First, I listen to two people on food prepping - you and Rose Red. I am an older woman who never had an interest in canning or storing food. I was a college educator who learned a lot about my field, but not much about practical knowledge such as food canning and prepping for what could happen in a world that has become topsy turvy with idiots at the helm. But I digress. Your videos are full of good information, but what I have benefited from is your attention to detail. For people like me, how to do the seemingly simple tasks of canning is important, because we know that the devil is in the details. Just how to put the canning lid on the jar sounds simple, but the importance of taking your time and getting it right is critical in canning. Lots of videos don't show this kind of detail. For instance, lifting up the FoodSaver to release any pressure in the line before taking off the lid on the canning jar is something I've never seen in any video and you do this without assuming it is something everyone should know. You inadvertently answered a question I've had about my experience in getting the lid off the jar without breaking the seal. You are also mindful of people's varying economic levels and you try to work around that too. You're a smart man, the demonstration with the marshmallow was great. Again, detailed explanations. You seem like a great guy. You would have made a great professor! Thank you for all you are doing to teach people and help people stay fed in our very unpredictable world,. (Sorry if I sound as if I'm grading you! ) 🤣 Many Blessings to you and yours.

If you are using your sealing attachment and sealing fine things like Cinnamon, Rye flour, powdered sugar, etc. Cut a circle of paper towel down over the top of the fine product. It will save your food saver from getting fine particles in the motor. I ruined one due to this. I just trace around the ring and cut it out. You can get 5 or 6 out of one sheet of paper towel.

I add a desiccant to my jars and anything I dry can. Just as a safe method. I have never oven canned without the food in the jar. I have done that way with lots of my dry goods. Sometimes the pastas have so many air spaces it will only seal in the oven. But I put the pasta in the jars then into the oven and heat it all and after taking it out I quickly put lids on the jar. I think it may destroy some of the nutrients but it will lose nutrients setting on the shelf also. I prefer using the vacuum with the o2 absorber. I search the net for coupons for the vacuum sealers. I sealed a lot of food that I dehydrated in half gallon and quart jars with just 300cc oxygen absorbers a few years ago. I didn't have a vacuum sealer at that time. I go to 20 lb/ let pressure off/I leave food saver cap on/ then I repump with hand brake bleeder/ normally I hear a ping right away/ that means that lid is sealed.

@@timmy0 doesn't matter which one. As brake bleeder gets older/ with use it may need to be pumped up higher to hold the seal. That's why 20# recommendation.

What kind of adapter do you need?
@kevinrehberg87584 жыл бұрын
The foodsavers vacuum adapters wont work on some of the smaller canning jars as they have to secure to the lower ring on the jar and the smaller jars "lower rings" sometimes aren't big enough..You CAN get around this however and buy some rubber O rings that will stretch and slip over that lower ring from the bottom. Once over, it becomes your sealing ring that the adapter secures to to make the seal.The reverse can be applied to quart sized glass mayo jars, which don't have that ring in the regular mouth.. Just set the o ring onto the jar and carefully place the adapter over it.. then you are good to go.. Also if you can't afford a foodsaver "vacuum sealer" at the very least you can use a brake bleeding tool with the adapers

Heat expands. Cold contracts. Although I do get confused by it sometimes because, if you freeze a container with fluid in it, it can burst the container, because the cold expands the molecules, yes? And you can reuse the larger Classico jars - for DRY canning ONLY as, the wide mouth lids fit them. Look up the information online.

I can't get my tubing to fit into the food saver hole for vacuuming. Ant suggestions?

My first time to try this. I have a foodsaver. Do I steralize the jars in the oven and the lids too when using the vacuum sealer method, or steralize some other way, or not steralize at all?

So exactly how did you sterilize your jars after you wash them did you put them in the oven

I've seen a vacucanner used. You need a pressure cooker and an vac pump and some fittings. The canner won't be able to used as a regular canner once this is done.

