people’s dreams. anyways, excellent video as always Kat! really needed to hear some good discussion on this :,)

I enjoyed this video! I am someone who has never found much traditional success from an early age. I left high school early, was the worst player on my basketball team etc. because of this I have had to give myself the grace of self acceptance and value without regardless of many external measures. As I’ve gotten older I’ve had to give myself the gift of believing in my own ability to achieve and to push myself to grow. I think the healthiest place for me to land on this is somewhere between the second two options you mentioned.

I 100% get what you mean. In high school I took a bunch of classes at local colleges to "get a leg up". Now I'm in college, a year a head of my peers credit wise and I realized that I didn't care at all about the industry I was on track to be in. I changed by major and I don't know if it's the right major, but whatever I can change it again if I need to. You mentioned that your freshman self would not have seen this life for you at all, but I feel like you don't owe anything to your freshman self. When I was a freshman in high school I was a completely different person, I personally try to avoid holding my present day self to the things that I wanted when I was younger. That also applies to my older self, my 30 year old self has no obligation to life whatever life I have pictured for myself now.

This is difficult because the system occupies a lot of our time and is so tied to our notion of self that when you abandon it it feels like there are no alternatives, especially if you have limited access. You realize the trap we put ourselves in. It's important to be very gentle to oneself and be creative in the ways you abstract reality and build a new path. There's no easy way, but at least you don't miss the chance to truly live your truth in this brief existence

Great video, intriguing concepts! I had a few thoughts 1. For the clothes analogy to choices, I think we often see ourselves moving to and from the 3 main choices. 2. It’d be amazing to see this level of flexibility and acceptance in more society-based settings, like school and work. 3. I think it’s inevitable to think “what if” I did this, or what if I chose this choice instead the one I stuck with? With that in mind, the constant thing where our mind drifts off, the importance of looking at your life as it currently is and having the emotional intelligence to understand how you feel, what makes you feel those ways, and so on is crucial to critically evaluating ourselves/ our life. 4. I’m glad that you brought up this topic. I think it’s something most of us have noticed a couple of times before, but didn’t know what to do with it, like other societal reflection/philosophy induced observations. I’m hoping the concept of your dreams being sold to you and devalue, if that’s what it was called, will be another topic that gets normalized. As for my life right now, I feel like I’m in between the “my own values” and “I need to do more and have more to prove” mindset. It’s like I’m wearing a layered outfit rather than T-shirt and jeans. And for the goals that are sold to us, I think that they’re creeping into our lives every second. Social media. News. Sometimes it even feels like the only way to survive in a society, let alone one that’s 70% urban dwelling, is TO follow the rules and play the game that politics and laws want us to, as well as parents and family that are older and more often more prone to positively perceiving authority and big business. Heck, with the way Capitalism disproportionately supports those who abide by it, it even seems that it was designed. Labor exploitation. Hubris. Indifference. Climate change. Corruption. The distinct social classes. Inflation. As for economics, I can’t really stand that topic anymore. That’s probably because I’m almost done with a macroeconomics class I can’t drop, thank school for me. I don’t think it’s for me, at least the interest rates, economic growth, shifters, it feels dry and inhumane.

I somehow ended up on a Reddit thread about lucrative jobs a lot of people don't know about and I saw one comment that really hit home for me. It was a girl who said she made good money "flipping burgers" (she didn't specify exactly what she did or where but basically just that she made enough money to support her and her lifestyle at an "entry-level" type job). And she was content and happy with it. She said she could do it her whole life. People in the comments thought she was crazy but her comment really hit home for me. I'm graduating soon and I've been stressing about finding a good-paying job so much that I forgot the point of why I'm doing this (it is my passion and I do hope to have a good career in what I'm passionate about). Glad I ran across that comment and this video to remind me of why I just spent 5 years in college lmfao. It was never to make 6 figures or reach what society deems as succesful. It was simply to be able to do what I love and make enough money to be comfortable and support myself. Thanks to her and thanks to you for making this video.

Thank you, thank you for airing and explaining your thoughts. Thoughts that are shared by so many and are explained in such a clear way in your videos. C19 has affected every one of us, rethinking our choices and the realities we are and have been living in. I think many people are waking up and starting to question their realities. The most wonderful being that more generations than X, Y, Z etc. are opening up their eyes, having new views on capitalism, embarking on new courses in their lives that correlate with their actual interests and hobbies. More people are checking out environmental changes, going back to a slow and natural living, putting down their phones and the list goes on. I'm very excited to see where this will lead us - what new inventions will be made, helping the society and world. Please continue ❤

Not that C19 was good medically and health-wise, and sure it did cause more social divisions... that being said there are some huge sociocultural benefits I think were initiated by C19. Everyone being forced to stay home kind of forced us to become more introspective and gave us time to recuperate, heal, and grow as a whole generation.

