Thank you Seth, IMO "I don't know" is to me the exact RIGHT answer to all this. In my observation, shaming someone for their lack of certainty is the province of fools, cowards, and charlatans.

I loved the comment further down "There were three adults in this conversation." Totally nailed it. We need much more of this kind of respectful, enlightened and thoroughly honest dialogue.

I really wish i would've discovered these channels much sooner in my life. Or at least had better understanding of deconstructing. I grew up in a very religious home, went to christian schools, etc. If i disagreed with anything, i would be yelled at for hours about how if i dont get my life right, i might as well say hey to the devil now. If i asked questions, i got told I'm not allowed to ask those things. My family didnt believe I had depression or anxiety, or anything else wrong with me. In my early 20s, i began resenting my family for how they treated me. How im such an awful person cuz i wanted to live my own life, apart from them (looking back, it was creepy and borderline cult-ish). I felt so alone and detached for so many years, that i didnt know where to turn, who to talk to, etc. Ive only discovered channels like this in the last year or so, and things finally feel like they clicked for me....and for once i actually felt peaceful with being who i am. Im almost 36 and still am trying to get out of my mindset that id had for most of my life. But i feel better for it, feeling like i can be my own person without someone breathing down my neck what a pos i am cuz im not good enough for anything. I actually feel like i have some self esteem, too, which is completely foreign to me growing up. Sorry for the long rant. Just....wanted to share my story i guess 😅

Experiences are nothing more than experiences...experiences are not evidence of anything other than an experience.

Exactly. Thanks to heart surgery, I experienced life aboard a Nazi hospital starship, doesn't mean anyone should take that experience seriously. I don't take it as having really happened and no one else should, either.

I’ve had a number of experiences throughout my life. Some of them have convinced me of certain things, to the point that I’ve investigated different belief systems, some metaphysics, etc. I have conclusions that I’ve reached, but in no way think they can be used to convince others. I do talk about them with people if they’re interested. People with set beliefs systems are really not worth bothering with. The best thing I’ve learned is to be a bit open minded about, but use some critical thinking skills to determine where to go with what I hear, read or experience. One of my favorite quotes is from Hamlet: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

While I do enjoy the more abrasive discussions, this is one of the best videos posted lately. Just honest, adult conversation. I love it.

"I believe that You believe it." I accept that they can be, and probably are truthful in the sense that they believe it. But I also believe they are wrong, or at the very least I have ask iif it is impossible for them to misinterpret their experience. That is not impossible.

Yes, you can be honestly mistaken without being a liar. Honest in the sense that this is what you believe, but not in the actual content of the belief.

Not sure = not convinced = Atheist (it's not a bad word, it's honest). Think of an atheist is the ONLY type of person that is certain not to break the very FIRST Commandment - we will NEVER put another god before any other god (where most religions MUST be doing this).

The fact that there are even two religions with mutually exclusive claims that have convinced believers each with personal experiences that they each feel justify their belief (each with their own handy set of arguments) tells me at least 50% are in fact wrong. Multiply this by 1000s of religions - each with convinced believers means if I think my religion is correct, I am most likely among the 99.9% convinced they are right but are instead wrong. If we care about truth, let's have the religions of the world get together to test each of their claims, discard the untestable/unfalsifiable, and agree on a consensus set of verified facts. Then we can choose to join the one remaining unified world religion or not, but before that - it's not yet time to believe. Or, if religion is all about fulfilling emotional needs, and little about verified truth (which works only if you believe it), then never mind.

@@johnnolen8338Exactly! I don’t expect my experiences to convince others. There are some people I will discuss them with, but very few. I don’t follow any religion, but believe there is a God, or even perhaps gods. I don’t have any empirical evidence so why bother trying to prove the unprovable? All I have is evidence that has convinced me. Personally I think some people have spiritual experiences, but interpret them within the framework of their belief system. That’s one of the reasons I try not to be influenced by religious beliefs and dogma.
