At the end of the day, we play games to have fun and constantly thinking about whether something is "objectively good" only makes it a less enjoyable experience.

My favorite games are exactly as good as I think. I do not need a game like Outer Wilds or Undertale or Chrono Trigger or the Steins;Gate visual novel (yes I consider that a game as much as any other), that all literally changed my life and my values for EVER to be OBJECTIVELY good. If it’s my favorite I’ve definitely thought a lot about why I love it. Games are ART and art shouldn’t be looked at objectively unless you’re a critic and that’s precisely why people hate critics!

This is my exact thoughts too, My favorite games are in fact 100% as good as I think, taking no arguments on that, Dont need no critics or anything!

This is a great video. I'm definitely going to share this. It explains all of the problems I've been having with gaming communities as of late.

Well... Looks like that windwaker nostalgia has been incited. Now I know what I'll be doing for the next week.

When it was Spider-Man 2 and Mario Wonder releasing the same day, ppl obviously jumped to compare them… when they aren’t even in the same playing field. 2 completely different games, 2 very good games being compared against each other isn’t super fair. Plus the switch up the public had on Spider-Man 2 is insane. Great vid man! Loved it!

Grapple Hook Shotgun. That’s objectively good. That’s all. Also funny musical from Alan Wake II.

This is so true, I hate when I’m online and see someone say “ X game is objectively a masterpiece” like what, video games are a subjective media how can you see it’s “factually good”

Alright then, find me a person that didn’t like playing Chrono Trigger. I’d go so far ahead as to say that this game *objectively* has no flaws. The only „flaw“ I could think of is that sometimes it uses music improperly

I still need to get around to Chrono Trigger, it's been a game on my backlog for years now.

Big fan of Wind Waker and just finished playing it on my channel back in December, the issue with the tri-force pieces was the frustration of pulling them up. Sometimes I would pull it up first try but most times it would be a headache taking multiple attempts to bring one piece up. Otherwise the experience was great👍🏼

I agree a game can't be objectively good but it can be objectively well made. Just cause its well made doesn't mean everyone has to like it but it just means it's polished.

My favourite game is cup-and-ball, and nothing you can say will convince me that it's not perfect. Also, my sweet summer child, if you think _now_ is the most competitive period in gaming, ask your dad about the Sega/Nintendo console wars

At least it didn't have any cesspools online, it was cool seeing SEGA depict Mario in dumb ways.

In my position, I think videogames tend to be less about quality and more about experience. I can enjoy a game that someone else finds boring and at the same time dislike a game that someone else calls a masterpiece ! Just because a game has a flaw or a nitpick that doesn't make it automatically bad ! An example is that I love Sonic Frontiers and I still stand by it being my favorite 3D Sonic game and while yes it is very flawed, I still respect it for having ambition and trying something different for the series in which the last decade Sonic games were lacking ! Honestly Sonic Frontiers, Super Mario Odyssey and Tears of the Kingdom are all 10/10 based on my experience with all these games and I don't mind them having flaws or things players are not going to enjoy because I still love all these games not for the quality, but for the experience that all those amazing games provided me. Thank you Matt for this video and I definitely appreciate everything you said here ! Have a good day !

I believe at least the original Doom and Super Mario World are as close to “objectively good” games as I can imagine. And maybe Marvel vs Capcom 2.

Idk my favorite game is stardew because ive been playing it for years so ive gotten a lot of fun out of it, so in my own opinion its good. Every game is good in someone's opinion.

Yeah like you said I like games that are ambitious when it comes to trying different shit. I live suda51’s games. No more heroes killer7 because they are different. They try to tell a different story with graphics that are visually pleasing rather than high Fidelity. They have aspects like weird gameplay confusing stories and weird side jobs that don’t even work right on pc. But the games are fucking beautiful and had me slamming my desk at how brilliant they are

just a small aspect of what this video is trying to say, but i HATE when people care deeply about graphics and bugs in a game, and force their opinions on others (unless its so buggy it impacts your gameplay experience). for example, any of the new pokemon games. so many people are like "why would you spend £60 on the newest pokemon game the graphics suck and there are some bugs" and im like so what? you know what else it has, one of, if not THE best pokemon "evil team" in any pokemon game ive played, it has great new pokemon designs, the paradoxes, the legendary quartet, the way that the game splits itself into 3 main storylines that you can choose to experience at your own pace. but so many people dismiss all of that because its low poly and has some bugs that dont really even impact the game. if graphics are SO important, then why is minecraft, tetris, and wii sports 3 of the top 4 best selling games of all time. also with the bugs, i love trying to find movement bugs that change up how you move around a world, or most of all out of bounds glitches, that let me view the game from an entirely different angle, and lets me explore places i never could before. of course people can have their preferences, and if they want a graphically good game, with minimal bugs, thats fine. but i dont understand why some people think that their view is the objectively correct one, and attack people for liking games that they dont

Maybe if you did more than one Google search and spent more time researching and contemplating, you would understand that just because some people are biased doesn't make something they believe 100% subjective. Something can be factually, objectively true at the same time as people hold subjective biases toward them. If you define what "good" is, then you can measure which games are objectively good, or which aspects of a game are objectively good. BEAUTY, like a game or a piece of art, has both objective and subjective aspects. Beauty is real and objective, and each person has a subjective bias when it comes to certain types of beauty. Simply googling and reading "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and then taking that as your entire worldview is not a intelligent way to form opinions. "Objectively good" is not an oxymoron if you DEFINE what good means. "Is the game well-programmed?" is something you can factually verify. That's not the same question as "Do you LIKE the programming?" THAT is a subjective question. Quality can be checked, measured, and assessed objectively; preferences cannot. And you are conflating those two different things.
