No my friend, hip hop did not start with gangster rap, and the names were like nick names, monikkers. Kool G Rap, DJ Polo., Run DMC. They were called MC's back in the day. The Fresh Prince, KRS One. Check out Pat Smear.

Then you have the performers who have a stage name forced upon them. Case in point..John Mellencamp. He was told no one would buy music from someone named Mellencamp so John Couger was forced upon him. Then as he got more popular he became John Couger Mellencamp then finally just good ol' John Mellencamp.

I thought Slash got his name from something to do with masculine urination habits. In my country, Australia,blokes say ' going for 'a Slash' meaning,taking a pee. So I assumed that's how he got his name. Thus, I always thought Slash to be a pretty crude stage name to take, not that unique, since all guys take a Slash (females take a leak here, only guys go for a slash). I think one needs to do a bit of research before taking a stage name...

One cannot play pop music and have ethnicity at the same time. Either play traditional folk music with ethnicity or play pop music and drop ethnicity. Can't have it both ways. Legende is true Norse Swedish folk music and have the right to be called Swedish, not ABBA members because they do not play traditional Swedish folk music and therefore do not have the right to be called Swedish.