Is it correct that the FDA does not recommend dry canning as it can create the perfect environment for botulin toxin? The dry goods can contain the botulism bacteria and it thrives in low oxygen environments with as little as 10% moisture in the food, not just the jar. Dry canning temperatures do not kill botulism. Can you tell us where you found your information?

Has anyone tried storing a sugar substitue, like Splenda, in long term food storage? I'm thinking about my diabtetic in-laws and borderline husband. Mason jars? Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers? What would that look like?
@margaretharris654 жыл бұрын
Those jar sealers are NOT EASY to find. My regular mouth sealer would not seal a pint jar. Thought it was the gasket. I called the company and they do NOT sell the blue gaskets. Have to buy the entire jar sealer. Called around and nobody has the sealers here in Las Vegas. What to do...? I bought a brake bleeder.

Hello, thank you for teaching/sharing these methods. OMG,, I just finished canning 20lbs of white rice for the first time. I used the oven method. In the final stage, I place a 300CC( the only ones I had ordered) in each hot quart before putting the lid on and tightening the ring. Did I mess up😳?Also, some preppers say it's ok to remove the ring part from the har once it has seal and store the jar just with the lid?

Thanks AP! I personally don't like the oven method but use food saver attachments and oxygen absorbers or Diatemaceous Earth. I fill my jars higher than the fill line for dry items as no space is needed like when you pressure or water can. I don't use oxygen absorbers when I vacuum seal jars. However one does it; if it works, great! I am canning ground beef and butternut squash today and tomorrow. Blessings to all!👵😊❤🌱🍃

Please explain what Diatamaceous Earth is and how to use it in canning!? I have just come across it for the first time in my life, & I am 65 y.o., for bug infestation scenarios this past year & ... Does not work well! Takes a long time! Is quite expensive! Have only found it in Pet Supply Shops! Why would I want earth in my food jars? The Environmental Health Hazard Experts have warned me that the particles are so fine, you can breathe it into your lungs -- hazardous to humans & pets!!? PLEASE HELP @AlaskaPrepper!

I was inspired by this one, AP, and I have so many different herbs and spices that I can't keep track of all of them, but I don' have very much of any one of them. I was thinking through my usual cooking and recipes that I use most often and realized that about a half dozen spices get used more than any of the others. It seems a good idea to prep in a good supply of my most used spices. My thought was to go to our local WinCo, which is like an Aldi's with a bulk section. Now, the bulk section has been modified in that the shopper does not get to pick the amount of the item because the employees have already bagged the bulk items into reasonable packages. This was the absolute best way - before the pandemic - to get spices because you could get just the amount you wanted at a fraction of the price for bottled spices. Well, I didn't have any luck at all. I could get ground black pepper, taco seasoning, garlic salt and a few other things from a dispenser, but the good stuff like whole cloves, anise stars, whole nutmeg and others were just not to be found, and I refuse to pay over a dollar a nut for nutmeg for the privilege of a label and a jar. So, I'm going to use what I have until it runs out and then either buy from Amazon or find folks who want to do a group purchase and break bulk among us. The other side of this, is that I was encouraged to see beans in the bulk area for pre-event prices. I don't know how long this will last, because the beans in the plastic bags were a bit higher. I didn't price out a lot of things, but the canning supplies were very low in supply but the price had not gone up much. The detergent and cleaning supplies were pretty well-stocked but there was no spray disinfectant at all. So, I guess that means that either the unprepared have stocked up on what they need and this is reflecting a more normal purchase and inventory or the supply chain is catching up with the demand. There was a funny sign on the door that said that they were not going to refund pre-event panic buying so the ones who bought a whole lot of stuff that they don't need are not going to get their money back. Keep up the great work, AP. Thanks for all you do.

I put an oxygen absorber in it and vacum seal it. When I opened a jar like this and put the lid on it seals it. So that's how good the vacuum sealer works.

@margiemelendy68573 жыл бұрын
@Courtney Heard. If you store it in the bags it can become bug infested or if a mouse gets in they'll have a field day. That's why everyone uses glass or metal.