Often time, life does not go as we plan them to be. We have these ideal images in our head that we would like to accomplish certain things by certain time, but it often turn out the opposite of that. We end up going over or under because life is unexpected, and things change overtime. Our perspectives change, our goals change, etc. Everyone wants a good looking partner, smart, sense of humor, wealthy, etc., but we end up in a strange place with someone when we're least expected to happen. Instead of actively trying to seek for what we want, just live your life in a way that makes you happy. The issue I often see from people is that they are following the norms and what society or others expect them to live their own life. Instead of caring about what other people want you live, live the life you personally feel it's right for yourself and what makes you happy. If this means cutting people off, then do so. If this means your parents don't support you, then find people that do support you. Ultimately, you're the one that's living the life for yourself, not your parents or friends or peers. They can give you suggestions or opinions, but they are not the one that's living your life. I'll use an example for video game. I have been playing FFXIV for 6 years now. None of my IRL friends play that game. But I continue to play this game and have met so many wonderful people along the way and made friends with them because they share the same passion and interest in this game as I do, and they understand where that is coming from, how video game can really help a person through tough times in life, etc. These are the same type of people that understand how wholesome and supportive the FFXIV community is, and they continue to support and encourage me and other people to pursue their own goals in life even outside of game. It's okay to not have your IRL friends do the same thing as you do. One of my close friends is a registered nurse for ICU, and she barely has time to do anything because of her job, let alone play games. I would love for her to try out FFXIV and see her reaction for the story in FFXIV that everyone loves, but unfortunately that's just not her thing. But I still talk to her regardless how different our lives are. Just because people are different and don't share the same interest or hobby in life, it doesn't mean we can't be friends with them. What's important to me is her personality and that she's a genuinely considerate and caring person, which is why I reach out to her and go out of my way to support her in her life too. Ultimately, that's what friends and family are there for, to support each other. This includes our dreams and goals in life too.

I think maybe the crux of it is how you define your self worth and whether you're willing to take the time and mental effort involved in formulating your own values. Regarding social media, unfortunately with machine learning / ai the algorithm used to promote content is no longer a set equation but based off of learned patterns that maximize engagement which is kind of scary to think about as human nature reacts strongly to things that are not necessarily the best for personal growth or mental health (quick gratification, negativity, criticism, conflict, comparison). There is a lot of cutting edge work being done in this field as we speak and personally I feel like social media has improved in this regard already and think it will continue to, but from a purely capitalist perspective there is no incentive to change an algorithm producing maximum engagement for something more humanitarian. I personally think capitalism has done many things well, but I think it's biggest downfall is that it relies on near instant gratification, and that this in itself results in many things being reduced the the most cookie-cutter, expedient version, often to detriment

Great reading I would recommend about this topic is 'Willing Slaves of Capitalism' by Frederic Lordon. It's not the easiest read but it goes really deep into how capitalism mentally programs us to willingly submit to a shitty life for money and survival.

Hi! Super amazing insightful video. One complication I would add is that in a capitalist society, it’s impossible to completely ignore value capture and create your own metrics. When corporations create values, those values also hold power over an individual’s survival. It largely depends on that individual’s privilege to what extent they are ABLE to reject value capture. Seriously though this video really made me think and my thoughts are just an addition! Gonna go watch that lecture now :)

there is something to be said for not worrying about having being able to have a place to live and buying the food you want at a grocery store. And see a doctor if you need one. Security is not a luxury or a dream.

Nature embeds in us insistent dreams of success. For the species, there must be an evolutionary advantage in being hard-wired for such striving; restlessness has given us cities, libraries, spaceships. But this impulse doesn't leave much opportunity for individual equilibrium. The price for a few works of genius throughout history is a substantial portion of the human race being daily sickened by axienty and disappointment. - Alain de Botton, The course of Love

The real question is ...are you happy with you being highly ambitious? If so, then it's all that matters. I think (correct me, dear author of this video, if I'm wrong) this video is for people who struggle with being "productive", ambitious, compare themselves with people who are, because we believe that there is something wrong with us. I constantly feel this way. I feel like I need to have this or that, or be this or that...but the truth is these dreams aren't mine. They are projected on me by society, capitalism, ads and etc. The only things I really want is to be healthy, have a roof over my head, food and have good friends and happy family. It truly is matrix I found myself in and I want to escape it. The real happiness to me is not Rolex watch, or yacht, or mansion. You cannot take it with you to your grave, either. This constant rat race is a waste of time. To me, at least.

As an enneagram 3 it’s crazy how my creator values are deemed by metrics of “success”- viewers and subscribers. Anyone have any ideas on HOW to step away from using rankings and metrics to deem your own self worth?

I have a very important question (several, tbh): let me preface this. Big fan btw. I'm Claire, I'm 29. I found your channel while researching SDR roles and what that entails about 2 weeks ago, [I just started at SV Academy) and I have been soaking up all your good vibes ever since. It's taken me a while to get to a good place in life and with myself and find my way (still am). I am intrigued by the concepts talked about in this video. I admire your transition on finding yourself and my question is this - What advice would you give on separating your ego from all these metrics, at least, an attempt? How can you AVOID pinning your self-worth on these metrics, especially when those metrics come from work? How can you stay authentic without being bogged down by such constraining, ever-present metrics? No offense whatsoever, bc Ily lol but I'm finding myself teetering between the pressure of becoming "the old you" if you will, (girlboss, hustle culture, etc.) bc that's what society wants and asks of us, and still being authentic to myself AND commanding professional respect. It's a really difficult balancing act. Being new to this all especially, I'm suffering from imposter syndrome as it is - (your videos though are making huge breakthroughs for me and my confidence). You seem to juggle it all so well. Do you compartmentalize one way of being at work vs. home or are you able to not have to drastically switch that much? (I feel like completely different people at home vs. work and it's annoying). Spill the tea sis. I am loving your videos and you've truly inspired me. I want to break through in SaaS as an SDR and move back to SF (I graduated from USF). I also love your lifestyle/blogging vids. Your videos always put me in such a happy and inspired mood. I just wish I can be more like you, tell me your secrets! lolll thanks!
